C rowded O ut .—Several interesting articles, including the County Court pro ceedings and Roseburg correspondence, are unavoidably crowded out this week. l’oRRESi*i>Nl»ENUK. — Correspondence on local matters from all parts of Jackson mid Josephine counties is respectfully so licited. Mr. Adams was an old citizen of Galice Creek, where ke kept a store for many years, and was universally respected by all who knew him. I. egal S tarting P oints .—Surveyor Howard this week estalished two legal starting points,—one at the centre of Or egon and California streets, and the other at tbo centre of California and “E” streets,—for the purpose of ascertaining the correct lines of town lots, and at which the survey of all county roads running from Jacksonville will be com menced. M asonic E lection . — At a regular meeting of Warren Lodge, A. F. A. M., liehl Wednesday evening, December 11th, the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: T. G. Reams, W. M.; J. A. Cardwell, 8. W.; C. C. Beekman, J. W.; J. Bilger, Treasurer; Max Muller, Secretary; R. 8. Dunlap, Tyler. The installation will take place on Dec. 27 th. D eath of D r . L. G anvng . — Dr. L. Gunung, an old and respected citizen of Jacksonville, died of pleurisy at his res idence last Monday morning, after a sickness of several days. Deceased was a member of Oregonian Pocahontas Tribe No. 1, I. <). R. M., by which Order lie was buried next day with appropriate and imposing ceremonies. He was nearly 59 years of age, and leaves a widow to mourn his loss. H eavy F rost .—Some of the heaviest frosts known to the oldest inhabitant fell every night this week. The hills and roofs of houses next morning aji- peared as though a young snow storm had been raging the night before, and everything in the shape of a vegetable or plant left exposed, was done for. Water .in the house was frozen to quite a depth, and so heavy was the frost, that the sun’s rays, which shone brightly every .day, hail no effect in thawing out the ground. This is exceedingly rough on the stockraisers. T he S prague R iver S ettlers .— From Col. Alvin Cobb, who was in town this week from Sprague River, situated in the locality of the late Indian out break, we learn that the settlers im mediately assembled at one of the strong est natural positions in the neighborhood, and have collected al) the families in that aectioo. They have themselves securely fortified and venture out only in bodies. Had not these timely precautions been taken, the settlers might have met the sjm ! fate of those on Lost River, as they are situated between the Snake and Mo doc tribe*, whom the Col. says are allies. The settlers are well armed and provided to defend themselves against any ordina ry attack from tho Indians, and with a man of the cool Judgment and determin ed will of Col. Cobb to direct them, will doubtless sustain themselves from the dangers that threaten them. Till: MASSACRE AND ROBBERY OF THE HODDY FAMILY. THE FURNITURE WARE-ROOM, INDIAN CAMPAIGN'. J. B.
