7 r 1 THE INDEPENDENT. HILLSBORO ; ; : : THURSDAY. A Scalawag. Last Thursday evening a man ap peared at a gentleman's residence in this place and asked for his supper and the man of the housa directed the person to the hotel, but he went to Mr. Finney's residence and told the little boy that he wanted some supper, that he had asked the richest man in the place to give him his sup per and was refused. The boy some what frightened at the rough appear ance of the man let him into the house when one of Mr. Finnay'a daughters (Mr. Finney went East on a visit some time ago) set him a lunch on a table in the porch. The fellow ate ravenously and then with out ceremony departed. He was a tough looking customer and fright ened the children not a little Improvements. Mr. Gibson is building a dwelling on his property in the west part of town. Mr. H. Fickens has got his new barn under cover. Also Mr. Woods has completed his new barn. Mr. W. Jackson's new barn is under good headway and will be a handsome building when completed. Frank Cot a has made some new picketing in front of his property. Messrs. Milne have got their mill enclosed. The dry kiln is a substan tial brick structure one story high, erected by Mr. S. H. Elliot of Glen con. Mr. R. C:ive is finishing up hi new house. It will make a handsome little dwelling when completed. Mr. Chenette is putting up an addition on the south end of hi store building. Aims Of the Japanese Graduates. The three Japanese young men who graduated at Pacific University this year started for San Francisco immediately after Commencement. - vMr.-Tamra who took the Classical Course, will pursue tho study of chemistry as a specialty at Sau Francisco. Mr. Nosea who gradua V4$ed in the Scientific Course will also -' pursue the study of some of the nat ural sciences at the same place. Mr. Saito has gone to Washington City where he expects to geta position in the" Japanese embassy there. These young men will make a shining mark in their country's history, we predict. Anti-Monopoly. The farmers find business men of Yamhill ounty have held a public meeting and or ganized a People' Protection Trausporta - tion Company on the Yamhill river. Amt. of stock tike a 12.300, th shares being , $2- each. The following is the- board of director: Henry Warren, W. T. Xewby, W. Savage, J. K. Sampsoicftiul W. Chrisman. This new company w.n organized i i con sequence of the raise in the price of freight charges on the West-side railroad, the price per ton from McMinnville to Portland being now $6.00 per ton. Now the people in Washington county ought to organize a company to transport produce by way of the Tualatin river. Removal. We forgot to notice that Mr. W. D. Pit tenger, th popular grocery man in Ilills boro, has removed his stock of goods into Mr. Chenette's store building on the cor ner west of Wehring's furniture shop. The PoBtoffice is also moved to the same placo " f here it now occupies a neat room with new boxes. Pittenger has added dry-goods to his stock and can now furnish his cus tomers with whatever they want in that line. His store is ths most tasteful in the place and his custom is growing rapidly. Democratic Club Meeting. Our Gaston correspondent sends us the following: Last Saturday a little four year old son of Baml. Gilpin, living 2 miles south-west of Gaston, while out play ing near the village, fell into a pond of water, and an older brother who was playing with him ran to the house and told his mother. Mrs. Gilpin ran to the pond and beheld tho little boy lying in the water with his face downward apparently life less. Not being able to reach him from the bank he sprang into the pond, which at the place was some six feet deep, brought the child to the shore, being nearly strangled to death before getting out. The pond was stignent water full of siimo an! bugs. The accident happened about dark and Mrs. G. was alone with her children, and it was 9 o'clock next day before assistance reached the little sufferer. Every effort was made to resuscitate the child with out avail. He died Sunday morning about 9 o'clock. Cornelius. July 17, 187G. Editor In dpendent: Judging from the amount of new machinery that comes to this station the farmers must be preparing for an extensive harvest. Cornelius has rented his farm near the Columbia Academy to some Marion County farmers for 5 years at $2000 per year cash. Someemmigrants have recently ar rived in our town. One family has 18 children all alive, 14 of whom are at home. Haying hai commenced in good earnest and an abundant yield is promised with G per ton the price. A Wappato man complains of "Toots" representing that they are having the Typhus there when he says no such case has happened and that good health reigns. Guimes Jn. Police Court D. Williams J. Forest Grove. Sianforde I. L. Aldred, Esri., vs. Burr Jackson, George Naylor, Eddie McDonald and Frank Dow, a suit to recover dumages from the defend dants for changing the said Stanforde I. Li. Aldred Esquire's hack wheels on the evening of the 4th, the said Stanforde I. L. Aldred, Esquire, having driven to Cornelius and half wav to the Giove without discovering that anything was "crooked" in "der mashesn." Tho defts were commended to the mercy of the court and were adjudged, "not guil ty," throwing the said Stanforde I. L. Aldred Esq. into the costs amounting to $17,48 cents. 11. O. Scott, Clerk. The Doctor is a splendid speaker . The attendance was large. A Liberal Club was organized with oi members, of which the officers are as follows: T. N. Hints, President; P. G. Shipley has gone to the mountains for his health, which has Ieen bad for two months past. Mr. Hoxter has received a large btock of tunibl-'rs and other glassware. More immigrants. Mr. Woodward, who owns tho McMillen saw-mill, will ship a large amount of cedar lumber to Portland this year. He can sell all he can manufacture at from $23 to 30 per At. Mr. W. is putting his mill in good or der and proposes to raise his dam several feet. The City Marshal has gone to the coast recuperate there is rest for hogs. In the land case between Win. McLeod and Burlingame the decision was reversed in favor of the former, who was the original claimant In a similar suit lxtween I Terra 1 and Shorb the division is against Herral, the orginal claimant, and in this care the land reverts to the Government. Lafferty shot a very large panther Monday night about dark, near his house. Flem Dobbins lost a very fine horse last week worth about $150. Disease unknown. John Cornelius has built himself a large granary, and also a brick milk house. Our school in the Oak Grove is out this week which has been taught by Miss Hattie Collier, who has proved to be a good teacher. Mr. Gardener who is Mr. D. O. Quick's head sawyer has nearly fin ished his fine residence. Now girls look out. The Nehalem folks intend to fin ish the State road in 2 or 3 weeks. The' have got down as far as the 2d crossing on Pebble Creek. Mr. V. P. Miller is paying 1 er folks a visit now, but intends leav ing soon for San Francisco. There is a prospect for a fine crop this year in this vicinity. Thero is not going to be many black-berries this year from some cause or other. Stkaooler. Mr. D. L. Tnrpin of Lafayeffe, the well known hotel man, visited Hillslsiro this week. He intends to take a year's vacation iu the hotel business soon. Jake Anderson has tho tallest com in town.
