Discovery of a Lost Plant.
A short time ago, wo cited a nnni
bcr of instances wherein i the vitality
bf seeds Lad been preserved for a
long period of years. There has
lately come to light a fresh case,
which will rank among the most cu
iious ou record. The mines of
Lam inn, in Greece, which were
worked about 1,600 years ago, are,
in a great measure, composed of sco
ria, or the refuse of ancient mines,
which still yields a high percentage
of silver. In clearing away ft mass
of tnis refuse, a quantity of seeds
were discovered, which must have
been buried for at least fifteen cen
turies. Restored to conditions fav
orably for germination, to the heat
of the sun and contact with the air,
the seeds gave signs of life, burst
their buds, sent down roots into the
earth, and threw up stems into the
light. When the last had budded
and blossomed, lo! a lost spec.es of
the genuH (Huucium (horned poppy)
of the order Papaveractv was revcalod.
Piiuy and Dioscorides frequently
describe the flower in their writings
with great particularity, as its golden
corolla is very beautiful; but it has
hitherto been unknown to modern
science. Now, the plant which had
disappeared from the face of the
globe for 1,511) years or more, is re
suscitated by :i .strange and happy
accident.

In preparing the present edition for the
press, it lias accordingly been the aim of
the editors to bring down the information
to the latest possible dates, and to furnish
dn accurate account of the most recent diH
oveiie. in science, of every ' fresh produc
tion in licetatnre. and of the latest inven
tions, in the practical arts, as well as to give
succinct and original record of tho prog

None of the original stereotype plates

printed on new type, forming in fact a new

The illustrations which, are introduced
for the first time in the prnent edition have
