Nearly all (be cities in the country have electric light plants operated by Auuricans. And right here fte will say that in Mexico all franchises are granted for a term of not over fifty years aud at the end of thai time they become the property of thw government. An improvement on the American method. In this city the rich have grand res idences and tlower gardens that bloom the year Ulotind. Also large plazas that are most beautiful. All cities in this country have lurge plazas main tained at the expeiisu of the people, and they are frequented by thousands of the inhabitants. Of course tho usual cathedral was visited aud it was an immense all'uir and richly furnished The city puts a person much in mind of the description of an Egyptian city, set up in the mountains of Switzer land. Lagos was also visited. It is a manufacturing city of 30,(100 and Is situated iu a fertile region. The valley ia a splendid agricultural one, ami the principal product of It ischile, or red pepper, which is shipped all over the Republic; and the wheat, corn, beans and chick-peas raised here are also noted for their superior qualities. The JJajio valley comes next, the first town being Francisco. The Hajio, which is probably the most extensive valley In tho republic, is par excellence 1 lie wheat raising country. It is peculiar to see oy. teams doing all the plowing In this country, and the old primitive wooden plow is useu everywhere. Hut tho land is fertile in moat sections und large crops are raised. The other towns of this vullcy are Silao, Leon, Irapuaio. Salaincii, IV 000 Inhabitants, Celaya, 30,000, Valley de Santiago, 10,000, Pueblos del Kincoli, besides hundreds of haciendas, each with about aa many inhabitants as a tmvn, are situated in this region. Leon Is the chief city, having KO.uOd inhabitants, and is a great manufactur ing center. Cotton and woolen goods, leather und aaddlery are produced here in large quantities and shipped all ovr the republic. Tills city is said to ullord admirable opportunities for Ameri can artisans with small capital to es tablish a pt.ying business. Ry taking advantage of the very cheap labor here one could improve on the native arti clis of manufacture and secure a lucra tive trade. The agricultural laborers in this country secure from lii to III cents per day; carpenters ubout 50 cents ter day; masons the same, and other artisans, more or less, in the same proportion. Laborers live on from three to len cents jht day. Silao is a great opal town. Cannot Vote, but May look Well.
