Portland Dispatch: "The last
Oregon legislature was a picnic as
compared to what the next prom-
ices to be. I he war will begin on
nizitinn of the house. The
RfMinte is undoubtedly under the
nnntrnl nf Mr. Simon, and if he
wants it, he will name himstll
nrcsident. In the house there is
iwliffcrent state of affairs. The
tlntnoorats nnd nouulifits have 17
members: Mitchell republicans 5,
and Union bimetalist 3, making a
total of 23. There are enough re
nuhlicar.s who are opposed to the
Simon faction, if united with these
to give the organization to the coin
hinpil onnosition. Should the
house thus be organized there will
bo a united action Uunng the ses
ninri. nnd no leizidlution will he
enacted unless it meets with the
annroval of the united minority.
It now stems almost certain that
the two houses will be organized
nn Urn Simon-Hourne lines. We
believe Mr. llourno will be able to
control the necetsarv live republi
can votes to secure his election
with the com hincd vote of the dem
ocrats. tionulists and bimetalist?
They can readily unite on him, and
there are several straight republi
cans who were elected on their free
silver professions. These could,
nnd iirnhiil.lv will. SlIliDOrl liilll
llesides this, it is well understood
that liourno U tho recognized
dominion of Senator Mitchell's
cause, and ho cannot antagonize
him without endangering msown
defeat. Mr. Hour ne has decidedly
tho vantage ground and he is not
likclv to lose it. He is a hard
fighter and has tho courage of his
convictions and the manhood to
maintain them. There is trouble
in store for tho brethren." '
Tho storm seems to bo over. It
has been an unusual one, especial
ly for this season of tho year.
Tho fall of 'tho beautiful'; is the
earliest over known in the Willam
ette valley, so our old pioneers in
form us. It is not likely to linger
long with us, wo hope.
Jonathan Bourne is a candidate
for speaker of tho house of the next
legislature lie claims that L.
Uilyeu and T. J. Vaughan of this
county, will vote for him.
Tho laboring man now pays
I. 10 per sack for the same Hour he
could buy three months ago for C5
cents; of course, he has his wages
raised in tho samo proportion.
Kx: Tho Oregonian .is actually
criticising a supreme court, holding
that C'h'el Justice Waldo was in
error when he declared the Oregon
registration law unconstitutional.
Is it po.-sible, that the editor of the
Oregonian has become an anar
chist? The Oregonian ia now virtually
favoring he "free trade" Wilson
bill, and thinks the republicans in
congress will favor it or a similar
measure. Tho "sound money"
democrats, it seems, are to dictate
the McKinley administration.
Portland Oregonian: It is re
ported that Jonathan llourno, Jr.,
has the resignation of O. N. Penny,
as secretary of the republican state
central committee, in his inside
pocket, aiul that lie will resume
tho duties of such position after
adjournment of thq legislature.
It would appear that the people
of Lane county are not mortgaged
very heavily. Only a total of il,
085,(505, ami it is probable that
quite a ;rood deal of this is not real.
The foreigners (all non-residents of
Oregon) only hold mortgagee to the
amount of $78,275. A low years
ago they possessed seven times this
amount.
To Wheeling, West Virginia,
belongs the distinction of the most
hilarious and picturesque parade of
the campaign. It was a great pop
ular demonstration in honor of
Mary Kllen Lease, mid both par
ties took an equal port in it. Two
thotnai I rtvo ! utii.ied men were
in line, dressed in female attire,
and mo exceedingly elaborate
costumes were worn. The advance
was taken by -i) old maids, attired
in curl papeis, night e'aps and
night gowns, each carried a lighted
candle, and close behind was Mrs.
Lease herself, represented by an
imitation young lady in an elabo
rato white silk party costume and
white fur-trimmed opera cloak,
sealed in a carriage drawn by four
horses and flanked by a body guard
of twentieth ceutury girls. i

In Senator Butler's addresses, as
chairman of the populist national
committee, issued recently, he
makes tbe assertion that if '25,000
more silver republicans had votsU

Nebraska statesman would have
been elected president.
I n viiMf f the talk about land

rash, but it is very nearly correct.

And so aho hied herself oil to tho Aator

Amaryllis was looking very and when
Frlvolo arrived. She tlldu't have Frlvolo's
rose and cream complexion nor Frlvolo's
merry laugh. But Frtvolo didn't appreci
ate her blcewlngi that morning. The first
thing she did wai to begin to sob.
'Frlvolo, dear, what is itf"
"Oh, nothing, only I wish I wish I
could have a littlo wrin-klo In my forehead
like you, and then people would any I
thought sometime."
Amaryllis rang for tea.
"I'm so discouraged, Amaryllis," and
she rolled her handkerchief Into a ball and
dabbed oacb eye.
"I want to be sensible and serious, and
I don't know how. I want to lie clever
and Improve my mind. I want to bo like
you!" And such a picture of appealing
misery tho sliver teapot hud scarce reflect
ed before.
Amaryllis looked horrified.
"Mr. Van Schalck, the awfully clever
one, who write books and Is a lawyer and
la going to congress and all that, you
know, ho well, ho culled oneo and awhilo,
and he snld I was a f-fenthcrhead. Oh,
whut a dreadful word!"
"And you wish to pleaso this gifted
creature?" wild Amaryllis, dropping a lump
of sugar Into Frlvolo's tea. "Suppose you
rend some. Tuko up a course of history.
Dolly Madison Is a fad JiiHt now. Head
up Dolly and tho wur of lb 12. War makes
good small talk these days, nnd If ho Is go
ing to congress"
"It sounds very hard," faltered tho am
bitious ona "But I'll try."
"Thut'a right, dour. Now I'll confldo In
you. Frlvolo, I want to bo frivolous."
"Oh, Amaryllis!"
"I'm tired of being learned. I want to
know how to be attructlvo and pleasant
when people are tired as well as when they
are freah and ready to listen and nrgue. I
want to bo like you. Now tell mo how.
You never weary peoplo or task their In
tellects or upset their nerves, You amuse
them and refresh them."
"Oh, talk nonsenso and wear pretty
dresses, and when the atmosphere Is sad
just curl your hair all over. I think you
are awfully foolish though. I don't know
much about anything else, but momma
always suld a flirt was born a flirt, and I
think you would not bo half so nice If you
wore frivolous, Amaryllis."
Bo they ported.

It was fragrant and softly gloomy In the
lampllghted iihikIo room, and Frlvolo,
looking rather white and anxious, sat bolt
upright on tho piano stool.
All doy sho had been "studying liter
ature" nnd "Improving her mind." Kings
and queens were to her as so many puppets.
Paganism and civilization were mere
words to pbiy with. She wm well tip in
literature. It was a novel position for Frl
volo, ond when Mr. Von Sctmlck was ush
ered In he wos surprised. She didn't run
into tho hall to meet him with somo ab
surd wcleonio which ho hoard, mlsundor
stood and analyzed aa charming. Sho
didn't laugh ond shake her hand vigorous
ly and then sit down with a cloud of frills
around her and chatter to him.
A Ins, sho did nothing of the kind! Ho
awoko her from a scene of carnage when
ho entered, nnd she raised two brilliant
eyes and a flushed fnco from her book, nel
voneed with Intense, suffering depicted on
every feature, and wringing his hand said:
"Oh, Mr. Van Seholck, how ghul I am
to see you I Wasn't it perfectly dreadful
about poor Mory, queen of Scotnf"
It was vory unkind of him, but Mr. Von
Seholck went awny to tho mountains next
day. Ho declared that his nerves were com
pletely shaken up.
Amaryllis shook the silver tea bell an
grily, and Frlvolo allowed two meandering
tears to caress her pink checks.
"Well, it's a consolation, anyhow,
Amaryllis, to know that you were not a
success,"
"Thanks," said Amaryllis.
"What did they say when you tried to bo
llko mef"
"Well, I don't like to seem rude, Frlvolo,
dear, but the family wouldn't listen. They
simply absconded. The girls all sold I hod
turned Into ' Dodo. You remember Dodo
In the book who talked aliout her baby as
landed proprietor and w ished she could
be a Christlnu martyr, so that her fingers
would curl up liko luieon when they burn
ed her at the stake?
"Then my laugh you know you laugh
all tho time, Frlvolo well, my laugh
scared Bob so that ho knocked over a vase
which father brought lrom Kgypt, and
they all concluded that 1 was hysterical
and hud better take a vocation."
"Poor Amaryllis! I ll go wltbayou, If
my gray frock comes home."
"And vhat did Mr. Van Schnlck say
after you tried to open the conversation?"
"Say? Why, he almost fainted, and
well, I don't think he appreciates clever,
cultured women. It all depends on what
ono Is used to, I suppoae."
And then they drunk some more tea.
