Promoted From a Ill-a-VYrrK Job Piivltig a Laundry Muc ni to a S5,000-a-Year Job In Congress. Last sum mer he w a. anxious to come to Etigeuo to drive the ice delivery wugou and made application for tlie Job. Mr Mayer says he Is very studious and well jHwIed on the political Isstii s of tlio day, aud possesses considerable tali ut and natural ability. The Port laud Telegram of June 3 has this: "The Uuuties and the possibilities of American citizenship. From the laundry wagon to the.hulls of congress; and credit to the man that mnde the running. "Martin (Jiilnu, driver for a steam laundry of Portland, through a split In tho republican party, which could not but mean defeat aud ruin, b aps from the obscurity of a $Il-a-week Job, handling soiled linen, to tlie proud eminence of representing tlio state of Oregon at the capital of the nation, and be it known that Mr Qtiinii, de spite his humble occupation, will in no way bring discredit upon the stste, so fur as Intelligence and ability to ex -press himself is concerned. Iu fact, liiselcctlou may e almost attributed to the splendid showing madeby him on the platform during tlie lute cam paign in the brilliancy of his speeches. Men who were not populists listened to his silvery oratory and In sheer sympathy for the man and his bouud less ambition cast their votes for him. Asa resu.t the laundry wagon driver goes to congn ss in precedence of men leurued and experienced in the needs of the nation. Truly it may besuld that the knock of fortune ut Martin Qulun's door was not unheeded.
