F. T. Kraft, who runs the store, has
followed bis trade for many years. One
'da si yea BB Kraft WM walking
i;own Broadway when ho saw a clock in
V jeweler's window with the same da
iries. He stood for an hour in front of
1 glass watching it and trying to solve
'tis problem of its construction. The
proprietor 0f the store told him the clock
'lii been made in England twenty-five
Irian before, and was the only one of its
'liind in existence. Mr. Kraft's request
to have a look at the mechanism was
met with a refusal, and he went off with
the determination to study it out for
lmself. He worked at it six months
during his odd hours and finally tri
i nmnhed. Then he was surprised to find
bow simple the idea was after all, al
though he found the greatest delicacy
necessary in carrying it out
Mr. Kraft took the clock from its shelf
la the window to explain its mechanism
to the reporter. The two mysterious
vires which the ball strikes against at
the end of each trip are fastened above
to long rod. From the upper side of
this rod runs a strip of steel, 'which rests
igainst one of four pins on an escape
Dent wheel in t'ue uoilrj. When the
bn strikes the wire it releases this
wheel, which, makes a quarter revolution
to the next pin. On the same axis is a
cog wheel whose teeth fit into those of
mother of half the circumference. The
nnaller wheel makes a half revolution
while the other is making a quarter. To
the axis of this wheel is fastened a rod,
which is attached at its other end to the
platform, which is pulled up or down ac
cording to the wire which the ball
strikes.
It was in the manufacture of the ball
itself that Mr. Kraft had the most diffi
culty. It had to be a perfect sphere to
work properly, and it was turned down
bit by bit to the proper size. A little
guard rail is placed at each angle of the
groove, so that the ball will not jump
off. It takes the ball just five seconds
to make the trip, a half second for each
lection of the groove. The platform acts
u s pendulum with a five second swing.
The device is only interesting as a novel
ty, as it is more susceptible to changes
in the weather than the pendulum clock,
and has to be regulated frequently.
It is interesting to figure out the dis
tance which the industrious little ball
travels from day to day. Every second
it runs 4 3-5 inches, or 22 feet a minute.
This is a quarter of a mile an hour, or
I miles a day, or 180 miles a month, or
fl,790 miles a year, over 11,000,000 feet
Since the clock was first started the
ball has traveled a distance equal to
Dearly three-fourths of the way around
the globe. In that time it has not been
worn to any perceptible degree, although
the brass surface on which it runs has
been ground off considerably.
"I have had lots of offers for this
clock," said the old jeweler, as he put it
back on its shelf, "but I wouldn't sell it
for any price. It was a pleasure to work
out the principle of the thing, but you
couldn't get me to make another one of
them for a good deal" New York Sun.
. Dispatch. . ,
Affected dispatch is one of the most
dangerous things to business that can be.
It is like that which the physicians call
predigestion, or hasty digestion, whick
it sure to fill the body full of crudities
and secret seeds of disease. Therefore
measure not dispatch by time of sitting,
but by the advancement of the business,
tnd as in races it is not the large stride
or high lift that makes the speed, so in
cosiness the keeping close to the matter,
tnd not taking of it too much at once,
procures dispatch. It is the care of some
only to come off speedily for the time, or
to contrive some false periods of bud
neas, because they may seem men of dis
patch; but it is one thing to abbreviate
by contracting, another by cutting off,
tnd business so handled at several sit
tings or meetings grows commonly back
ward and forward in an unsteady manner-

Book agents follow the motto, "When
everything else fails try curiosity," and
it usually wins. An old fanner south

laggeetlou for a Marina Barometer.
A suggestion for bettering weather
predictions has been made by Cupt
Franklin Fox, a well known Englixh
seaman. During January, 1S90, when
torriflo galea burst upon the British
Islands, he finds that barometers at
London gave no reliable monition" of
these disastrous cyclones. His owu
Idea Is that the atmospheric power of
rising or depressing tho mercury In a
barometer Is affected by tho amount of
electricity In the air at tlte moment,
and that "to have strict, reliable weather
glasses we require electrio tests of the
conditions of the atmosphere attached
to them."
It may be true, as Capt Fox has sup
posed, that electricity has an effect on
the oscillations of the mercury in the
glass. During tho passago of an elec
trio storm over a station the mercury,
for reasons never fully explained, al
most Invariably rises or falls very rap
idly, though it often returns to its pre
vious level when the storm Is past
There Is little doubt that the electrical
state of clouds, as Lord Raylelgh has
shown, determines their precipitation,
and the down rush of rain, always ac
companied by a down rush of ah-, will
tend to sustain or elevate the mercury
an effect likely to be Intensified when
the descending air Is filled with the
smoke and dust arising over a great city.
When, therefore, a great storm Is ap
proaching, and clouds In Its front are
la that electrical condition which fa
vors heavy and prolonged precipita
tion from them, the effect may very
naturally account for the barometric
phenomenon noted by Capt Fox. At
all events, the series- of experiments
which he proposes could not fail to
throw new and valuable light upon the
degree of reliance to be placed upon
the weather glass. If the Invention of
a reliable marine barometer should be
the result of such experiments it would
be the means of saving thousands of
lives and ships from Uie ocean cyclone.
