Koial Uakuo Pownn Co.. 106 Wall Bt., N. Y. &AKIN0 Mau Shot Near Sublimity. Salem Journal. Deo. 10. Yesterday afternoon about three o'clock, a terrible tragedy occurred near Sublimity, Ihe detail of which are of a most shocking character. The circumstances were about a follows Mr. Thus. Hammond aud hi. twelve year old son, Oral), who live at 8tay tou, went to the farm of Mr. Hammoud'i father two and one-half miles northeast of Sublimity. There they were joined by Mr. Win. Higgs, whoso farm joins Ihe Hammond place. No particulara are known except the story of Mr. Hammond, which is a follows: A band of ipiail wa started up and Mr. llammoud hot one bird. Then his son wished to have a shot at tho rest. To Ibis the father consented, and as he and Mr. Rigg were directing the boy how to shoot, the latter stood to tho left of the boy, and almost at Ihe end of thu gun. A the hoy raised the piece lo fire the father ay be was very nervous, not being used to shoot ing, and as Ihe bird llew lo tho left the boy hastily aud excitedly find, lodging the en tire charge in Ihe right side of Mr. King's head and jaw, blowing one side of hi head entirely off, and causing instaut death. An inquest wa held before Cyrus Clark, jus lice of the peace, ami tho verdict of Ihe jury wa that "deceased met death by Ihe acciden tal discharge of a gun in Ihe hand of Orau llammoud.'' Immediately after the iiuuet both Mr. Hammond nud his sou were attested aud held to uwait examination Ihi afternoon at 2:30 ou the charge of manslaughter. This action wa brought about by the friends of Mr. Rigg declaring that hu and Mr. Ham mond bad had an altercation at Sublimity Sunday morniiig.caused by Rigg' stock tun ning on the Hammond farm without con sent. The ouly witnesse to the terrible tragedy were Mr. Hammond aud hi son hence any evidence or testimony agaius him must necessarily be of a circumstantial nature. llammoud deuies that ho and Rigga had ever had any trouble, und emphatically declares his innocenuo of Ihe bloody deed. In an interview with Mr. Hammond he in sist that if ho had intended lo commit the tragedy ho would uot have been so carelena as to take his young son with him. II feela perfectly easy n to tho outcome of tho mat ter in so far a fastening any blame to him or his sou, except, perhaps, that they may have beeu somewhat ruleless iu the use of thoir gnu. It was discovered by those whom Mr. llammoud railed lo the acenu where he had left his son with the dead man, whilo he went to Mr. Riggs' homo for help, that both barrels of the gun wero slill loaded. This fact leads to tho suspicions which caused Mr. Hammond' arrest. What could have been the motive for reloading tho gun, or whether other weapons playod a part in Ihe tragedy is unknown. I'lii) whole thiug is a terrible blow to tho community in which it occurred, and all joiu iu tho hope that Ihe verdict of the coro ner's jury may not be reversed. Roth the gentlemen seem to be highly respected by all thoir neighbors, and Iho outcome of the case will bo looked for with intense interest. A Cold-iVater Oazell. The man with beer stains on his vest. shall never fold me to bis breast. The mau who hits the opium pipe, ia hatdly worth his weight in tripe. And Ihu man who smokes thu cigarette must keep off my side of the street! I'bo man whoso breath with cloves is scented, shall wed not mo till I'm demented, Through my affectioua if you'd wade, drink nothing slrouger'u lemonade.
