After a careful scrutiny of their county ticket we fail to find a single soldier of tne rebellieu on it, aliconch there a' many iu Lane county who would have re fleeted credit upon the ticket. It i crow for the soldier and tudtey for the valiant warrior who fouiht at home with his tongue. I he Democratic ticket has one Uuiou soldier npon it, who served throughout the war. Ruhawat. Friduy morning the white horse uthiohed to Reed's delivery wagon turned over tho wagon at Rankin's corner throwing the driver, Flank Page ofl catching him in tho gearing and drugging him across the street when he got free with no other damage than a brnised leg. The damages to the vehicle were light. This is the second runaway for said white cuitan. Iscipiknt Fiuk. The outhonses at Mr, Jacob Conser residence by some means got on fire Thursday and burnt fiercely for a time until a hose was attached to the water Cipes that fortunately had been 'aid the day efore, and the fire was soon extinguished. Tb Eutaiiaus will elect new officer to day. The surveying class has begun field work this term. Prof. Johnson v.a serenaded by a party last Suturday eve. The Laurean will give another open sec tion in a short tiniu. Miss Annie Itolierts and Mr, Ilerhort Condon began school this term. Miss Annie Craiu left this week to begin a term of school iu the country. Some of the seniors have beeu getting their picture taken lately. Mark makes a good appearance. Among the students this term we mis the face of Messrs Porter, McCormao and Wie, and Misses Porter and Craiu. The- question, "Resolved, the third party is a hindrance to the temper ance cause," will be discussed next l'ri Friday in the Eutaxian' society. Among the other uovslties of the week we observed one of the aeniors sporting an olive hat; two others had white lists, all beiug the samo shape. We presume the seniors have a monopoly ou this shape of hals. The Lainvnns did not feast on peanuts as they expected during the holiday w k. This accounts for the disappbrnti Q and hungry look which some of these gentlemen now wear, who remaimd in Eugene through va cation. Iu the last issue of the paper a mistake was made by the typo iu describing the chestuut psrty. It should have read, "Th chestuut jmrty was a success as every one well knows on considering that batch camp Uiimber 1 got it up." After Mr. McCormao left we heard the next moruing that he barely escaped missing thetrniu. We next beard that while board ing the train at Oregon City he tell and bus tamed severe injuries. We were nimble to obtaiu further particulars hut hope he is nut hurt seriously. The recently published M. 8. miscalled the Second Book of Chronicles, which cre ated something uf a literary sensation in cer tain circles is evidently spiuious or nt hast its value has been destroyed by the interpo lation of liuprinuirded scribe. In proof of this we cite the urge number of modern word it contains, tho strange mixture of archaic aud recent forms, and the astonish ing conglomeration of Jacobins, Ft titans and Saiihediims. Well informed petsons look with distrust on such two-wei ks-nfie -it-happeued article and sre in liu.d to belli ve that this questionable manuscript would be more appropriately culled ths Book of Chestnuts. Mr. Brattaiu returned fioiu Portland last Saturday evening wyth a bran new white bat and a strange appearing black mustache, Wbeu Mr. B. Walked the streets next day be was frequently taken for a drummer. Hard ly anyone recugnied iu the while hat and daik mustache the jully-looking senior of last term, for it will be renn uiln red his mus tache then was very liuhiiu color, nnd this sudden change from light lo dark trans figured h's whole appeaniuce. Mr. Builtnin probably had bis mustache dyed temporarily to see the effect. When he attempted to get the dye off what must have been his terror aud surprise lo find it was impossible to bo, removed. He sport it now iu as becoming a manner as possible. Evidently Mr. Brat taiu believes "urt is more pleasing to the eye than Uut ure." With this issue of the column; tliis pen will erase to write for tho iuteresta of the Eutsxian society, for the eiilighteumeiit of the people, for tho amusement of the stu dents, for the welfare of the Gcaho, for tho peace of the Corporation, for the general benefit of the country. Yes, dearly loved and respected friends, we know this pen is so rusty it scratehe and teui s the pap"r. We hope that any scratches now existing, tho n-sult of some careless item in the column during the last three months will immediate ly heal with tho lust stroke of this pen. For the scratches and tears were made by the pen and the existing circumstances not by the wish of the editor, therefore as tho pen is to be thrown aside and the circumstances are changed, there is uo reason whalevt r lo bear any ill-will against ihe editor. This peu, although dying a natural death, is worn out b) the frequent battle wiih Laurean editors. Wbeu first this pen tntcred oil the editorial field it looked forward with innocent, trust ing faith to a peaceful term, unruffled by the attacks and dissensions of editorial strife, but alas! how soon was this happy dieum blasted by a merciless attack cm Eutaxian ability and integrity Ihrougb. Laurean in fluence. We were culled upon by the stern convictions of duty and os ia well known we upheld anil defended our society even at the expense of persouul feeling. We are always ready to protect the society ngsinst any thrusts of tho Laureans. We advertised the vrtues ot the senior class to the utmost of our ability, yet we never expect any thank for such hard work. We gave an impartial and just account of the last Laureau open session, and we huve never received a single'' compliment for our pains. We told the reason why the Lutaxians visited the Latin an society that time when both leaders of the debate had the messlt ( and they accused us of "taking advantage of leap year " We suggested that the members of the Corpora tion, after every affair was settled, burn np the "mutual agreement stul save the asbes in a golden sarcophagus, hut hardly anyone kuows now what became uf that precious parebmeut. We published a. comical and veiy uncomplimentary valentine and every body thought we received it ourselves, .We advised the Ixiye to chew guiu rather than waste their time iu idle talk on the postoffice corner, but tbey spend mure time there than ever aud chew cigarrette stumps instead. We tried to make the Gdaiid the leading paper of the Northwest and even published a a prospectus of the contributors, but not one of the gills would write a single item therefore our grest plan fulled. W begged the Laureans nut to squander their money ou trifles but save it iu order to buy A piano for the society ball, but at the very next meeting of the society they lavished money iu paying np the due of persons who had ni t attended the society for five years aud probably will never attei.d again. We edited our column with a roos ter at the bead crowing over the Eutaxian victory and some of the Eutuxiaus were of fended because w didu't have a hen in stead. We desorilwd ihe last corporation meeting in Old English stjle and the Lau reans were so pleased they wrote a descrip tion of the same subject aud in the same style as near as they possibly could. We could tell many more ot the great things we have done but we will refraiu aud say the scratching of this pen should have ceased before the ink corroded the brass aud dulled the point. The wood-box or wuste-psper basket into which our pen is thtown should be kept clean aud neut and everything suita ble fur the last resting place ut a ru-ly pen. We ask this favor on the same principle as the person iu that touching song, "See that my Grave is Kept Greeu;" so "see that my box is kept clean. " Notk k. The Linn Co.
