THE EUGENE CITY GUARD. 8ATUKDAY ANill, !, 1837. The Auotiatcil Prra Tlio Associated Prow in an bitterly partisan now as it wa l.efcre tho moc tion of Cleveland, and as it wan im- immediatclv after tlio Presidential campaign of 1884, when all fair1" lie publican paper coiict'deded tlio elec tion of Cleveland, and when the Anno tated Promt wan w'ndinjj out their ly ina reports to the contrary. An in ventilation showed that Whitela Iteid, of New York, was its controlling unirit. and dictated its nolicv. Tlio -i t Associated Press is nothing more than the New York Tribune, the most un reliable paper in the country. Coming through this medium the news is clipped, distorted, and changed to suit the Tribune views, to misrepre sent the actions of Democratic ollicers, and to magnify tho achievements of the Republican party. The latest and most ml (able un truths that have been industriously scat tered in the Northwest by the Associ. alcd Tress are that President Cleveland vetoed the River and IliyUr Hill and the bill annexing Northern Idaho to to Wasliiiiiton Territory. That being afraid to veto them outright and oppos ho to tho measures, ho refused to put his signature to the bills and defeated them in this manner. The truth was that Congrens in ils lust hours rubbed through CO liills. which tin- President had not time to read over, much less to examine, who like the pru dont, conscienscious and tagacious man he is, refused to sign bills, whose provisions ho knew nothing about. Tho President did right in this a Hair, and the blame cannot bo shifted but must rest on tho Legislative branch of the Government which after dawdling four months away passed such an important act as tho lienoral Deficiency bill after the 49th Congress under tho provision of tho Constitution of tho United States was adjourned sino die. It is the work of the Associated Press to misrepresent all Democrats and Domocratio measures,'anu its re ports in political measures should be looked upon with suspicion.
