Will Stimpson, while on his way from Pilot Rock to Camas, Umatilla county, Was shot at bv three men, several shots being tired ; his horse was shot from un der hun, one ball struck his gun and an' other his saddle. It is not known who did the shooting. The governor has appointed Thomas B. Clifford, New York, to 'be commis iioner of deeds for Oregon, and Charles B. Orai of Lower Cornucopia, W. O. Miller and Miss Annia Douglas. The nappy young couple were preparing to go to house-keeping at their own home, and were sojourning at the residence of Mr. Murray, on bight Mile, when Mrs. Miller was taken suddenly ill and in a few hours was a corpse. It ap pears that some strychnine had been put in a bottle previously containing eough medicine, and the young lady, who was suffering from a slight cold, took a loso of the deadly stuff without knowing tho danger. Lemasters tells us that he will start up the arastra next week on his claim near Pochahontas. He thinks he has the best mine in the country Many rich discoveries of quartz have and are being made on Pine creek, nine miles west of this city. We will have more to say about them in the future. .': .Bore man & Co.'s mine, situated in the Virtue mining district, is running on fuft time, and we hope to see this placer mine pay as well this spr ng as it has previously done.... John Landry & Co. commenced work in their placer claims, on Trail creek, yesterday. They expect to have an abundance of water, as ttie snow on the surrounding mountains is six feet deep. . . . V'e are informed that some par ties have employed experienced Califor nia prospectors to scour the Pocahontas mountains in search of ledges. Mitchell, of this city, showed us a lot of fine specimens of quartz taken from his discovery situated souie ten or fifteen miles south of this city. If he has much of such rock in Bight there is millions in it. He now has a large force of men busily engaged running a tunnel to tap the vein lower down II.P. Nitche.ore of the discoverers of the Tom Paine extension, called at this office this week and showed some of the finest specimens of free-milling gold ore we have eye looked at. He haa three other ledgea and the ore all looks good. How strange that these ledges have lain within eight miles of town for the past twenty years without being discovered. . . .Dan Patter ton showed us the other day a boulder, or, what is termed in mining parlance, a wash rock, from a mine distant eonie twenty-eight miles from Baker City. The specimen is of quarti formation and covered so thick with gold that it would be impossible to touch the surface with a pin toint and not strike the preciow meUl. Charles Schanno, the Yakima brewer, convicted of manslaughter in killing Adam Goldstein August Cth, has suc ceeded in having his sentence set aside. He is now under bonds to appear before the next grand jury. Walla Walla Statrtman, May 6: John P. McKinnev, a soldier recently dishon orably discharged, was found wandering around in the brush about ten miles be low town, in a demented condition, and brought to this city. Last Saturday a voting man named Stidwell, in the emnloy of Dave Miller, of Seniiahuioo, while working around' a horse, was kicked by the animal iust lie low the heart, and the next day he diud from the effects of the kick. Dr. J. S. Smith, of Sprague, drove out of town with his little bod, early last week, and since has not lieen heard of by his friends, w ho can think of no reason for his disappearance and conjecture that he is temporarily demented. Sixteen heads of mares, two-year-olds and three-vear-olds, belonging to Dr. Boyd, of Walla Walla, were crowded over a bluff into a ravine several days ago and killed. His house and barn con taining his winter supplies were burned to the ground. Rev. Haskell, a Walla Walla minister, jumped a land claim some time since and started a man to work plowing it up, but the neighbors congregated one night this week, fenced the claim for the original claimant and placed the jumper's Jlow outside the fenye. Virgil Lewis, son of ex-Sheriff Lewis, was killed by being thrown from ahorse, near North Yakima, last Sunday. He was about twenty-one years old. His oldest sister and her child were drowned in the Yakima, a few years ago, near where he was killed. Edward W. Strong, at La Camas, had a narrow escape last week for his life. The cog of a rapidly revolving wheel caught his coat, and he braced himself to prevent being drawn into the wheel, lie had nothing left on him but a collar and boots when he gained his freedom There are in Washington territory the following number of churches by denom inations: Protestant Episcopal, 16; Methodist Episcopal, 53 ; Congregational, 45; Presbyterian, 59; Roman Catholic, 38 ; Baptist, 33. Tlere are 53 newspapers published in the territory, of which 9 are dailies, and there are 1C national and 12 private banks. Friday night Hugh Medlock went to E. 0. Jones' staUe and stated that Mrs. A. Bowles, living near the depot, was dead, and he desired a horse in order that he might ride out to her father's, on the Cottonwood, and inform the family of the sad and unexpected event. A horse was furnished him. Medlock not returning Saturday morning, aa prom ised, incfuiry was instituted and Mrs. Bowles was found to be alive and well.
