OREGON AND WASHINGTON. T. 0. Mortimer, of Coos countj, ha been adjudged insane and wu taken to the asylum last week. John Renholm got hi leg broken at Empire Citj on the 5th inst, by a plank breaking in the sidewalk. Annie, a littln 7 year old child of 0. Mattoon, of Drain, caught her dress on fire, and o seriously was the bunted that ibe died of the injuries. Three hunters in the Cascade moun tains became surrounded by fire and had to run for life. One of the num ber had his whiskers scorched. A party conitisting of J. W. How trd, Drs. Whitcaker and Atkins, left tVinerille a few weeks ago to explore that portion of the country at the head of the Deschites a little south wettt of the Three Sisters, and found a country -abounding in beautiful lakes, on the SBttntit of tbo Cawade mountains. Tfcey expect to return next year. Aa old settler informs us that T. D Merry is unfortunate in his reminis cences in the Sunday Oregonian, where be refers to the late A. J. Moody as Ihe first Sheriff of this county. That Is an error and ignores Chick, Haskell, Davis, McNaiuara, Dryden and Hack er, all of whom held the office prior to Moody. Such leaps in chronology are unpardonable and need settling aright Coast MaiL , Mr. E. T. Miller placed on our table a specimen of one of the greatest natural curiosities it has been our priv ilege to witness for some time. It con sisted of a fir bough coated to the depth of half an inch in places with a clear white candy. The specimen came from the neighborhood of Bald mountain, northwest of Kings valley, whero we are informed nearly all the trees are so coated. It is evidently crystallized boney-dow, tnd must exist in immense quantities in that section. Tho set , tiers gather 1t and manufacture it into syrup for table use. Oregon against the world. Itemizor. Mr. Wendell Philip expresses him elf as follows: "I distrust and des pise the Republicans as hypocrites and time-servers, aa double dealers, as soul less carrion, masquerading in the grave clothes of their honest predecessors. ' They have no right to swrk their, can didate among tho high-minded and preferable, Let them choose a fitting leader from among tho Towksbury marshes, the peddlers of poor men's lionet" " General Sherman has fixed upon the rst of Novemlier as the date upon whkh he will turn over his command 'to Genoral Sheridan although he wilj mot bo plaoed on lliti retired list of tho iarmy until the 8th of February, EUGENE tVIILLS THE EUGEN'E MILLS AHK ABOUT Maul kA at art in Hnrlr. f .....v.... ioa U hM been much unmivil id thp of STONES, ROLLS, BOLT REELS, FLOUR PACKER and WATER WHEEL, which double Ui capacity of th Milla-alao duubl th power-and baa tean undergoing thorough and general reur, whkh placet tb ' juuu .quai v in.
