CLEAVER, Real b-tat Agrit ttlllDf Tbrlr Woi5 Id. , The attempt on part of Republican! to foist Sam Randall with It in .inciden tal protection theory upon tbn Demo cratic party, as a candidate for th? PrenidHiicy, mutt le costing them a deal of money. It liegint to look as if a number of Democratic pa pen had bren auhnidizcd, and while w have no fears that Randall will stand ghost of a bIiow for the nomination, we are cer tain! that the Republican politicians are gutting their' woricA ill on unsuspecting Deaiccrils hy milting his campaign and pernicious incidental protection theory popular with a considerable fao tion of the Democrat io party. ' 36 that when the Rrpnhlicaa party occupies tlmt position in tho m-xt campaign, it can hope to draw lurgrly front - Deino crats who have been inducer! to endorse this innovation on their party princi ples. It always has been the platfortA theory of the Republicans, and it wjll be an easy matter for Republican pill-' ticiaiis tc satisfy those who are com- mitted to protection in any degree, that that party is the best represenative ot the doctrine in any of its degrees or phases. The principles of protection and tariff for revenue only are as dis tinctive as freedom and slavery, or right and wrong ; thero ii no half-way ground upon which thfse two antagonistic prin ciple. harmonize, and the sooner that Democratic politicians and papers learn to avoir! all dinhonest devices, the bet ter for their party and country, and the sooner the people will ho delivered from the duhonett exactions of class rapacity. , ', Snooting Hear tafaytile. . j McMixxTfLLK, Juno 10. At tho Crystadelpliian meeting today near Lafayette, Rev. L T. Nichols was shot by the sons (rumor says) of the la,ffe Frank Martin. Tho mother th-l oys; who did the shooting has had much mental suffering lately, it is said, y Nichols' teaching, by which reflec tion was cast upon the memory of her ate husband. Nichols also had some thing to do about her property. Mrs. Martin went to the meeting to day and !ier sons, William and Jan cs, aged about 23 and 30 years, followed to take her away and bring her home. Some of the brethren interfered. This nraged the Martins, and they being powerful men, physically, knocked down thosn about them, right :-anti htU Nichols ran, and was shot in tho babk ho ball entering just above the right hip and lodging against tho skin of the abdomen. Tlia Martin boys have the sympathy of the community. Some' think Nichols will not prosecute, but play tho role, of a religious martyr.
