Tho city debt of Astoria, Junuary 1,

$12,000 wero in bon ts payable in 1889,
and $7,401 31 in warrants, drawing

Snohomish City, W. T., has about
500 inhabitants; a class of people that
aro sociable, intelligent and industrious.

again. When some- one asked him why
he didn't make one more effort he re

On November 20th James ,Bradley
a negro living at Pell's Ferry, Pitt
county, disappeared, and all search fop .
dm proved fruitless. He was aboutt
to marry a woman of that section,
when two women came from Hyde
county, each of whom declared she was
Bradley s wife, and each exhibited
child, of which ho was alleged to be
tho father. These developments brok -
off the marriage and threw- Bradley
into a fit of rage and despair. Ii
went to the :ot ton-gin house while the
ubrrcrs were at dinner, it is thought,
and threw himself into the half-filled
box in which tho cotton is packed into
bales. When tho laborers returned
10 box was filled and the Me was
tressed, bagged and sold. In a few
ays it was shipped to Greenville.
Iioro a trader, cutting into it, found ft
shoe, This, to his horror,, he found
contained a foot. The bale was then
torn apart by the eager crowd,' whert
tho body of Bradley was exposed,'
pressed flat and with the head crushed
to a jelly. Tho evidence , shows that
the negro, declaring that ho would end
his life, took several drinks and threw
himself in the press. The case excites
unusual and widespread excitement Itj
was at first stated that Bradley had
been thrown into the press, but this
was proved to have been false, although?
the laborers were all discharged.
