TCE EB3EKE CITY GUARD. ECCKNE ClaT.ORKUOX. 8ATUK1JAY. JUJSriC C8. 1S79. 1 Un Iildltr Displaced by Badicali. Colouel ChaiUs Tricehel, who fought gallantly during the war, and waa woandad, hat been removed from la position ha held in tbe New Yoik 'Custom House, to gi re placa to a brother-in-law of lh fraudulent Vice-President Wheeler, who never uraelled powder during the war, and escaped to Canada to aroid the draft. It ia remarkable that none of the Had ical organs have any thing to offer in denunciation of the matter. They can patiently and with atolid uncon cern observe crippled, blind, legless Union aoldicra on the street earners, objects of charity, beseeching alms, some with hand organs, olhera with placards on their bream descriptive of their pitiablo eonditien, ai.d pans tbem by without the small gift of a nickel. They can see the needy and worthy Union soldier jostled away trem the lino of official position by a big, burly bounty-jumper, by a sleek, well-fed, political wire-puller, who staid at home during the war, or by 4 ahobby contractor who robbed tli Government in its extremsst perial, and swindled the troops in the field in their rations and clothing; and, in fact, they assist these classes to oh tain the offices in prelerence to the poor fellows who did the fighting in the war. But the moment that a Union soldier, who is a Radical and not crippled, is removed by Demo crats, in high planes, in order to up point a crippled Union soldier, who ia a Democrat, in his stead, then these Radical organs open their batteries, and blaze away with vehemence and leyar iniignaiion. They stale the fact that a Union soldier has been re moved from oflbo by the Democrats, hut they omit to state also that he was sound in body and limb, and that his plaoe had been filled by a crippled Union soldier. It is thoir way. lion. Thomas Ewlng. Those who talk of the Democratic nominee for Governor of Ohio being a weak man must speak without knowledge. Not within the range ot political aspirants is there a man who combines within himself as many elements of popularity and svailabili . i mi n . . ij as wsnerai inomus .wiug. lie is the son of the ablest luwyer that Ohio ever produced, and it is even not too much to say that the United States, in his lay, had not his mi peri or. l he son. ot whom wo ikivv write. DaTmpon'i Abate of Power. An investigation is going on before United Si a tea Commissioner Lyman, in New York, of the conduct ot tbo notorious John I. Davenport, the Federal Super isvr of Election for that citr, which ha breught out a dangeroua feature of the Federal eleo lien laws. It was proved that Da venport had issued some of tbe war rants against naturlized citizens with out even geing through the formality t a aworn complaint. It ia true one of Lis Clerks had copied a list of naturalized - citizens, and aworn te complaints in a bunch. But so euro lessly was the wliolenU system ot arrests conducted, that Davenport did not affix his jural to so mo of the complaints. When this came eut in evidence, Davenport exclaimed: "Well, whatot it? The law does not even require me to have a written complaint in order to issue a warrant." Now, it is a serious matter for natur alized voters, and in fact for all voters, thai a Supervisor ol Election may or der arrests on the eve of election by merely an oral eharge,'wiihout exam inalion by any committing magistaate except the man who issu.s it. It can be done in fan Francisco us easily as in New York, and so long as the law stands and the I'adicals can enforce it the probability of the imposition ol its eutragcoiis provisions upo;i natur ali.ed citizens who are Democrats ii very stroug at least in every large city where the Democrats m.-ijority run be overcome- by such villainy And it is a law which affords such monstrous opportunity fur the com mission of the greatest wrong a citi zen can suffer on his franchise) that the Radicals persist in upholding and Hayes maintains it bv vet pewer ha Honorable Course. It is gratifying, says the Democrat, te see ono influential Republican sheet that has the wellare of the na tion at heart, and has the courage and maniless to denounce the manner in which members of its party are trying to sectionalize the oountrv. The following is frem the San Fran cisco Argonaut, edited by Frank M. I'ixley, one ot the leading Repnbli can journals ot California: If wo can't elect a Republican President without I ring about the South and wilheut drugging liom its sepulchre the skeleton of the civil war, without exciliujg sectional jeul usiesand stirring the angry ptuwictm of another intcrueciane strife, we had better suffer defeat. No bloody shirt, un this side of the continent and furnishes a conspicuous instance of transmitted wori'u, instead of, as is most usual, degenerate merit. lie is a man of imposing presence and massive brain, f As a public speaker, ho is engaging and convincing, and as lyceum orator polished and eru dite.
