THE EUGENE C!TY GUARD. Onf Public Rtbuoli. EUKNBCITIT.OUKUON. MATUK1JAY. JUXK CI, 1679. OBSERVATIONS OK THE COUNTY SCfEKINTESD' ENT OF SCHOOLS. Tbe Tildcn Iniomr-Tax Suit. Tim Albany Arym holds up to pul lie censure tho base ooml net ol Hi Government oftioiai wh are oinlea orin; to cast odiiiin on the action o Mr. TilJeii in conncciior. with the in conic-tax prosecution, ami remark that lie iit one of about 10,000 cii y.ens of New York City who let th revenue assessor compute his tax from iiie I ooka and who draw a check tor the umoiiiii. About 1,000,000 peopl in the United Stales paid thi-ir tax in the name way. Mr. Tilden'ii was tl only one svlt'Cted fur a lest cuse, nn his wan in"lid out because be wax elected .'resident of I ho Unite Slates, a fraudulent Administration winning to destroy bin character, nfler he bad been cheated out of tli office. Mr. Tildcn ban, for month tried U force the Federal uttorney " to a trial of hi case, in vain. It it just as certain, when that trial slul come, that Mr. TiMen will bu vind cated, as it is thm next Christmas will come on the 2olb of ppceniber The Federal attorneys who disgraced themselves bv luiuirin jj this trial bav been busying themselves by runnir away from it. The people of the United Slates pretty well uuderntar the meanness of the suit against Mr Tildcn, and know it U a jwl of the policy of the fraudulent AdininiNira tion to war on bis chunkier us lonjr. as bis body is above ground, and on his memory ulterward, in order qualify the died of ibe crime ngainsi elective well government certified to tbe observation of the world bv th existence of the Uepublican party, A Comparison of Wcullh. It has been a popular belief thai tiie United Kingdom of Great JJrit in was the wealthiest Tower on earth but comparative estimates have late ly been made by Kii;IihIi aud French papers, which fO lo prove that the 1 tldr nation takes the lead of the lormer in this respect. Quoting Irom these we find the estimate; of the value of private propeiity, real and personal in Franco $13,1 10,003,000, mid of public properly, including highways, the navy, palaces and the public buildings, rt,000,0o0,000; making a total of (4(1,110 GoO.OOO. The estimate of the same values for Filmland, Scotland ami Ireland is t2,r00,000,OW. In the EuglUh rxti mate tho highways are not included while in France they are valued ul $1, 2",000,000. The compinison whnws values to the amount of about 12,000, 000,000 nioru in France than the United Kingdom. The real property in France greatly exemd that in Englaud, while in the lal'.er the per sonal property largely prevails over that in France. The ineieasu ol wealth in Franco during the luxt ten yeuu has been 7,500,00o,0()0, or nt the rate of 75o-;000,0(K) a year. At this rats ol increase the German in demnity of tl,000,000,OCO, enormoux as it was regarded, wan overcome by the savings of sixteenth months. The school in district No 6 under Mr Mr V C Taylor has so attendance of 40 pu pils of sn enrollment of 57; this i the hrg est enrollment end the best attendance in this district for a number of years. I visit et this district several times in 1875 and 187G and find it in a good deal better con dition now than thru. In district No 7 Mr. J L Linsley is teach ing a very good school with an overageatten danceof..; tat I find the young ladies of tiiis district i.avs rejected all mathematical studies from their curricullum. This should not he be the case as sll should possess at least the rudiments of a business education. Miss Elsie Hule a student of the State University is conducting the school in dist rict Xo 52. I found every thing in neat condition. The black board needs a coat of paint badly. In its present condition it is almost entirely useless. Miss Hale has 17 in attendance of an enrolhnont of 19: Miss Hale has had but little trouble. The school in District No 12 has an aver eragc of 25 ami an enrollment of M snd is taught ty Miss Nellie Stevens of the Mate University- This the first term that gmmmer bus been tanght in this district for several years. Mr. (J. H. Hale, a state university student, is teaching a school in the vicinity of Irviug hehadsomo trouble soon after the com. niencemeut of the school rut he promixtly settled it and was nobly sustained by the directors. If more of tho school officers would land their influence in the snnio direc tion Ve would have leas insulmrdination in onr schools. This district snd also several other have built good substantial houses within the past year. District No 25 a small district east of Sprinfield reporting 21 pupils has an average attendnnco of 18 in their school and doing Hood work, under the supervision of Mr. II T. Hristow. The citizens have planted the school ground in maple trees which will shortly make a fine shady place. The clork of district No. 19 reports 83 person of school nge, and the record of tho teacher, an enrollment of over 50 with an average attendance of only 15 to 17. One teachor hns beon discharged for being too slack in government, and fault is found with the present incumbent for being too strict. In consequence of the irregularity in Attend ance, the schools in this district have not been what they should have been, the best average shown by the register for nny term luring the p.ist thres years is about fifty-five or sixty per cent., of the enrollment; another ditliculty experienced by teachers is to get the pupils to pursue the requisite number of studies or enough to keep them out of mis chief uud until these dillicnltics are over come no school will amount to much. What it needed is tho hearty co-operation with the teacher, of both district officers anil par ents, then we will sco a change for thu bet- MIRKIED. In Eugene City, June 18, 1879, by Htv. E. P. Mr I .lames Gcarhnrt in district No. 22 las an average of 21 to 23 pupils with good irder and good honest work, and the pupils are muking fine progress. This district has isd no school tho past two years on account f sickness amongst tho children which al most broke them up. Miss Cora Owsley is giving very good sat- faction as teacher in district No. 78. Her school is small, only 15 in attendance. The Spetcor creek divides this district and the raius during tho Spring have made it some- hat troublesome to the pupils who live on tho south side of said stream. It. 0. Cai.unon Co.
