We clip the following from the Sunday Welcome, of Portland, of December 15th: An excellent .oil painting of Castle Rock, with just the proper coloring of sky and water, and the ad jacent country, with a couple of beautiful deer in the foreground, has been executed by Master Ed. Espey, a boy of 18 years of age, son of Mr Espey. The picture is about 2x3 feet, aud is surprisingly good, more especially, considering the lad's age and tho (act that he has never in his life taken a les a in painting other than coloring his father's carriages. It is a matter of very great wonder that a boy without training .could have naiuted so fine a landscape. He is by nature an artist, and with proper teach .wg will be au honor to the State. A boy with his talent should not be confined to were manual labor. Improvements. We take tho following from the East Oreonian, published at Pen dleton: Prof. Arnold is one among the en terprising; he lias bnilt two winter cellars which may be used in the spring for the pro tection of the better sex during ths expected npltasntness. One on his lot opposite the High School and one back of his residence in Arnold's addition to Pendleton. The Holidays. By order of the faculty the college stu dents assembled in the auditorium last Tues day afternoon. This waa the first time they bad met together in obedience to a sum mons, and speculation was rife as regards the objoct of the call. The members of the faculty each made remarks mi the general conduct of the students' behavior in and out of the University, etc There was cue thing, however, that they had decided on, and in future it should be enforced to the very letter, that "No student, who attends the State University, shall frequent saloons or houses of similar character.
