THE EUGENE CITY GUARD EU(CNKCnT. OREGON. SATimUAY. SKIT. UL, lfc7. BUSINESS.-Matters of a personal character charged for at regular adver tising rates, to be paid Invariably In ad vance. THE SE.MT0R. Last Tuesday at noon tl)o Legisl ture, io accordance with t!n require went of the Constitution, procmlm! to ballot for linked States Senator James II. Slater, of Union county was elected on tlio first ballot. Wu presume that "Eastern Oregon," the bub and running gnats of tlio Pacific Coast, is supremely happy, except JucComas and Shop. Well, it some consolation to know that their noses aro knocked out of joint, and . . consequently ire are happy too, al though we never hankered after Sla tcr since ho and OWeara planned to defeat the Democratic ticket in 1858, THE l.N'DU.V SITUATION. Gen. Howard has for soino weeks been collecting bauds of surrender ing Indians at MdJermitt, says the Oreyonitin, and tho whole of tbrm numbering in the aggregate nearly ono thousand, aro now being trans ferred to Camp Harney. They are . held as prisoners of war to await tlio pleasuro of tho government. It should be almost unnucrHH.'iry to say that theso Indians ought by all means be trrnsfurred to some distant locality. Tho country is now clear ed of all bands of I'iule which have been engaged in hostilities. Uetnove these Indians, now prisoners, and the whole of southeastern Oregon and Iho adjacent parts of Nevada and Idaho will forever remain undid- turbed. The Malheur reservation should bo given up. If tho Indians heretofore belonging to that reserva tion be sent back, nothing can keep them there;- they will start oil' again on a raiding expedition whenever they fuel disposed, and there will bo a repetition of tho scones of past uminur throughout all the surround ing country. It is absolutely neoos sary for safety that thsy be removot to soruo distant place as the Modoca wore; and uow that the whole ol them are prisonorsu tho job will bj an easy ono and should be dmeat ouoo. We are advised that Gen Howard lias recommended that they bo taken to the Indian territory or some other distant locality, and it may be hoped that his recommend a tion will havo weight M'illi tho au thoriliosat Washington, it should be seconded by our representatives in congress. Wo cull attention to the desirability of such thorough action as will BNsure tho country that wo havo had the last of this trouble. RII'ICES OF THE FLAXES. The principal work being done by ' fanners in many localities just at present, u lighting lire. Imports como to us that much damage has been done and considerable stock dostroyod. There is a big lire ragin in the vicinity of tho Willaminn, in Yamhill, uud it is supposed that u great many sheep havo been burned thereby. We uro informed that M. Langloy, living in thai vicinity, had band of l,:i()0 sheep, and out ol that number ho can only find i2o head, and it is supposed that tho re mainder have perished by the flames. Another man iu. tho same neighbor hood had a baud of 7.M) and lii can only find fij head. General Howard returned to Walla Walls, says the Statesman, Monday last, from hia visit to Moses. Ha reported a satisfactory interview with the great Indian chief, and ays that if the president approves his act in setting aside a reservation for Mixes and hii pcoplo, no danger iu the future need bo ap prehended from that quarter. In the oourso of his speech Moses stated that ho requested land of the government, and the Luid lie would like, and if given bim and his people he would remain there forever. lie was always a friend to the whites, but be hail been hadly niigrcprc4untcd hy hisoncmies. It would add to his strength if the author dies at Washington would give bim the res crvation he now chose. All northern Indians would join him, H is thuir recognized chief tain, and his followers, as allies of the gov eminent, would prevent further trouble in his country. It was not his Indians who killed Perkins' family, but two Pulouse In dians. Homely, chief of the Umatillas, said Iim people woald join with Moses and be as before firm friends to the whites. Howard saiil bo would forward their re quest to tho great father iu Washington for reserve, and referring to tho murder of the I'erliins family, said he wanted these mur- Icrers given m. He called on .Motes and his men, the L'matillas and all others, to help nun me murderers ana deliver tliem to jus tiet). They must he punished for tho crime Tho council passed oil' harmoniously, and the Indiuns appeared well satisfied with the result. I hey renewed assurances of friend shin. Persons who are familiar with the country included within the above-described bouu- laries, inform us that there is very little land suitable for cultivation, but that it is tho best grazing district on that side of tho rivor. (Jen. Howard informs us that the settlers within the hunts number live, all told, and that their rights can bo extinguished for a trilling sum. It is highly desirable to havo tho Indian dilliculty adjusted, but wo doubt whether our peoolu will favor the setting Tw" V '"p s nu or- dinary New Kngland state for tho exclusive use of the Indians. If Washington is over to become a state, it is necessary to keep these lands open for settlement, and any ar rangement by which settlers are excluded must of necessity retard tho growth and de velopment of tho country. Fortt Firei. Capt. Love of the Steamboat Calliope gives the following particulars of a terrible fire which is now raging in timber on the north side of the Colombia river: Tho fire is sup posed to have started from the ranches of Joseph Durgins, which is located near the foot of Cape Horn mountain. At this season of the year the whole . Jurn L,,, M tll8 country is covered with dry forn and brush like tinder. The fire is thus communicated to tho smallest under brush and in a short time tho whole woods are in flames. The fire started some time during Mon day, and up to yesterday morning had trav eled a dutancu of eight miles, leaving broad track of ruin behind. Tho fire was first seen at Parker's lauding, on tho Col umbia, Monday evening. Opposite that point the tires was about three miles wide, For that distance the woods was a mass of flames. The residence at Parker's Landing were fvarful that the fire would scoop them in and all of ahem sat up during Monday night and watched. The steamer Calliope, which was lying their, kept up steam most of the uight so a-t io oe in rcaiuuess in cac oi uu emergen cy. However the lire did not rejieh tloif. iil.-tee. although it como within 100 yards of where llie steamer were moored. The places of Peter .Stioo and Wm. The lire, it was said, was cwmiiitftlown tho Wash- ougai river, nurning everything m its course, ami that the people had assembled iu num bers to tight it back, and if possible, save the new county midge across that stream, Heavy tires are rcimrteil to be rairiii" iu the vicinity of Fisher's fjinding, and tho roads leading to that lsirt are lilockaded. Tho Jli'ts has been in the habit of indulyin in wholesale villiflealion of everybody outside of tho Custom Ilousoiing, hence tho origin of the piarrel. burned, (.'apt. Love says that when ho left Parker's lauding Tuesday morning the place was sur rounded and that farmers were not able to reach the river. At present it is possible to determine the Iiihs sustained, but it is sale to say that it must ngregate a large sum. The wind blow ing a strong gale, tho lire travels with great itpidity. Wlieu tlio Calliope kit tho land ing Tuesday, tho lire was runing rapidity toward Mill Plain, and it was greatly feared that it would reach that section. ' Should it reach there the destruction of property would bo great, Everything is dry mid there are a great many stubble fields and the fire would sweep tho country like a fiury whirlwind. The people in that suction aro alarmed at the threatening danger and well they may be, for there is no telling whero the firo will stop.
