McGrath in Linn, and Claude Branton in Lane, have both been promptly convicted of murder in the first degree. The former for killing a young man by the name of Turner, near Harrisburg, who was suspected by McGrath of being on intimate terms with his, McGrath' wife. Prompt, intelligent and vigorous prosecution on the part ot tht: state has marked both of these trials, and it is to be hoped the in auguration of a new era in erimi nal jurisprudence in the state. Thousands of dollars have been saved to the taxpayers ot the two counties by the efficient methods displayed by the courts, and will help to remove the stigma of form er practices in such eases. Of the several kindly tokens of reme nbrauce I received at Camp Merritt, none co;i;erred more lasting pleasure than a nuinber of dish-towels sent down by Corvallis ladies. Tho' from constani use they a re no longer a thing of beauty, they are a joy forever, and the envy of those who possess no such conven iences. I wrote that we are having a pleasant voyage, and we are, but every Eden has a serpent and the snake on the Senator is the growler the chronic complainer. I cannot call him a pessimist for that animal is supposed to be a thinking growler, whereas our grumblers do not spice their complainine with a pinch of reasonine. If there is anything wrong, of course the sensible course is to inform the offieers who can reach it, but our Miser ables sit on deck and whine. And I suppose they will whine all the way over and then write whiningly home. It is not to be expected that we will have all the comforts of home, nor the fare of the officers who pay $40 a month for their meals. Major Goodale, our command ing officer, ordered daily drills, but there was not deck room and "setting up" exercises only are indulged in. One Oregon lad, Claud Haw kins, is quarantined ;.n the hos pital part of the boat. He has the mumps, in fact he had them before he came on board, but would not report to the doctor because he did not want to miss the trip with his own detach ment. He was not seasick and will be out by the time we reach Honolulu. Another boy named Cain, came on board with the measles but was discovered be fore the Senator left the dock, and he was sent to the Presidio hospital. There are four surgeon-, on board, several hospital stewards' and nurses and a chapfain. We have sighted one whale and see flying fish quite often.
