Retirement of the bond-breeding, credit-threatening demand notes of our government. The payment of the national debt in the best money that wis dom and experience can devise. A factionless, clean, effective republican party. WHY? Why should any sensible citi zen of the Willamette valley, whatever his polities, desire to retire Mr. Tongue as congress man from this district? Even the most arde.it free silver advo cates must admit that under the present conditions the gold stand ard is at least endurable and that the defeat of Mr. Tongue will not change the financial policy of the United States. On the other hand Mr. Tongue's loyalty to our material local in terests, and his ability cannot be questioned. Were those petitions you signed urging the improving ot Yaquina harbor, honest ex pressions of your desires hi that direction? Were those congrat ulations when the happy result of Mr. Tongue's labors with the war department was made known, genuine? Or are you going to inform the war depart ment and congress by your vote that you have no real interest in Yaquina bay? It is smali wonder that the present delegation in congress had to work so desperately to re ceive favorable action from the war department in behalf of the j Mr. Corbett wishes to be Uni Yaquina improvements. When the Gazkttk has had occasion to refer to the Ore- - eoman's political transgressions (references which the Portland y, , paper always answers by confes sion or evasion) a tribute to the Oregonian as a newspaper, intro duced the criticism. It was sup posed that the Oregonian's news .rvice was the best obtainable. t is now painfully apparent that ye have been worshiping false gods. It has been demonstrated that the Oregonian's conserva tism is nothing but lack of en- ness. The Oregouian has preached its own superiority so long that belief in that paper's infallibility has become one of the supersti tions of the average web-footer. Nothing short of a war would shake that superstition but a war is doing it. When the Tribune published an account of the Maine disas ter one day ahead of the Oregon iau, we shook our heads and muttered "'Tisn't so, or the Oregouian would have had it." When the Tribune one morning told us of the DsLome letter, we cried "fake," because it was not in the Oregoniau that day. But our confidence was shaken. Then last Sunday when the Trib une told ot Dewey's splendid victory over the Spaniards at the Phillipines with not a word in the Oregoniau, and the truthful ness of tho account was estab lished, a humiliating conscious ness of our years of gullibility interfered with our patriotic en thusiasm. The "we" used here is not an editorial wc, but a public pro noun. The disgust at the Ore gonian's tardiness is general. Most of the news it' gives was stale in San Francisco when it went to press. Corvallis people get important news in the Call and Examiner as quickly as from the Portland Oregonian. Dewev's guns have shattered the newspaper superstition 01 countless Oregonians. Wc have been a day behind the-rest of the world and are just finding it out. An idol has been overthrown. A big bluff has been uncovered and reader whispers to reader "what fools we mortals be. And the farmer is satis tied now when he takes his gold dollars to lay in his supplies, and it will be found in the coming election that lie is willing to let well enough alone, according to the injunction of Bryan at Dover, D '1 , September 21, 1896, in which he said: ' If times are good, then there is no reason why w - should make any change in legislation. If our present condition is satis factory, then we ought to leave il alone and not make any change."' Times are now good, very good, and we shall let the present con dilion essentially alone. R. J. Nichols. MONROE ITEMS. School picnic May 28th. Don't forget Saturday, the 28th. Mrs. Gay is confined to the house with typhoid fever. A. Wilhelm and party have re turned from a trip lo Portland. There is to be a picnic at the Bellfounlain camp grounds Sat urday May 7th (tomorrow) and on the same date, in the evening, a basket social is to be given at the Brown school house, the proceeds from which will be used in pur chasing a flag to be used at the school house. Herickendorff brothers, of Philo math, drove a team belonging to their stepfather, into the watering place in Long Tom near Monroe, and in seme manner turned the team so that it went over a 10 foot juinpofl". TIig team was buried next day and their picture enlarging outfit lost, as also $10 in cash. This happened Friday. A crowd of patriotic men and women assembled in Monroe Sat urday, and proceeded to raise a 12x25 foot flag. Appropriate music, speeches, etc., were ren dered. Several Corvallis people were on hand and a general good time was indulged in by all pres ent. The emblem of justice and liberty now floats from a hundred foot pole. There are still some people in Oregon who sympathize with Spain in Jier brutal and semi barbarous methods of warfare and denounce our government in her efforts to secure to the suffering people of Cuba liberty and justice. Such men or women should be made an example ol, and all such traitors to their country should receive the deserts due such be ings. X. Y. Z. The Surprise of All.
