. 1 Issued Every Friday HornuMr by " The Gazette Publishing Oo. CORVALLIS, OREGON. Nov. 19, 1897. CASUAL REMARKS. ' ' ' Last winter Mr." Scott, editor of the Oregonian, visited Salem. The legislators elect were gather ed there, and rn-the headquarters provided by Jonathan Bourne, the populists congregated. Here they discussed choice viands and wines, and incidentally, the initi ative and referendum. Jonathan is jovial, a pleasant entertainer, azd to many of the followers of Marv Ellen Lease, the temple of Bourne seemed like' a glimpse of Lea ven. ..- , . ;:- TJ this resort' of Bachans, Venus and populism, Mr. Scott repaired. He had a piece to speak and he spoke it. He said he had denounced populists and populism through his paper, but he had recently discovered that he was in error. He said he now came before them to make proper apology and to - promise that henceforth the Oregonian would refrain from deeply damning populism and lashing populists. The assembled populists applaud ed, loudly, and tire lion and the lamblike played together. This is perhaps not news to all the readers of this paper. It is simplv retold as a reminder to the few good . republicans who .swear by the Oregonian, that they are being gradually. led into the populist camp.. Have you noticed an editorial in the Ore gonian this year criticising Ore gon populists? Has not it em tied its vials of wrath on the heads of republicans only? The Oregonian is . opposed by " the republican newspapers of the state and endorsed by the popu lists journals. The Herald in Linn couuty, Statesman in Mar ion county, Enterprise in Clack amas, Plaindealer in Douglas, Tidings in Jackson, West Side and Observer in Polk, Trans cript in Yamhill, Hatchet and Independent in Washington, MLt in -Columbia, Gazette in Morrow, Republican in Umatilla, Republican in Baker the list is too long to be fully enumerated. All these, stalwart republican papers, . consider the Oregonian an enemy to republicanism and a friend to populism. It is hard ly pertinent here, but it might be- welf to add that some-of these papers, supported Senator Mitch ell and some opposed hini. Onthe .other hand the popu llst organs are loudly praising Mr. Scott and the Oregonap. They know their friends. - Tus paper-has? -'always Sup ported the republican party. The Gazette does not believe"! n" 'fu sion J or trading. r' The ."republi can principles are" not of the swapping kind. But this paper doesjiot believe in populist re publicans as urged by the Ore gonifii. This paper supported Senator Mitchell' for, re election, believing him to be. a; valuable man for the state, but 'we do not belieye- in tying the party to Mr. Mitchell -nor to any man or fac tion. "The republican party stands for. honest money and the chance to earn it," and that party is good enough for any pa triotic citizen. REPUBLICAN PRESS COMMENT. The Oregonian alwajs hunls ii some kind of. an excuse lor ils mi fairn(t. ' Only a lew tlaj's ago i declared that n statement from Mr. Ellin 'to. the. -"effect that he opposed live -coinage of .silver would in deed be welcome, but now that4i IMS oetii mane me "only" paper declines to accept it.wllieh, how ever, makes t he little diffeivnc only, as said betore, to show that paper's unfair methods. ll Mr JMlis should have I he declaration' engraved upon the stone in iho aichwaj' of the entrance to 1 lie Oregonian building" where Harvey Scott could look at it each time he passed in and out, ho would el ill rail at ths man who made the statement for having done so. Mr. Ellis does not belong to Abe class of men who take their cud from the Oregonian and lor that reason it opposes him. St. Helens Mist The country press over the state are warming the" jacket, of the big daily down in Portland prettv lively these days. Tlx.- Oregonian is being condemn id "bv its own words, which show it i bra the bitrest bug of all the siraddlers. Hc ppnier Gazette. aunaayg urcgoman eontains a dispatch from the f aper's corres pondent in Baker Citr stating that Congressman Ellis had told the correspondent that if an at tempt should be made in congress to pass a bin for free coinage of silver in the United States alone, In would most decidedly vote against it. The Oregonian "dis credits its own reporter and says, "Mr.EIIis should put this statement in a public address so it may- be understood that there is no mis take about it.' And yet, when Senator Mitchell put in a public address his indorsement of the St. Louis platform, it insisted upon his making confession of faith in its colums. The big jour-, 11 al says there is no truth in "ver min, and then disbelieve Use. The Dalles ChrQiiicJe. '" - - llie uregonian remarks "var remarks ious democratic papers, and cer tain populist journals also, are advocating 'fusion'-,of; all the dif ferent silver factions- for the com ing election" in this stale. Well, U'Ren has been roaming around the state under pay of . t he Cor bett-Seott combine giving instruc tions to popalist papers, as to what it is proper to advocate, and U'Ren's work is what the Oregon ian has just "discovered." " Ol course what is meant is "fusion" on the money question. There will be no fusion on this question in the next campaign, but there will be "fusion." Not with the breed ef cats that "fused" in the last legislature. It will be a lu tion of the people against anarch ists, for when men are elected to office and refuse to take "the oath and do their duty ?s prescribed by law they are anarchists pure and simple. All the political parties in the state may. assemble and put up straight tickets, but the people will fuse on one, and that will be the one that is not indorsed or put up by the men wfco held up the last legislature. Astoria Ev ening News. ALGER THE ARBITER. A territory large as the state of New York, rich in fertile soil, immense timber belts and valu able mines, and peopled with in dustrious and intelligent citizens, will be benefitted and greatly benefitted by the further im provemeut of Yaquina. The Willamette Valley alone, is an empire that the national govern ment should cheerfully recognize as entitled to its wealth and im portance to government aid in the building up of its trade with the world. Congress has shown its ap preciation of the needs of this territory by authorizing the sec retary of war to continue the improvements of Yaquina har bor at a cost not to exceed one million dollars. The matter is now in the hands of Secretary Alger, and it is in his power to give the people of the Willamette Valley a competing line to the Southern Pacific rail road, or to annul the act of con gress by refusing to carry out its provisions, and thus depriving the Valley and Eastern Oregon of a direct waterway route to the markets of the world. A , million dollars is a large sum, but vastly larger are the sums; that will be saved to the farmers and business men of ,the great territory interested in the further improvement of the har bor at Yaquina.
