It is said that a man started to walk from Albany to Corvallis Wednesday and has not been seen since, and that search is being made for uini. He has a brother-in-law at the Corvallis mills. "A fighter has more business in a fight than a boxer" is said to be the lesson of the Corbett Fitzsim mons passage. It is also said that the contrary lesson is taught by the Smith-Green contest. Dr. Thompson, at the Presby terian church, last Sunday morn ing, took '"Cuba"1 for his subject and discoursed feelingly and elo quently concerning the Spanish atrocities. ' . Chas. Mummery and Ben Fel ger had an altercation Tuesday night and Felger paid $10 into the city treasury as a result. ' Mum mery-plead not guilty and his case is set for tomorrow. The O. A. C. boys have recently organized a baseball nine and will probably enter in the inter collegiate games. ' Town baseball iststare also organizing and .. we may expect a local revival of the national game. Dick Eiger brought up a San wet owl, which is the smallest of the owl tribe, . This faded rapidly away after the 12th round and when Fitz knocked Corbett. out in the 1,4th, the Kangaroo 'admirers let themselves loose. The bets on the fight were mostly small. CLUBS FOX KOIDA, Clubs arc rarely organized for any deeper purpose than to give pleasure to their members.'"- .Th road dubs, bow- ever, that are fast growing in popularity make social enjoyment an incident. They are organized for the purpose of improving the highways, benefitting the farmers and business men and enriching the state, for good roads are a form f wealth. The growing army of wheel men, too, can appreciate any improve ment over the average country road. Portland has a strong and prosperous road club, handsomely situated in roomy quarters and counting among its mem bers the leading commercial and profes sional men of Oregon. Its social fea tures are admirable, and its efforts on be half of good roads, effective. Several gentlemen are interested in organizing a branch- club in corvallis and they should receive the hearty co operation of all our citizens. A meeting was held two weeks ago, largely at the instigation of Prof. Lake, and a . tempo rary organization effected. -Last Satur day those interested met again and dis cussed methods. They decided to place the entrance fee, for the present, at $1 and leave the matter of dues to be acted upon later. ; There was some unit of purchasing the present bowling alley for club quarters, but this question was also postponed. - Mr. J. C. Mayo, the new club's tempo rary secretary, received a letter from the Portland club, in forming .him that any member of the Corvallis club would be enttiled . to all v the priv ileges of ll:e Ore&on Road Club At Port- Ian d without extra cost.-. It would add much to the strength of the good roads movement throughout the state if you acd others would orga nize branches of the Oregon Road Club, calling yours, for example, O. R. C, No. 3, &c There's nothing like organization and organized effort. If you organize O. R. C, No. 2, others will fall in line and before the year closes, the' good roads movement would have power and force behind it to insure its success over all obstacles. Out of a number of snch branches, it has been my idea to orga nize the 'National League for Good Roads' in Oregon. - We should then be in a position to command the attention and considera tion, as well as support and co-opera tion, of the public authorities, state, county and municipal, and be enabled thereby to get anything we ask for with in the bounds of reason.
