The Albany will soon go into service again. Her renovation has made her a new boat. Geo. Bowers is mourning. Mrs. Bowers is visiting friends in Cal ifornia and will remain several weeks. , The solemn tones of the town clock have not been heard since Monday. Tempus, however, still fugits. Miss Etta Campbell, who was attacked with lagripde, while act ing as nurse at LaGrande, has re turned home to recuperate. Alex. Campbell commences life as a farmer next week, having purchased the J. G. Mohr place, in Linn county, opposite Corvallis. Of the $060. bonus required to build and operate a creamery here, Wm. Hartless has raised all but $75. v : The State Grange meets at Cor vallis May 25th. Delegates are being appointed in the several counties. Those interested are arranging to receive bulletins from the Cor-bett-Fitzsimmons fight on the 17th 01 Ireland. 1 Dr. M. M. Davis is in Portland, attending to his duties as a mem ber of the state board of pharma- Spencer don't ride a wheel, bowl, play ball or wear bloomers, but he shaves and cuts hair, and these things he does well. Oregon's attorney general, C. M. Idleman, is. in-the city. He gives an address (his evening be fore the teachers7 institute. T. W. Curry leaves this week for Marsbfield, Coos county, to ac cept a position in a large saw mill. ; . Corvallis has 12 lawyers and only four practicing physicians. This means there is more distress f mind here than of body. Mrs. S- A. Hemphill returned Wednesday from Denver, where she has been visiting since No vember. Mack is still in that city and doing finely. The Granger school closed Wednesday with appropriate ex ercises. - Miss Abbie Wright, has had charge of the school and gave good satisfaction. . ' The Blodgett school closed Friday, but a new terra will be gin in April. Miss Anna Denman, the present teacher, has been re tained. Assignee Davis will sell at auc tion, on Wednesday, April 7th, the real estate, buildings, plant and stock of the Coast Carriage & Wagon Company. Geo. R. McKenzie, partner of John D. Daly, passed through Corvallis Tuesday, eqroute for To ledo, where he will expert the ac counts of Lincoln county officials. Johnson, of the Gazette, mash ed his thumb in a paper cutter Tuesday. His denunciation of the cutter shamed the professor of foreign languages. - A. L. Clarke, of Alsea, known throughout Benton county as John Henry, will be a married man af ter next Sunday. County Treasurer Buchanan has issued another call for warrants. This will redeem 48 warrants and disburse $5,174. These calls de light the eye of every taxpayer. The Rev. A. L. Black, from Mc- Minnville College, will lecture on ''Young People's Work, at the Baptist church on Friday evening at 7:30. All are cordially invited. Regular meeting of "the Odd Fellows' Cemetery Association, Wednesday, March 17th, at 3 p. m., at I. O. O. F. hall. Pauline Kline, Sec. Senator Mitchell is prominent ly mentioned as successor of J udge McKenna, of California, who re signed . as United Stales circuit judge to become a member of Mc Kinley's cabinet. They are corresponding withoffi cers at San Francisco and hope to be marines within a lew months. - " ' The Amicitia Society of the Agricultural College entertained the pablic Saturday- evening with fa literary program. Robert Gold- en's recitation was the principal feature. Ed Zeis lias "sold out his con fee tionery store and whist parlors to Hazelton & Brotherton, two young men from Scio. Ed expects to leave for Redding, Cal., in about two weeks. Mrs. Frank Conover and son left for Salem Wednesday to join Frank, who has a job printing of fice at the capital city. They will make that place their future home. John Myers, formerly of Ore gon City, and who was the dem ocratic candidate for congress man against Binger Hermann several years ago, has been ap pointed chief of police of Port land by Pennoyer. J. H. Harris is moving his stock into his new' quarters next door to the First National bank today. After today he will be ready to meet all his old and new customers and show them a fine stock of goods. Tomorrow the fire department elects chief engineer and assis tant. According to custom,- on ly one company has nominated candidates, so Taylor Porter for chief, and F. P. Sheasgreen for assistant, the choice of Young America, will be elected. Mrs. James Cauthorn and Johnson Porter, sister and neph ew of Mrs. I. N. Dolph went to Portland yesterday to attend the fnneraf bf fhe 'exsenator. Roy Raber will officiate as police judge in the absence of Mr. Por ter. - The boys' band gives a dance at Creighton's hall Friday evening, March 19th. The proceeds will be used in buying needed riHisic. Tickets will be placed at 50 cents; ladies free. Only respectable peo ple are invited and no others will be admitted. .'.". President Hawley, of Willam ette University, addressed a very large audience at the Q. A, C. as sembly hall last Friday evening. His subjsct was "Cuba Libre," which he handled in a scholarly and interesting manner. The lec ture was enthusiastically cheered. Mrs. E. Skiptou, who lives a few miles south of Philomath, fell last Saturday morning in such a manner as to fracture her right forearm and cause a dislocation of her wrist. Dr. Pernot reduced the-; fracture and the patient is getting on nicely. Alex Rennie, Nolan & Calla han's -popular salesman, left for Yaquina City to take charge of O'Brien's clothing business dur ing the absence of Terry O'Brien on a visit to his father, who is undergoing medical treatment at San Francisco. Mr. Rennie is ex pected home next week. Prof. Shaw visited Hillsboro (his week to discuss the adapta bilitv of Willamette Valley soils for sugar beet raising with the cit izens of that town, who are think ing of buildiug a sugar beet fac tory. Later he was interviewed by the Portland Board of Trade on the mme subject. County Clerk Watters and. the county court have settled their differences and come to an arnica ble adjustment of the salary mat ter. concessions nave been made on both sides. The law suit which has been pending against the court, for salary has been dismissed and the court has agreed to allow $2 per day for deputy- hire for each day the county or circuit 'courts are, in session and $2 per dav for each clerk employed in making up the tax rolls. Monday night the council declared his $500 liquor bond for feited, because he violated its con ditions in selling liquor to minors. WOHtEY. Sunday tin remains of Mrs. T. P" Woriey were laid to rest in the Odd Fel lows' cemetery. The funeral services, held at the family residence, were well attended by old friends and neighbors and were conducted by Rev. E. J. ThompsoH. The deceased was a sister of B. T. Ti ginia. some years later, tne lamny moved to Mississippi, where Miss Taylor was married in 1S49 to Mr.T. P. Woriey. Twenty years later, the couple came west, spending a few months in California, and then coming to Oregon, settling near Sa lem. In 1874, they moved to Bentoa county and for a number ef years lived a few miles north of Corvallis, when Mr. Woriey died in 1888. The immediate relatives who survive the deceased are a sister, Miss Elizabeth Taylor, and a brother, B. T. Taylorhoth of this city.
