Guy Laws is ready to lecture
before business colleges. He says
he sold 66 head of good sheep for
$20 recently, taking the purchasers
note and still saved money.
Adolph Peterson is renovating
the store next door to the 1st na
tional bank, for the use of J. H.
Harris who expects to occupy it
'about the 15th of this month.
Ira and Fred Nelson, formerly
in business here, are now located
at Lewiston, Idaho. Mrs. Fred
Nelson is at present visiting her
parents. Mr. and MrsMartin, near
Monroe. "
Already candidates for the
various city officers are feeling
the public pulse. There is some
talk of holding party conventions
but probably the nomination will
be made in the good old way.
Dick Kiger has lost 70 head of
sheep on the Humphrey place
from moss, dogs and coyotes.
The moss kill pasture and the
sheep starve. Dick killed three
trespassing cannines this week.
Tonight President Hawley, of
Willamette university, lectures at
the college chapel on the subject
"Cuba Libre." Mr. Hawley is a
very interesting speaker. The lec
ture is free and everybody is in
vited. Ed Barchard, a stalwart young
Englishman of Rossi and, B. G.,
who has just returned from a visit
to England, passed through Cor
vallis, Mouday, to visit his brother,
Jerry Barchar I, who resides at
Summit.

Society of the college will give a
literary entertainment at the cha
pel. No admission will be charg
ed. An attractive program has
been arranged, including essays,
debates, recitations, music and a
farce. All are invited
Geo. Taylor has offered to build
and operate a creamery, provided
the citizens of Corvallis will give
him a bonus of $500, and guaran
tee to furnish him the milk of 200
cows. Wm. Hartless has under
taken to raise the subsidy and so
far has succeeded ie securing $250.
The Evangelical church will be
gin a protracted meeting Sunday
evening. Preaching every even
ing at 7:30 during next week. Rev.
N. Shupp, of Portland, presiding
elder of Oregon, will be here and
preach every evening. Everybody

Hon. James Rir.ehart, a promi
nent, capitalist of Union county,
and his wile, are vis-itin 1 heir old
time friend. Prof. Horner, this
week. Mr. Rinehart is -an uncle
of Arthur Rinehart, who attended
he O. A. C. a few years ago. He
savs that Arthur is practicing law
at" Vale. .
J. J. Sturgill, an ex-O. A. C.
student, is under arrest in Port
land for assaulting Mr. Jennings,
a representative. Sturgill was
one of Davis' deputy sergeant-at-arms
and attempted to arrest Jen
nings and take him to Salem.
Sturgill was secretary of the
bimetallic league.
W. J. Fitzpatrick, with his wife
and little son, will ieave in April
for the "old country." His old
home is near Liverpool, and his
father and mo' her, who were out
here last summer, still reside there.
Mr. Fitzpatrick has been in Amerr
ica over ten years. He will re
main in England until after Christ
mas. The Ladies Aid Society of the
Presbyterian church held their an
nual meeting on Wednesdaj' after
noon and elected the following
officers for the ensuing year: Pres
ident, Mrs. J. H. Simpson; vice
presidents, Mrs. P. Avery and Mrs.
W. A. Wells; secretary, Mrs. J.
H. Harris; treasurer, Mrs. M. M.
Davis.
All of the members and persons
interested in the Crystal Lake
Cemetery Association are request
ed to be present during the regular
meeting Saturday, March 6th, at
2:30 p. in., at the residence of
Judge Burnett. Election of offi
cers and other important business
is to be transacted. F. A. Helm,
secretary.
During
Sunday and Mouday
Corvallisites were wondering why
it was that the iailhlul clock 111
the court house tower failed to
strike the hours, as it had been
wont to do. The trouble resulted
Irora a break in the iron arm that
raises the striker. This has since
been remedied and the clock now
tolls the hours as usual.

One week Irom tomorrow the
athletic entertainment at the op
era house will occur. The college
boys aie making extensive prepar
ations and will put on a clean, rich
entertaining program. There will
be lencing, boxing, club swinging,
bar work, ring exercises, so varied
and managed as not to grow mo
notonous. The opera house will
be crowded.
All the Corvallis sports are dis
cussing the coming meeting be-
tweeu Corbett and Fitzsimmous.
Both men have their admirers and
the debates over the comparative
merits of the shamrock -and Kan
garoo, otten wax warm, the Cor
bett men. having apparently the
better of the argument. So far
but little has been wagered in Cor
vallis on the event.
The Alumni of the Oregon As
ricultural College, at a special
meeting Friday evening, voted a
scholarship loan to a young lady
student. They also discussed the
matter of offering a prize lor ora
torical contestants, and-although
the proposition was temporarily
laid on the table, it was practical
ly decided to oiler a prize of $40
lor June. "
The boys band is improving
rapidly through iaithtul practice
and good instructions. As nearly
all the members are school boys,
their funds are not plentiful and
they are not averse to a little out
side aid in their musicial enter
prise. U11 the evening ot the 19th
they will give a dance at the
opera houe to raise money for
music. The boys are deserving of
patronage.
S. L. Kline received an immense
spring stock of groc l ies, dry goods
and clothing on the last steamer
from San Francisco, and during
the past few days his corps of
clerks have been busy unpackin
the large boxes and marking the
goods. Mr. Kline says he has pur
chased a larger stock this sprin
tnan usual, na indications are
favorable for a very large trade
during the coming season.

are spending the week in Southern
Oregon on an advertising tour.
Mr. Miller lectures on Industrial
Education and Professor Cordley
discusses insect and fungus pests.
The lectures are illustrated by one
hundred and fitty stereoplicon
views prepared especially by Prof.
Pernot. Ashland, Grants Pass
and Medford are the cities where
lectures were to be delivered.
; A "pig in a poke" is a hard ani
mal to manage. Lawyer E. E.
Wilson bought several notes of the
defunct Hamilton & Job bank that
Assignee Bryson deemed uncol
lectible. ' One of these notes was
signed by Lawyer M. L. Pipes and
Wilson has .sued Pipes therefor.
Zephin Job, in giving evidence be
fore Rtieree Waiter, testified that
the note had be.sn paid, although
not so marked on. the bonks. He
thought - Pipes, alter paying the
note, had led it lying on the conn
ter and it had been put b ick in
lh. bill book.
U. B. Voglu has been carefully
cultivating and watching a lew

was expecting to feast 011 rhubarb

the previous night some miscreant
had dug up the plants and carried
them off. Mr. V. is now looking
for the thief, but he can't be found.
The Herald says: '-An intercol
legiate baseball league was organ
ized. Games were scheduled to
occur on May 1st between Albany
and Corvallis, and Newberg ,and
McMiimville, the winner in the
first set to play with Eugene 011
May 15th, and the winner, ot the
second set to play with Monmouth
on the same date. The winners of
these two games will then plaj'
the final game on May 29th." The
O. A. C. boys Ray that they have
not joined the league and the game
for Corvallis is off. They will soon
go into training lor field day ath
letic events, and will have no time
for baseball.
The Water Company Case.
Corvalus, Or., March 4, '97,

The Times in last issue states
that Judge Fullerton had decided
the case of the Water Company
against the city in favor . of the
Water Company. If that state
ment is true to its fullest extent,
then it would appear that there
is nothing left for the - poor tax
ridden property -. owner - of - this
city to do but dig up $28,000 and
give it to the Water Company.
Where is to come from? How
are we to get it? Our chef .er pro
hibits the city from selling bonds
or incurring any greater indebt-
ness than $10,000, and that for
a city hall. It further prohibits
a ereater levy than 5 mills tax
for general purposes for any one
year, and 2 mills street tax.
When this pretended contract was
made, the great body of taxpay
ers thought it was so inequitable,
one sided aud unfair that they I
instituted legal proceedings to
prevent it being enforced. Now
this same contract which pro
poses to give the Water Company
at least double what their proper
ty was ever worth, is resurrected
and made the basis of a suit
against the city for a specific per
formance. The property has
never been assessed for more than
,ooo, and is not worth more
than from $12,000 to $14,000.
Why the council ever undertook
to make such a contract is one
of the thiugs that are past finding
out. Perhaps' the manipulators
of the old Job bank could tell
more abont it than anybody else..
But the Times is slightly mis
taken. Its article goes entirely
too far. The Water Company
has not got its clutches on the
throat of the tax payers yet.
"We shall see what we shall see."

A Town of Joiners.
Societies against society is the war in
Corvallis and the plural noun has the
better of the collective at present. The
Masons are here with their lodges and
chapters and the female Masons have
their chapter. The Odd Fellows are
well established and the Odd Fellowesses
have a lodge. The old soldiers maintain
a post, their wives aud daughters a corps
and their sous belong the Sons of Vcter
ens. The Workingmen's lodge has a
large membership and the Working
wouieu meet ir. a Degree of Honor." The
Macabees flourish aud the queen bees
have a hive. The Woodmen cengregate
and their wives sit in a Circle. The Ar
tisans have a growing lodge and. the
Knights of Pythias have taken a new
lease of life. Farmers keep up a Grange
aud besides there are sundry literary and
scientific societies." The ladies coffee
club and the fire companies are. semi
social organizations. The affairs natural
in a town of about 2000 people keep
these peoples spare hours occupied.
An old book quaintly says that "when
the whole system is pervaded by well

life and activity are copiously communi
cated." Which means that when the

The Election. ;
The school election last Monday de
veloped some excitement : Geo. Coote
was placed in nomination for director,
and the report quickly spread that he
was the A.- P. A. candidate. The opposi
tion concentrated their forces upon John
Simpson and there was good work on
both sides. For Clerk, W. A. Buchan
an was the anti-candidate and W. S.
Bates was supposedly advocated by the
A. P. A. The result showed that either
the A..P. P.'s have lost their grip or the
rumor of their taking a hand was only
rumor. John Simpson received 9a votes
and Coote, 40, ,For clerk, Buchanan was
elected by a vote of 10a to 40. '

Hamilton, being the most adept, received
1st prize and Dr. Bowen Lester was pre

Death of John Currier.
John Currier, son of Manly Currier, of
Willamette, who has been paralyzed since
October 22nd, 1895, the effect of a wagon
accident in Alsea valley, died Sunday
morning. ' He was buried in Oak Ridge
cemetery the following day. . :
