At the meeting of the city council on Mon day evening, the committee on fire and water made the following report in regard to the condition and facilities of the city water works: 1st. The pumps of the water company are not managed in such a way as to insure complete and adequate pro tection to the city in case of tire. We find that no engineer is kept ia charge at night. consequently in case of fire the city is left to the mercy of the flames until such time as the engineer can be called out and start the en gine, which necessarily causes much delay and loss of property. We would therefore recommend that the said water company be requested to employ a competent engineer to have charge of and operate the pumps at night, in order to avoid this delay. 2nd. There are nine hydrants in the city, as fol lows: 3 on six-iuch, 4 on four-inch, 1 on three-inch and 1 on two-inch mains. Wonld recommend that those on less than four-inch mains be immediately discontinued uuless placed on four-inch mains. Third We find that a stf am tire engine fully adequate to the needs and requirements of tbe city of Cor. vallis would cost about $2,500, and in case we cannot secure a better system would be of incalcuable value to the city. Fourth We further find that the cost of cisterns with a capacity of 20,000 gallons each will cost at the rate of about $250 per cistern. Fifth Would recommend that a committee be ap pointed to investigate the rates charged by the water company for supplying the city and report if iu their judgment such rates are reasonable. A number of bills were allowed.. Cost bills iu the case of the city of Corval lis vs. Stewart Moore, amounting to $13.50, was referred to finance committee. An electric light was ordered placed at the intersection of Monroe and 9th streets, A petition was presented asking passage of ordinance to license traveling solicitors for sale of shirts and clothing; petition placed on file. A resolution was adopted that hereafter no person is authorized to purchase anything for the city, except on special or der from the council or on requisition from the police judge, and that no requisition shall be issued by the ;olice judge for any article costing more than $10, except as oth erwise provided. (Jhiet ot police was instructed to issue requisition to chief of fire department for amount of wood needed. Chief of police also instructed to purchase wood .for city. Old city hall ordered insured tor $700 TRUE TO THEIR PROMISE.' It has been., the. mutual understanding among the members of the Marine baud of this city that they would spare no pains to properly celebrate the marriage of their first member who should be so heavenly blessed, As time rolled on suspicions pointed to sev eral of their number, but the first to actually do it was Mr. Frank Lilly, who was married to Miss Minnie Waggoner in this city hist week, and upon tbe return home from their wedding tour was greeted with a serenade; by the band. At the awakening strains of that little ditty, so appropriate to tbe oc casion, "Kock-a-bye Baby, Frank came forth with a box of fine cigars. After con gratulations the merry serenaderS departed, and as that familiar old ong as sung by. Weaver, the banjo king, in the Marine rain strels, was struck up, led by the king him' self, Frank was seen to go into tears in re. memberance of those happy bygone days, and, perhaps, of a .previous wedding sere nade in which the Marine hand participated. Frank will send in his resignation- to the Marine band, as be Will soon be instructor and director of discords of a band of his THE CARRIAGE FACTORY. The good news that the carriage factory will soon again be "on its feet" and in run ning order with a full complement of work' men is hereby . announced, all of which Is entirely due to the untiring efforts of Sup erintendent Sticker toward the end he has almost accomplished. . He returned from Portland Wednesday - where he made the necessary arrangements with creditors whereby the business will again be resumed and the familiar sound of the old. ' whistle will be music to the ears of many who have for some months been waxing fat ' in idle' ness. ' . NEW DELIVERY SERVICE. Mr. Will A. ''Why, Mr.'ofB- cer, can t the saloons be closed on Sunday? PERSONAL. B. F. Hyland is on the sick list. State SuDeridtendent McElrov was in the city Wednesday. H. Stock returned from Portland Tuesday, after a week's pleasant visit with friends and relatives. He reports a fine time. Miss Ona Hathaway has been engaged to teach the Witham school this fall. Miss Hathaway taught the spring school and is well liked. G. W. Bingham has been officiating as head drayman for several days this week during the illness of Alex. Campbell's daughter. We learn through a private letter that Miss Mabel, eldest daughter of Congressman Hermann, is attending Mt. Vernon seminary at Washington, D. C. Judge Fullerton is in the city for the pur pose of fixing the date of sale of the O. P. property, which he informs us will be made within the next two months. Hon. W. B. Sorsby is expected to return to Corvallis soon from his run down to San Francisco, and it is hoped he will have de cided to make this his permanent headquar ters. Mr. William Crees and wife were pre vented from starting on their journey as was announced in last week's Gazbttp, owing to an accident which befell the former. They started last Tuesday. Mrs. Henry Pape, although absent, is not unmindful of the comforts of her liege lord during her temporary absence and the first of the week sent him a whole box full of Jacksonville peaches. Henry is getting1 fat; but as to those peaches being the cause, we are not prepared to say. i Prof. Wm. Stock, A. B., Ph. G., a brother of our fellow-townsmen Sol. M. and E. H., was last Friday elected to the chair of phar macy in Willamette university, Portland, and will deliver twenty-four lectures during the year. He U quite well "on" to his job, and his many friends are considerably elated over his promotion. Messrs. August Fischer. ' Dave Rosobniok, the popular young cor nctisl who was recently married to Miss Essie Titman of Toledo, Lincoln - county, will arrive in Corvallis next Tuesday and has been secured as musical instructor for both the Marine and O. A. C. bands for the coming season. Mr. Rosebrook is-not only a thorough instructor in the art of music, but a rctined gentleman as well and will re ceive the hearty approval of a music loving community. RECEIVER BRYSON REPORTS. The report of Receiver Bryson has been received by the court and is quite compre hensive of the condition of affairs of the in stitution over which he at present presides. The aggregate of the 459 claims presented by creditors of the insolvent firm of Hamil ton, Job & Co. ia $223,412.25. which amount includes $5,605.03 not npon tbe lwoks of the bank when that institution closed and that were not included in the $224,348. 17 liabil ities reported by the receiver at the meet ing of creditors. The decrease of tbe lia bilities, notwithstanding the appearance of the $5,605.04 unlisted claims, is owing to tbe failure of presentation of claims amount ing to $6,540 85, by which amount the credi tors are gainer. The total amount of offsets is $17,487.28. The report confirms the view taken of the bank s affairs by Mr. Bryson in his report as receiver to the creditors, and indicates that the assets will ultimately pay ont about the per cent named in that report, which was OS per cent.
