Two of those crippled veterans, with only two legs between them, who were dismissed called upon Assistant' Secretary Simms, wiio himself lost a leg on the confeder ate side, and who was once Gover nor of Mississippi, to to ask for reinstatement, and if the conver sation which was reported to me as having taken place between them really did occur, and I be lieve it did, the veterans certainly had insult addec to the injury lliat had previously been done to them. When they pleaded lor reinstate ment because of their crippled condition .preventing them earn ing a living for their families out side the government service, Mr. Simms told them that there were many crippled ex confederates who had to earn their living with out employment from the govern ment and without being helped out by pensions from the United States. Your correspondent does not believe in reviving or keeping alive the prejudices of the war, but he does think that the treat ment meted out to these Union veterans is an everlasting disgrace to this administration. The son of a confederate officer said of the discharges of Union veterans; 'These men gave lour of the best years of their lives to the preser vation of tin's government, and if I had my way it should be high treason to dismiss one of them." It is rumored that Mr.. It no longer requires any other endorse ment than that of the democratic congressman from the district -to get a democrat appointed fourth class postmaster.
