On her return from Iowa Mrs. C. W. Langley was accompanied by a son who had not previously been here, and also by S. A. Buck aud family. Mr. Buck is a gentleman of some means and when he shall have become somewhat familiar with the situation will engage in business here. A" has been : stated heretofore, Messrs. Lewis Wilson and J. A. Gil bert are preparing to manufacture til nig and similar commodities near the Masonic cemetery. An extensive dry- house has been erected and the sur roundings indicate, that the projectors of the enterprise mean business. Last fall the Beach brothers raised and t purchased together about 8,000 bushels of potatoes. They bought a large quantity as low as 30 cents per builieL Had they been able to ship at once to San Francisco a few days ago, the potatoes would have brought them, . exclusive " of freight, 11.20 per bushel. Considerable interest was manifest ed in a 200 yard horse race which took place near Corvallis on Saturday last between animals owned by Ned Smitli and John Kiger. The horses started from the report of a pistol and it was a pretty race, the Smith mare winning by about two feet. In fact it seem ed incrediblo to them that tine car riages of all kinds could be made in ( orvallis. lo them it seemed a gi gantic undertaking fraught only witli loss and disaster. Others thou that there was a bare possibility of its being a success m a small way, while a few of the more sanguine ones sub scribed and paid for its oi iginal capi tal stock. The year's business has do monstrated the soundness of the jndge ment of the latter. Under the capable, conservative and energetic administration of its board of directors, coupled with intelligent. untiring and economical munagemen of its superintendent, John Sticker who knows all about what constitutes fine carriages, the enterprise has been a success from its inception, and now last obtaining recognition as one of the institutions of which the whole stale of Oregon, and Corvallis especially is justly proud. For six months and more last pas' this company has carried on its pay rolls from forty to sixty five men, and has paid them in wages from $2,500 to$3,- 500 per month. A large portion of this money has been spent here among our own business men. Two of our largest merchants told the writer of this, that had it not been tor the niou ev paid to them monthly during the past winter, resulting directly from the Carriage Co.'s monthly disburse ments, it would have been extremely difficult for them to meet their bills with their wholesale houses. No one can measure the benefit this factory is to Corvallis. When one hundred and fifty men are employed m these works, a number which will doubtless find employment there during the com ing year, and ten to fifteen thousand dollars paid monthly to these men who all live here and many of them owning their own homes, then our people will begin to realize what the Corvallis Carriage Co.' has been, and will continue to be for Corvallis and lue state at large. 1 ins company is in daily receipt of orders from Idaho, California, Washington and Oregon lor us goods .and many car loads are now moving over the different trans portation lines to the different dealers wha sell the Corvallis rigs only. Ev en to see one of the Corvallis buggies makes the grey beards wish they were young again, that tliey might have taking the exquisite pleasure of moonlight drive with their best girl in one of this company's rigs, up holstered aud finished in the highest sty le of the art. In these turnouts are combined elegance, strength and dur ability. Nono but the choicest ma' terials enter into the construction of this company's vehicles, and they are uniformly finished by skilled workmen, each being in his separate department an art isc of the highest tyie. It is to be hoped that our citizens will aid this company in every way possible and take such a deep interest m it that it shall not lack for capital sufficient to obtain the best results possible. The stockholders and directors are highly delighted with the showing the com pany has made, and are more than pleased with the year s results. The services dedicating the fire de partment s quarters in the new hall will take place about the 26th of May. The ity council has appropriated $500 for furnishing these rooms and when completed they will compare with those of any organization in the state. The furniture is to be of late design and up holstered in leather. Fine pictures, mirrors, drapings, etc., will adorn tho walls and handsome rugs will be placed upon the floors. The floor is to be oiled to better serve the purposes of the department. The boys will also n a' e an effort to secure the nucleus of a library. " Potatoes aud wood have .crept up into the list of luxuries in this vicinity. He is a proud man who can feast his eyes upon a dish of potatoes or gaze into a blazing fire in his own house hold. The fortunate person who was compelled last fall to take more wood and potatoes than he wanted from his debtors, did not know he was having greatness thrust upon him, for he is; now regarded as a prophet. OREGON PACIFIC NOTSS. - The managers report that notwith standing this is usually a dull season, the business ot the road is very satis factory and continues to increase. The company intend, shortly, to an nounce a very low rate for an excur sion to San Francisco about the mid lie of May. The steamer Willamette Vallny will comfortably accommodate about 100. passengers. It is under stood that the San Franciscans have expressed a desire to give the Oregon tans on this excursion royal enter tainment. The steamer is now mak ing the run in 36 to 38 hours. The Steamer Willamette Valley ar rived at Yaquina Thursday, and will sail on Sunday morning heavily laden. The O. P. freight train now leaves here for Albany at 3:50, an hour later than hereto'bie. By ths recent changes in time persons leaving Cor valiis may reach points east of - Albany by rail the same day. lhis Mimmer the management ' in tend to locate a number of tents about iJrmhtenbush and Uetroit lor the ac commodation of persons who wish to take an outing in those delightful Io calities. As soon as the weather and the moon are favorable the company ex pect to give a steamer excursion to Albany, and should there be any en couragement, will extend it to Inde incidence. A string band, dancing and refreshments on board will consti tute attractive features ot the event. The increase of the river business of the O. P. has necessitated additional transportation facilities. The Three Sisters, which recently came off the ways, went up to Harnsburg Thurs day and will hereafter make semi. weekly trips between that point and Portland. The Messenger will ply be tween Harrisburg and Eugene. The captain of the latter has given it as his opinion that his craft will be able to navigate that part of the river for tw months this spring. Should his sur mises prove well founded, the people of Eugene are assured of a long sea son of river navigation next year. The Hoag is to resume her daily run be tween Portland and Sdeni. The Beutly is laid up now, but will be re paired for next season's business. Judge rullerton was in Corvallis on Wednesday to attend to railroad busi ness. Mr. Hogg applied for 15 days additional time in which to file his re port as receiver of the Oregon Pacific. rhe petition was granted and May 15 set as the date. Attorney Gest ap plied for an order to issue receiver's certificates to the amount of $15,000 to pay insurance premiums, etc, granted. Attorney Lintheciim, rep resenting a number of the bondholders, applied for the removal of C. II. Gest as att( r.iey for receiver Hadley, alleging that some other attorney o ild better serve the all bondholders. This matter will be heard at the term of court in Lincoln county about the middle of next month. 1 lie tug Kcsolute took an excur sion party of Odd Fellows from Ya quina to .Newport Wednesday even ing, for whose lament the people of the latter place gave an interesting en tertainment. Hon. F. K. Pendleton has been appointed as the New York attorney for Receiver Hadley. Some time since a girl a('el about 16 years ran away from the Monnstery of Our Lady of Chanty, East Port land, and came to Corvallis in a des titute condition, lhe ladies of the W.C.T.U. gave her proper clothing and secured work for her. She attend ed, the revival - meetings holding at the old collee, and professed re ligion. Her piety, however, was not sufficiently strong to withstand the al lurements of the oppoHite sex, and she began "nmkin'j dates' with various young men who were evidently con niving to -effect her rum. Un last Friday night she was observed, ac- coidinx to our information, with 17 strings to her bow." The young men who formed this array of attachments to her Cupid's weapon are all known, it ia alleged, and it will be well for them to heed a gentle warning. The whereabouts of the girl was not gener ally known thereafter until Tuesday, when Chief of Police StTHfibrd was in formed of her presence -at a question able resort on First street. The pro prietress of the house volunteered the j information and stated that she had made application for admittance the night previous. Mr. Scrafford at once took charge of the wayward girl, and placed her in good hands. Thursday J. McKernan, assistant superintendent of the Boys and Girls' Aid society, ' of Portland, came up and conveyed her to thit institut'on, where, it is" hoped,, her entire reformation may le effected.- PREVENTING FUTURE MISERY.
