tion to each other will be out of the ques
tion. To whatever extent Gilliam, county
aud Multnomah aud Clats'jp aud Umatilla
and various other counties hero and there;
may manage to shirk their share of stata ex
pe ises just so much the burden is increased
upon those taxpayers who do attempt to
live up to the law in good faith. Such are
the practical operations of the mortgage tax
pastern. It is an eu"ine of juaalery, eva
sion fraud and deceit.. It is a farce that
the people are gbttiug tired of.

A petition, a copy of which is now at the
postotSce receiving signatures, will be pre-
uted at the comiug session of the loisla

Southern Pacilic is going rapidly ahead with
the work of rebuilding the. old West Side
narrow gau'e Hue, atid has a large quantity
of material on hand for that purpose. The
Woouburn extension was bailt from materi
als intended for the West Sidey aud the de
ficiency has been made good. If this state
ment sh-ill prove true, .the' result-will be
hail.d with marked gratification by one of
t!i.) most productive and extensive sections
of the' valley, which ia at pr-eseut very ill
f ivored in the matter of raihoad transporta
tion; owing to the inadequate service of the
harrow gauge line of road. ' There wouM
be a wonderful development of resources
both for the bouefit'of the company and the
communities tributary ,tf it, if the Southern
Pacific management will bestir itself to a
new deal aud raise its narrow gauge system
western Polk county, especially to
standard gituge proportions not only as re
gnrds the iron highway and its appurten
ances, but in the general daily management
of traffic all along the line.

state of Washington: have attracted a great

from her magnificent forests logs that wonld
dwarf the Washington monsters into insig
nificance. Matt Colli van, a timber land
locator aad experienced lumberman, who
lives near the Breitenbush above this place,
says that he "can get out a timber within
five miles of Green Basin that will square
fanr ard a half feet and 140 feet long. He
also says that there is a tree on his claim
that measures thirty oue feet in circumfer
ence six feet above the ground and 170 feet
to the first limb. It is estimated that there
is 70,000 feet of lumber in the tree. San
