"Very soon all eyes . will be , turned toward the legislature, for some wise legislation is ex pected this winter, insomuch as it is badly needed. Oue of th laws that cries loudly aud yet more loudly for change from year to year is that relating to taxation and as sessment. Under the present system the property more and more of it escapes tax ation every year, while in the different counties the ' indebtedness (so claimed) is growing alarmingly. Some believe a pre. ciaet assessor system should be established and that there should be no exemption for indebtednes.6. There will be an act pro posed exempting homesteads from execution, And then there will be an act for appropria tiou for a fish way at Oregon City, and one for the completion of the state honse extending it on the north and south ends according to the original plans, which would add much to the beauty and symmetry of the building. And then there will be an ef fort made to established a jute bag factory at the state penitentiary. It would require an appropriation of 75,000 to equip and put in operation such a factory as is proposed but such an institutation would save tens of thousands of dollars annually, to the farmers of the state on grain sacks.' There is a general feeling throughout the state and among the members fovorable to ' the scheme and from conversation with mem bers of the legislature the opinion is formed that the proposed bill will become a law. Statesman. VILE AND TIN WORTHY Of consideration are nostrums of which it is asserted and there are many such that they cure immediately bodily, aliments, of longstanding. For these, for malaria, rheumatism, kidney trouble, and more re cently "la grippe," this highly .and profes sionally commended medicine, is an un doubted specific. Nothing can exceed it, moreover, as a means of imparting strcngth to the feeble and nervous. To Improve the Willamette. Major Hanbury, in his report to the government 00 improvements needed in our waterways, nay 8 ot tae Willamette river that it is worthy of improvement, and that for 150 miles to Eugene it can be made navigable for vessels, which will greatly assist in car- ying the products of the Willamette valley. He also points oat the importance of the cornniercA of this region as a reason the river should be improved. He estimates that 112,000 will be necessary to make a urvej and plans for the improvement which th river will require. FOR GOOD ROADS. Puranaut to a call which appeared in the city papers a number of the public spirited citizens of Benton connty met in this city last Saturday for the purpose of taking o.n - action towards securing legislation which will tend to give us better county triads." . : The mooting was called to order at the court hfiiae in the afternoon and Hon. C. B. Croano was elected chairman, and $. S. Hufford secretary. - - - The followiug motion was introduced and seconded: "It is the scure of this meeting that all favor a direct road tax, and t!int our representatives are hereby, instructed to secure proper legislation! to that end." This was carried by a unanimous vote of the meeting. It is proposed to introduce a bill from this county at t!a next session ofs the legis lature which will provide for the repeal of the present road laws and a 'evy of a two- mill tax on all property in the county for road purposes; also a road poll tax ranging from $1.50 to $3.00, the same to be collected and to be kept in a separate fuud to bo dis burned for road purposes. It will be left with the county court to apportion this money am n; the various road districts. The court is to distribute this money ac cording to the amouut of taxablo property mid oonditiou of the roads in each district, the ouvt to have the power to let the work by contract or day la'onr aud to ap point a general superintendent and such foremen as may be dvvmed necessary to perform the work. The times are ripe for a movement to wards butter road laws and improving our county roads aud those are beiug made all over the country, showing that the people are awakening to the great importance of having good r.iads. Let everybody euuttur- age this move as much as possible.-, - OXE-HORSE STORK We noticed an art'ele in last week's Ga ZETTK complaining about the way goods are sold at o little one-horse store in town which was evidently driving at us, in which the writer states that we are uivintr our goods away. "Now, wo want to say right h'jre that we pay for our goods aud we ex pect to sell them, or give them away, ; we please. Wc admit that we are uoc very large coucern, but we cau supj-ly any body all the gcods they want at any time. and at the prices quoted. We have four horso goods but one-horse prices. We hav au unlimited supply of first class goods and will continue to have as long as San Fran ciaco and Portland bold out.. So let the people come ami buy us out. Money saved in buying is as good as made by hard labor. It seems that the brother is a little nervous a'wut the prices we are asking for our goods but as times are hard and money is -scarce. it is necessary to come down to bedrock prices. This will be onr motto in - the fu ture. What is the least wo can afford, to sell this and that article for. We ask the people to try ns and see if the above is not verified from now on.
