the Inland of Mauritus.
Thousands of Indians had assembled
on the grounds when I arrived and
presented a picturesque appearance
with their yellow, pink, or scarlet
robes, wrapped in graceful folds about
them, while the men wore massive gold
or silver ear, toe, and finger rings,
anklets, etc. An old man, who seemed
to be acting as a priest, after going
through various incantations, was ap
proached bv a well-dressed Indian.
The old fel'low muttered something
and then they both set up a shout.
The priest uncoiled a rope and began
lashing the Indian over the head and
face, bringing blood at every blow.
The victim, or "happy man," as he was
called, never winced, but stood motion
less until the flagellation was over. He
was then smeared with ashes and
scarlet paint, and was considered one
of the heroes of the day. My attention
being attracted by a crowd at the en
trance, I went to see the cause, and
found a young man lying quite nude
upon the ground. On "making inquiries
1 discovered that he had been very
sick and had made a vow that if he re
covered he would roll around the tem
ple, and lie was about to fulfill his vow.
As he rolled along his wife went before
him to clear away any chips or stones
that niicrht hurt him. He appeared to
be in the last stages of consumption,
and when he had completed half the
distance he fainted. Buckets of water
were thrown on him and he revived
aufliciently to continue, the crowds en
couraging him. He finished the circle
of the temple and then fainted again.
Four men removed him to the shade of
a, tamarind tree, where the women
combed the dirt out of his long hair
-and washed his body. He was speech
less when I left him, and it did not
seem as if he could long survive his
task. The religions rite which is
called running upon tire created a good
deal of excitement among the wor
shipers. Piles of wood were burned
which in about one hour became a bed
of live embers. These embers were
distributed over a square of about
twenty-six feet. An excavatiou a foot
deep and six feet square was made
near the embers, which was filled with
water. When everything was declared
to be ready by the priest, who was the
master of ceremonies, music was heard
in the distance and a procession moved
along the grassy plain, preceded by a
man bearing a "platform, upon which
was an image dressed in Indian cos
tume, loaded with jewelry. A similar
procession advanced from the opposite
side and faced the first. At a given
signal an old man with only a cloth
.about his loins, bearing a child iu. his
arms, stepped into the square and
walked across the bed of embers with
out flinching. Three young men fol
lowed, and then a dozen rushed in aud
ran across, stopping for a moment to
cool their feet in the trench tilled w ith
water. The contortions, screeching,
and yelling of the latter were terrible,
and "would make the stoutest heart
quail. The Indians who walk overthe
tire have to pay for the privilege of so
doing, aud they claim that it is only
when they are sinful that the tire cau
hurt them. Another form of worship
or rather torture, was to run wires
through the body and then work them
back and forth. When the blood ran
a certain powder was thrown upon the
body so it would not show plainly. I
saw men and women with skewers
thrust through their, cheeks, tongues,
and lips, and one poor wretch had a
sharp wire, as thick as a large pin, in
serted in the forehead and passed
through the face downward, until it
came out at the chin. These men paid
$2 each for the privilege of having a
wire run through them, besides other
fees to the gods and priests. Brooklyn

Berry Names.
"Strawberry." A fruit. The word
is made up of "straw" and "berry."
The Aryan root of straw is star, which
means to strew the star being a
strewer of light. ' By the time the Ar
yan root has passed through several
changes in passing from Asia to the
Anglo-Saxon land it has become strae.
Straw is a corruption of strae. which
means to stray. The strawberry is a
straying plant is a stray-berry in re
ality, but owing to the corruption no
ted is known as strawberry, So star
and straw-berry are both from the
same Aryan word. Both are beautiful.
"Berry" comes-from the Sanskrit bhas,
to eat." In Anglo-Saxon it is berga,
and in Gothic, bhas, the same as in the
older tongue, .the Sanskrit. The sense
of bhas seems to be "edible fruit."
"Raspberry." The old name was
rasmse-be.rrv. In fact, as mav oe no
ted in Bacon's Essay, the fruit was
called raspes, without the berry. In
Italian it is rasno, a rasp, a rough im
plement, which quality this fruit is
supposed to resemble hence its name
rasp-berry.
'Gooseberry.1 The word has noth
ing to do with goose. The proper name
is groise-berry. The word is krus, or
kroes, crisp, curling, or frizzled which
relates to the condition of the surface
of the rougher kinds of the wild goose
berrv. "Huckleberry." The same as whor
tleberrv, both variants of hurtleberry,
which is but a corruption of the old
English heorot, a hart (u male deer)
anSberige, berrv. Davenport Democrat.

THE WHITE ANTS OF AFRICA. "
They Build Great Structures of Clay In
the Trees and on the Ground.
The white ant is blind; it has maziy
enemies, and can never procure food
until it comes above ground. How
does it solve the difficulty? It takes
the ground out along with it. I have
seen white ants working on the top of
a high tree, and yet it was under
ground. They took up some of the
ground with them to the tree-top; just
as the Esquimaux heap snow up, build
ing it into the low tunnel huts in
which they live, so the white ants col
lect earth,' only in this case not from
the surface, but from some depth un
derneath the ground, aud plaster it
into tunneled ways. Occasionally
these run along the "ground, but more
often mount in endless ramification to
the tops of the trees, meandering along
every branch and twig, and here and
there debouching into large covered
chambers which occupy half the girth
of the trunk. Millions of trees in some
districts are thus fantastically plastered
over with tubes, galleries, a'nd cham
bers of earth, and many pounds' weight
of subsoil must be brought up for the
mining of even a single tree.
Peering over the growing wall one
soon discovers one, two. or more ter
mites of a somewhat larger build, con
siderably longer, and especially of the
mandibles. These important-looking
individuals saunter about the- rampart
in the most leisurely way, but yet with
a certain air of business, as if perhaps
one was the master of works and the
other the architect. They are posted
there as sentries, and there they stand,
or promenade about at the mouth of
every tunnel, like Sister Ann, to see if
anybody is coming. Sometimes some
body does come in the shape of another
aut the real ant this time, not the de
fenseless neuropteron, but some val
iant and belted knight from the war
like forniicidaj. Single or in troops
this rapacious little insect, fearless in
its chitonous coat of mail, charges
down the tree-trunk, its antennas wav
ing deliance to the enemy and its cruel
mandibles thirsting for termite blood.
The worker white ant is a poor, de
fenseless creature, and, blind and un
armed, would fall an immediate prey
to these well-drilled banditti, who for
age about in every tropical forest- in
unnumbered legion. But at the crit
ical moment, like Goliath from the
Philistines, the soldier termite advan
ces to the fight. With a few sweeps of
its scythe-like jaws it clears the ground,
ami while the attacking party is carry
ing off its dead the builders, uncon
scious of the fray, quietly continue
their work. lo every 100 workers in;
a white-ant colony, which numbers
many thousands of individuals, there
are perhaps two of these fighting men. j
The division of labor here' is very won
derful, and the fact that besides these
two specialized forms there are in every
nest two other kinds of the same in
sect, the kings aud queens, shows the
remarkable height to which civilization
in these communities has attained.
These ruouuds are built into a mesh
work of tunnels, galleries, and cham
bers where the social interests of the
community are attended to. The most
spacious of these chambers, usually far
underground, is very properly alloca
ted to the head of the society, the
queen. The queen-termite is a very
rare insect, and as there are seldom
more than one, or at most two, to a
colony, and as the royal apartments
are hidden far iu the earth, few per
sons have ever seen a queen, and in
deed most, if they did happen to come
across it, from its very singular appear
ance, would refuse to believe that it
had "any connection with white ants.
Her one duty is to lay eggs, and it
must be confessed she discharges her
function with complete success, for in
a single day her progeny often amounts

They Painted the Church.
A church in Jersey City needs paint
inr. Instead of squandering funds on
professional painters the trustees of
this church are going to economize by
getting some of the church members to
help them. Most of these good people
have never handled a paint-brush.
That will make little difference. They
are iroinir to lav the paint on with all
their might. A firm of dealers in paint
will supplv at a "-onerous discount the
needed pigments. When the brethren
meet at the church, all armed with
paint brushes of various sizes and pat
terns, there will be sucn a picnic as is
seldom seen.
A church in Kansas tried this home
made method of painting last summer
The brethren who laid on the paint
were so liberal with it that it was not
thoroughly dry for several weeks. The
backs of the pews' were not cushioned,
so it seemed good to the amateur paint
ers to adorn -the backboards with a
coat of white. This was laid on so
thickly as to be glossy, and was much
admired until the hrst bunday, wnen
the people who sat in the pews leaned
arainst it. Many of them stuck fast.
The pew-backs were disfigured by the
marks of the Sunday clothes which
were pressed against them. The Sun
dav clothes were spoiled by the paint
which thev took from the pew-backs.
The congregation, homeward bound,
presented two remarkable spectacles
one from behind, the other from before.
The rear view gave the idea of a white
washed flock of worshippers. From
the front the faces of the victims of
home-made painting had a discon
tented and sorrowful look, as if just
let loose from a funeral. The pastor
escaped the baptism of pigment, as no
body had thought of painting the cush
ioned back of the pulpit sofa. New
