MYSTERY PLAY AT MICE.
Carton Spectacle Which Mingled The
ology with the Autics of a Clown.
John Swinton, is an interesting let
ter to the N. Y. Sun describes the so
called "Mystery Play" witnessed by
him at the city of Nice: The play was
performed in a weather beaten tab
ernacle known as the Theatre Risso.
located in a part of the city with which
fashionale visitors are not apt to be
familiar. It is approached through a
narrow old courtyard, near which are
scores of these very narrow streets
lined with strong and high stone
houses that were built ages and ages
ago, and that are likely to stand for
ages yet to come unless their demoli
tion is brought about in the interest of
sanitary science. It is entered through
a eurious opening at one end, where a
burly and large-mouthed individual
(who afterward turned out to be one
of the actors) announces that admis
sion is free to all, an announcement
which is qualified, however, by the
fact that the desirable scats must be
paid for, and also by the "passing of
the hat"' at the end of each act of the
play.
The title of the mystery was "The
Manger of Bethlehem." It represent
ed the incidents of the advent of Christ,
as recordi-d in the gospels, from the
annunciation to the birth in the
manger. The chief figures on the
stage were Joseph and Mary, the
Angel Gabriel and Satan; but there
were also other characters not to be
found in the scriptural narrative, in
cluding a clown and his partners, who
introduced comic features that were
greatly enjoyed by the spectators. Id
truth, one of the most singular things
about the play was the mixture of fan
tastic elements with the solemn mys
teries of the advent. The house was
frequently rent with laughter just
after or just before the highest religious
sentiment had been evoked.
The characters of Joseph and Mary,
as they appeared on the stage, were
dignified and natural, and their dis
course and intercourse was in every
way becoming. The Angel Gabriel
was represented by a stalwart and
beautiful young woman clad in white,
and she wielded her sword with suc
cess against Satan, who appeared with
the traditional horns and garb, and
sprang around with agility in his vain
efforts to do battle against the advent.
The stage was well set aud the
scenery was plain but appropriate. At
the end of the performance the infant
was seen in his cradle beside Joseph
and Mary, under the guardianship of
Gabriel.
After having been notified at the
door that admission was free, we paid
for our seats, but this was not the last
of the demands upon our purse. At
the end of each act performers left the
stage, took a plate, and went from
seat to seat through the house solicit
ing gifts of money, and securing a
good many copper coins. It looked
queer to see the Angel Gabriel in flow
ing robes of white, wilh others among
the actors, thus engaged; and it was
pleasing to see that neither Joseph
nor Mary had been chosen to do any
part of this work.

A Once Despised Vegetable.
Some paper, speaking of the the to
mato crop, says that 72,000.00'J cans
"were put up last year" aud refers to
the old times when the tomato was
called the "love apple," and held about
as fair a match for "ground cherries"
as food for man or beast. Mr. Ii. lL
Sulgrove, the oldest newspaper man in
the city, says he remembers seeing,
when a boj in 1835 or thereabouts,
several stocks or bushes of "love
apples" growing on the north side of
Market street, near Delaware, in the
Eaiden of John Wilkins or "Archie"
ingenfelter. They were not called
"tomatoes" and nobody thought of eat
ing them more than "jimson burs."
They were not commonly grown, even
for garden ornament, and it was a half
score of years later before they came
into even occasional table use. But he
remembers that some of the doctors of
that day commended them as a health
ful thing to eat and the new name
"tomato"' became familiar. Fifty
years or more ago this was the fame
and food value of the tomato, now more
often and generally used, and in more
forms than any other garden product

Certainly there is a fresh outbreak
of Anglomania in the speech of modish
New York girls, says a letter from
Gotham to the Pittsburg Dispatch. The
new influx of actors and actresses from
London has caused it. The worst
symptom is a lengthening and broad
ening of the letter A.

her beloved pet parrot, "but I must
have a bird with an English accent."

the way that happens to be like com

they don't have crackers nowadays
in London. Say "Polly wants a bis
cuit.'" But the bird insisted that it was a
cracker he wanted, and so he was
doomed to banishment from the bou
doir, while the girl set out to find a
parrot with an English accent.

Napkins on the Lunch Counter.
Of course all restaurants cive their
customers napkins. But I never could '
understand why the down-town cafes
those where a man has to wait for his
luncheon the same as he does for his ,
shave should force a man to use his '
handkerchief for a napkin or return to
the primitive custom of Arkausas his
coat-sleeve. One of these down-town j
cafes, however, has made an innovation i
in this direction which is to be hoped :

thus shielding his immaculate linen,
was a fool. He said that it was done

One Touch of Nature.
One of New York's most prominent
citizens went slumming with his wife
and sister a few evenings since. Youn
Captain McLaughlin's precinct and
especially the lodging houses were
visited. "What do you think was the
most touching sight to me that nights"'
he asked in Delmonico's last evening,
and then he told how in a ward in one
of the cheap lodging houses for women,
on cots adjoining, was a girl of say
twenty years and on the other was an
old woman, almost weird in her squalid
haggard ness.
The girl was asleep with her throat
and bosom partly exposed. As soon as
the old woman saw the visitors in the
ward she reached over the cot of the
younger woman and drew the wretched
overlid over the exposed bosom and
throat. "That wretched old woman,
in that tender act, showed the love of a
true mother for a daughter, and they
were total strangers," concluded the
gentleman. N. Y. Sun.
