THE CORVALLIS GAZETTE, FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 1S90. THE HUMAN EAlt. Few people realize what a won derfully delicate .structure the human ear really is. That which we ordinarily designate so is, after all, only the mere outer porch of a series of winding passages, which, like the lobbies of a great buildi lead from thp world without to the world within. Certain of these passages fre full of liquid, and their membranes are stretched like parchment curtains across the cor ridor at different places, and can be made to tremble like the head of a drum or as the surface of a tam- bourine does when struck with a stick or with the fingers. Between two of these parchment-like cur tains, a chain of very small bones extends, which serves to tighten or relax these membranes, and to com municate vibrations to them. In the innermost place of all a row of white threads called nerves stretch like the strings of a piano from the last point to which the tremblings orthrillings reach and pass inward to the brain A wonderful piece of mechanism indeed. PEOPLE AND FACTS. There is no substitute for leather. Americans smoke 40,000.000 of cigars a year. When the rats leave a portion of the coal mines an accident happens. The inventor of the slylographic pen is, said to have made $1,000, 000 out of it. Central park contains 840 acres, of which 143 are occupied by the two reservoirs. Medical students can tell a fe male liver by the marks of the cor set steel on it. Buenos Ayrs has twenty-three daily papers, more than .New York or London. Pennsylvania has two Arbor days each year, one in the spring and one in the fall. There are over 4.000 working maids and widows in the depart ment of Washington. The Missouri runs 1,000 miles through Dakota and is navigable the entire distance. A man living near Pottstown, Tenn., has attended 4.000 funerals in his eighty years of life. Eighteen hundred and ninety- two is also the anniversary or tne admission of Kentucky into the Union. The pronunciation of the word "envelop" as if spelled "onvelope" is probably reminiscent of the French. Hubbard T. Smith, of the war department in Washington, sold his song "Listen to My Tale of Woe," to a Washington publisher foi$15. A few days ago a British house offered him $10,000 for the exclusive right to publish the song in Europe. The household of Mr. Brackett, governor-elect of Mass., is arbi trarily ruled by a daughter of the ate of 14 months. The rest of the family are Mr. and Mrs. Brackett, and a bright boy of 10 years; bu t they are of no account when Miss Brackett is about. Julius Baxter, of Nashvilb, the probable democratic candidate for governor of Tenn.r says .he would like to see the so-called Solid South broken. "It would be bet .ter for the south commercially," he said, and better for the whole country to have party lines changed." Senator. Hampton comes from an old and fofflnerly wealthy south ern family. Hi3 grandfather, "the old general," was quite prominent in American politics, and Senator Hampton, at the outbreak of the war, was .probably the largest slaveholder in the United States There were between 2,500 and 3,000 slaves on his plantation at one time. . Henry F. Vallance, a London lawyer, has been disbarred - for telling his client to what country he should flee after committing a crime, without danger of extradi tion. The court, in striking his Children Cry for name from the roll, took occasion to draw a sharp distinction be tween a lawyer's duty to his client in defending him when on trial and his duty to the court when appealed to by an offender to aid his escape before trial. WAKED UP EFFECTUALLY. - A lethargic, dormant condition of the liver is hardly tcrbe overcome with drastic cathartics ana nauseous cliol agogues. A gentler, pleasanter and far more effective means exists of arous ing the organ when somnolent. This is Hostetter's Stomach Bitters, vouch ed lor by the medical fraternity, tested by the public for many years. A re sumption by the biliary organs organ of its secretive fiffltion, with the ac tivity attendant upon health, a return to regularity of the bowels, aud a re newal of digestion, are the no less happy and certain results of using the Bitters systematically. Its laxative ef fect is never painful and drenching, its tendency being rather to perpetuate regularity than to produce a copious action. Malaria, nervousness, debility, kidney troubles and neuralgia it sub dues effectnally. An authentic list of the princi pal subscribers to the democratic campaign fund of 1888 has been published. Next to W. L. Scott, the coal monopolist, Havemeyer, the head of the sugar trust, is the largest subscriber. The list is as follows: President Cleveland, $10,000; Secretary Whitney, $20, 000; Secretary Vilas, $10,000; Postmaster-General Dickinson, $10,000; Secretary Fairchild, $10, 000; Secretary Edicott, $10,000; Secretary Bayard, $10,000; W. L. Scott, (coal monopolist), $75,000; Cal. Brice (in ninety nine other things), $50,000; W. II. Have meyer (sugar trust), $60,000; A. P. Gorman, $20,000; W. H. Barnum (pig-iron monopolist), $10,000; Herman Oelrichs, $50, 000. What kind of a showing does this make for a "tariff reform," "anti-trust" and "anti-monopoly" party. . MOTHERS! A Canadian Pacific railway tunnel is driving right through the lode, whichN is simply one solid body of ore. This ore has always been mistaken for red granite, but it turns out to be a very rich body of zinc. It is at, least 100 feet wide. The ore assays 65 per cent, zinc, 10 per cent, iron, $250 in gold and $150 in silver to the ton. It is estimated that The ocean steamers running out of the port of New York received in passenger fares alone, last year, over $30, 000,000, and not a dollar ofHhis vas sum wis earned by a vessel carrying the American flag. The big subsidies granted by foreign governments to their ships ac counts for the decay of America's foreign commercs. UNION PACIFIC RY. "Columbia River Route.'' In the- first place they are much more frequent as there are more large iivis emptying into the sea and the indentations in the coast are numerous. Few of them are what would be called b.irred har bors. If there are bars they do not shift- much and the water" is always very deep even over theie. There is a reason for this condition, or freedom from serious obstructions. The moun tains in the east are not . near the. sea board. Nearly all of the rivers that empty, directly into the ocean flow through long areas of comparatively level country and do not take the sar;d and debris along with them that they would were they mountain streams. Then the country has been so long settled and cleared that the amount of surplus material in the form of drift wood and other refuse matter is very small. Considering then how tittle has been done to improve, on nature in our western harbors, while millions have been spent in the east with not so many obstacles as here, certainly every effort should be made to gain and use appropriations well for aiding navigation. Astoiian. It. is estimated that the cost of collecting statistics to settle the question of the mortgage indebted ness of the country will amount to at least $1,000,000. This sum, properly used, will bring out infor mation on the subject, that is com plete and reliable. Hot a Pimple on Baby Baby one year old. Bad with Eczema. Hair all gone.
