(Ikklfe (incite. SCIENTIFIC SCRAPS. A commission of the German railway companies estimates the duration of steel rails at 35 years. A recent death from hydropho bia is supposed to have resulted from allowing a dog to lick a razor-cut on the face. The telephone has brought its disease, long-continued use of the instrument being sometimes fol lowed by painful weakness and ringing in the ears and vertigo. Complete rest is the only remedy necessary. Prof. Gunning estimates the average amount of water passing over Niagara Falls as 18,000,000 cubic feet, or 502,000 tons per minute, of which somewhat more than two-thirds flows over Horse shoe Falls. Prof. Elihu Thompson has de vised an electric welding car, which makes continuous rails of the track over which it passes. In thus welding the rails, it is proposed to have a break at every 100 feet, to. allow for expansion. More than 1,000 peaks in the Himalayas have been found by measurement to exceed 20,000 feet in height, and it is estimated that at least 2,000 reach this alti tude. In the Alps there are two peaks more than 15,000 feet high, and six or seven over 14,000 feet. The north star is approaching the pole. Mr. T. H. Safford has found that it will reacq 89 de. about 1944 A. D., and will remain within a degree of the pole 300 years, making its nearest approach about 2102, when the declination will be 89 deg. 32 min. 23 sec onds. Of the 4,200 kinds of flowers growing in Europe, only 420 are odoriferous. Less than one fifth of the white kinds which number 1,191 are fragrant, 77 of the 951 yellow kinds, 85 of the 823 .red kinds, 31 of the 594 blue kinds, 13 of the 308 violet blue kinds, and 28 of the 240 kinds with com bined colors. The word cyclone was first pre posed by Piddington in 1848 to describe the violent hurricanes of the tropics, in which the wind ro tates, in the northern hemisphere, opposite to the hands of a watch. The term anticyclone was first used by Mr. F. Gal ton in 1863 to represent wind motion in the op posite direction. For protecting smoke-pipes lrom rust, the plan has been recom mended of coating with coal-tar, then filling with shavings and ig niting the latter. The tar seems to be literally burned into the iron, effectually closing the pores against oxidation. A chimney i reated in this way . has not been painted since it was raised, more than twenty years ago, and is now as bright as newt Speaking of London, Cardinal Manning says: "There are 4,000, 000 of living and dying and dead souls. And if every church or chapel or place of worship of every sort and kind were filled three times to the fill on every Lord's day they could not contain more than 1,500,000. There must be, therefore, 2,500,000 who can never physically set their feet in any place of divine worship or any place where the name and exist ence of God are recogmz ?d. A very simple apparatus for ob taining an electric spark is made by a German physicist. Round the centre of a common lamp chimney is pasted a strip of tin foil, and another strip is pasted from one end of the chimney to within a quarter of an inch of this ring; Then, 9, piece of silk is wrap ped around a brush and the in terior of the chimney is rubbed briskly. In the dark a bright electric spark may be seen to pass from one piece of tin, foil to. the other each time the brush is with drawn from the chimney. Many other experiments can be tried with this apparatus. The City of Rome's engines have six cylinders, three of more than seven feet in diameter, and they indicate 11,890 horse power. The Etruria and Umbria each have three cylinders two of nine feet and one of six feet and develop 14, 321 horse power. The City of New York and City of Paris each have triple expansion engines of 20,000 horse-power. Two vessels of the Italian navy have engines of 18,000 horse power, and two lave engines of 19,500 horse-power. The most wonderful engines yet designed, however, are those of the Sardegna, with twelve main cylinders, to develop 22,800 horse power. FIGHTING TRUSTS. Children Cry for; A SATISFIED SUCKER. The people of North Carolina have adopted a very sensible way of fighting a trust, and furnish a lesson that should not be wasted on the people of other states. About eighteen months ago all the manufacturers of jute bagging, a product used for cotton wraps in the South, formed a trust and made a large advance in their price to consumers. It is estimated that the cotton planters of North Car olina were by this means robbed needlessly of more than $2,000,000 in 1888. In order to fight this monopoly, there was organized what is known as the Farmers' Alliance, which now numbers 85, 000 members, its main object be ing to prevent the puichase by any cotton gin in the state of any jute bagging, ane it has worked so well that jute bagging is offered for two cents a pound by the trust with no takers. The members in sist that only cotton bagging shall be used, and they have already almost succeeded in destroying the jute bagging trust, so far at least as North Carolina is concern ed. The success of this alliance shows that no trust or combine of an unlawful nature can succeed in their purpose, which is to rob the people, if they, the people, will only stand together and wage bat tle against the enemy. The peo pie will have right on their side and are bound to come out victor ious. "Why don't you cultivate a little style?" asked a Trout of a Sucker whom he happened to meet. "Why do you insist on living in this mud hole and never visit the clear cold springs? ; Limber up your body and . hire somebody to get a section of a rainbow and sprinkle it over you. I would not live like you for anything, grub bing away all the time for a meal in the mud. Flies form a deli cious diet. Just look at that beauty there which has just drop ped on the water. Just watch me take him and then envy the life of a trout." Saying this the Trout made a dash for the fly and seized it. But the fly had buried in it a steel hook, and on the hook was a line, and on the line a rod, and an angler held the rod. The Trout soon disappeared from the water and the next noise he made was when he was sizzling over a fire. "It may be nice enough to be a Trout." philosophized the Sucker, "but I would rather be a poor, de spised Sucker, with no rainbow attachment?, in a mud hole than a Trout in a frying pan. N. Y. It is believed that the contro versy between Secretary Noble and Corporal Tanner over the lat- ter's management of the pension office is not at an end, and we are to hear considerable more of it. We are sure that we voice the sen timent of a long suffering public when we say that it is to be hoped that the trouble may be allowed to die out, but if the two belligerents persist in airing thoir differences, President Harrison will take a hand in the matter and place Noble where Tanner is on the shelf. They will all then be quickly seated and the young man of the party will arise, and, bowing to the young woman, reach his hand in the lantern just above his head.
