The democrats are doing at present a great deal of illiberal grumbling over tbe removals from office being made by Deputy Postmaster-General Clarkson. The latter official exposes the hollow- ness of the democratic criticism in a sentence: "If President Cleveland had not appointed democrats in place of outsted republicans the administra tion would have now very few demo crats to remove." There is another point about these removals which has been overlooked ly the protesting democrats. Nearly all of the democratic postmasters now being replaced are removed upon the reports of inspectors upon the conduct of their offices. These inspectors are in every instance democrats appointed By the last administration and not yet affected by the present one. When Cleveland's administration was charged with! too many removals four years ago it had no such exguses to. offer and had to fall back upon the flimsy-charge of "offensive partizsn bhip" against the republicans it deter mined to behead. Jay Gould has lost several great op jiortnnities to redeem his reputa tion from greed and covetousness. His latest chance was afforded by the Johnstown calamity. With several thousand miles of railroad and other properties, aggregating .$75,000,000, lie sends $1000 ta the sufferers George W. Childs, of Philadelphia, worth ten per cent, of Gould's weaVi, gave ten times as much. With few exceptions the rich men of our nation have not loosened their purse strinafto any noticeable extent. One of the leading daily an I weekly papers on the Pacific coast at present is the Spokane Falls Review started as a 5-column quartos on Juue 16, 1884, it is now up to a 7-column eight page daily with a twelve page weekly, and lias just ' purchased and had put in tunning order a Goff perfecting press with a capacity of 24,000 papers per Jiour. It has been reported that the Oregonian publishing company now owns about a two-thirds interest in the Review, which probably accounts for the improvement Walking along one of the streets of (fiorvailis during the past week we saw and old piece of paper laying by the sidewalk. Having a curiosity to see what , it was we picked it up when, quicker than a Corvallis girl can chew gum, it was dropped it had the words "Water Ditch" printed on jt with a eall for a meeting. It would not do to call up the once enthusiastic feelings of the Corvallis board of trade they, like the boom and ditch question, are a thing of the long, long past. Yamhill county has a new weekly paper, the Lifeyette Ledger, and is soon to have one at Sheridan called the Journal. . This will make six papers for that county.. Benton county once had the largest number but now has only four. Wait; yes wait tillsome of the moss tarn dry. Why, then some of the business end of the "boom" m y ap pear. For many centuries there bra boen ft tradition of a long lust Wand called Atlantis. Ihe Greek geograpeis located it n the Atlantic Ocean, wt of the north west pait of Africa and tlio Jill;trs of llercu.es. The sea-kinga of AtLtntis are said to Lava invaded Europe u:id Africa, and to have beou defeated by tlio Athen ians. All the legends agree that it was a vapt island, of inexhaustible resources, and inhabited by a race of superior people. For ages this island has existed o.dy in legendary lore. But now, when the light of modern research is turned full u-j' ' the investigation, behold the ket AUau.,.,41 si our very uo r.-'. So tbejjigoted medical fraternity goes groping about in the dark, seeking for an Atlantis or Esculapius, when if they would investigate, th-jy would behold the lent Atlantis at their very door. With their ancient text book, a case of jihysic, a paper in their waistcoat giving thorn license to practice, experiment and dose with their injurious drugs, couter izs and perforin unnecessary acts, with no person or law to hold them account able, they continue their bigoted, un justified practice, ttaring ir.to vacancy, and imagining that they see in them selves an Esculapius. Wrapped in ancient bigotry, tbey are cryinfe out against ali improvements that have been made in im-dii-al science. They denounce any new idea advanced by a layman or au opposition school as a fraud. Why? Because human ;ty will not be bene fited? Hot at all, but because their specialism did not make the discovery. Yet they concede that there is no rem edy known to their materia me Jica that will cure an advanced kidney malady and the diseas -s arising therefrom al though many of them know from. crown ing proof that Warner's Safe Cure will but unscrupulous'y treat symptoms and call them a dissase, when in reality they know they are butymptoms. A few of the more honest physicians admit that Warner's Safe Cure .is a valu able remedy, and a great blessing to mankind, but say in so many words, whijn asked why they do not prescribe it, that they cannot, according "to their code. Nevertheless, the world i3 fast becom ing satisfied that the cure for kidney and liver diseases, in whatever form or con dition, has been discovered, and there is no doubt but what Warner's r?afe Cure and its fame wid live long after t-ucli bigotry as we have instanced is dead and burieu. The late eminent physician and writer, Dr, J. ti. Holland, published in "Serib ner's Monthly," and showed his opinion of such bigotry, and no doubt was satis--fied that At'antis might possibly be dis covered in a proprieta: y in tdiciue, when he wrote editoria ly, as follows: "Nevertheless, it is a fact that many of the best proprietary medicines of the day were more successful than many of the physicians, anl most of them, it thouM be remembered, were first dis covered or used in a. tual medical prac tice.' When, however, any hhrewd per son, knowing their virtue, and foreseeing their popularity, secures and advertises them, then, in the opinion of the bigoted, all virtue went out of thorn." LOCALS. I am going to tell yon of the extraordi nary change your Cuticuka II ekf.di iis per formed on me. About the 1st of April last I noticed some red pimples like coiiiiin; iut all over my body, but thought nothing of it until some time later on, when it began to look like spots of mortar spotted on, ami which "came olF in layers, accompanied with itching. I would scratch every night until I waa raw, then the next night the scales, being formed meanwhile, were scratched ofi' again. Iu vaiu did I consult all the doctors in the country, but without aid. Afier giving up all hopes of recovery, I happened to see an advertisement in the newspnpA about your Outictra Remedies, and pur chased them from my druggist, and obtained almost immediate relief. I began to no tice that the scaly eruptions gradually dropped off anil disappeared m:e by one, and have heen fully cured. I had the disease thirteen months before I began taking the Cuticcra Remedies, and in four or live weeks was eutirely cured. My disease was eczem t and psoriasis. I rec com mended the Cuticcra Remedies to ali in my vicinity, and I know of a greatmany who have taken thein, and thank me for the knowledge ot them, especially mothers who have babes with scaly eruptions on their heads and bodies. I eanuot exaf-jm iu words the thanks " to you for what the Cuticcra Remedies have been to me. My body was covered with scales, and I was an awful spectacle to behold. Now my skin is as nice and clear as a baby's. GEO. COTEY, Merrill, Wris. Sept. 21, 1887. Feb. 7, 1888. No trace of the disease from which suffered has shown itself since my cure. G. C.
