GENERAL ITEMS. The Indian reservations com prise perhays 100,000,000 acres. Salt Lake has lost 9 per cent, of it saltness in the last five year?. In great Gotham-on the Hudson there are 5575. lawyers, big and little. Brazilian freedmen are to make a demonstation in celebration of their independence. The whole number of active Christian Scientists now in the Gountry is estimated at 150,000. During the last ten years Ameri cans have contributed $20,000,000 to relieve suffering caused by dis asters or epidemics. Old '89, in which have fallen the Samoan, Denmark and Johns town disasters, began with a total eclipse and will end with a total eclipse. The United States fish commis sion hatched this year 70,000,000 eggs of the toothsome shad less than half as many as last year. A Georgia farmer prevents his cows from jumping fences by cut ting off their lower eyelashes, which makes a fence look three times as high as it is. Eiffel, the builder of the tall tower, claims his decent directly from William Tell. There have been historic doubts as to the ex istence of Mr. Tell, but this will settle them. A Dakota newspaper paints the following unique advertisement: WI1 John Jones, who twenty years ago deserted his poor wife and babe, will return, said babe will lick the; stuffin' out of him." . Colonel' Ingersoll is getting ready for his summer vacation and he will speud the greater part of it at Saratogo. It is in hotel life, with plenty of cheerful company around him, that the colonel loves best to "commune with nature.'' Russel Harrison's latest business renture is the erection of a new hot swimming bath at Helena, Mont. The bath is to be 120 feet square, and the water as it" flows into the bath from the sprigs will drop a distance of forty-two feet in a cascade. . The old rule that no divorced woman could be presented at the English court has' been .rescinded. Any divorced woman with whom no fault rested is admitted by.spe cial permission from the queen, after her majesty .has satisfied hep , self that the applicant was free from blame. At Gippsland, in Australia, they have earth worms six feet long. They live in burrows on the slop ing sides of creaks, and are some times turned out of the ground by the plow. They have a curious smell, like creosote, and fowls re fuse to touch them, but old natives f the district say that oil made from them is good for rheumatism. Laura Hutchinson told a friend about one amusing resource con stantly employed by the poet Wordsworth when he wanted to secure a thought. Over 16,000,000 acres of land were sold in the last fiscal year, under the operation of the home stead aud timber-culture law. There are seventy-five miles of lumber below Cape Hatteras. This lumber ha3 been washed into the ocean from Johnstown, Pa. To say that free trade is a back number in this country does not fullv state the case. It is out of print. N. Y. Tribune. There is a tree at Brunswick, Ga., under which more than a hundred teams can " find shelter from tho sun's rays at one time.
