OF GROWING IMPORTANCE,
An exchange says that all over
the1 United States the . proper care
of the insane is a question of grow
ing' importance. The figures re
garding insanity in this country
are very misleading to all but the
experienced and careful statis-
uan. For instance, the census
of I8T0 gave the number of in
sane in the United States as 37,
452, wiule the census takers in
1880 found 91,997 of this class,
this would indicate that while the
population of the country had in
creased during the decade only
aKout 30 per cent, the number of
the insane had increased nearly
118 per cent.
This is probably an overesti
mate, for the reason that the cen
sus of 1880 was more exact and
cornpieliensive than that of the
previous- decade. But even where
statistics are collected by the same
set of men and according to the
same- roles for a series of years, the
increase is marked and alarming.
F. B. Sanborn of the state board
of lunacy and charity of Massachu
setts, amd acting-lunacy commis
sioner of that state since 1879, re
ports that the number of insane
fti asylums, etc., is now increasing
"from 200 to 250 per year, which
is a much larger proportionate in
eteas than that of the same popu
lar fort. Similar facts have been
observed in New York and in
other 6tates. -This increase is
partfy nominal, resulting from the
fact that many persons are now
considered insane who a few year
o would not have been so
eirameratedT. Fut there can be no
doubt that there is a real as well
as a nonvnal increase in the in
sane, and that no single. cause will
account for it.
There are several explanations
of this increase in the numbers
of the insane suggested by writers
mson the subject of insanity
These may be stated as follows
First, the large immigration of
foeeigners into the country whose
antecedents, are not known and
whose mental oondition is not
scrutinized with sufficient care by
the officials of the port of entry
Second, the over strain of our
modern life, especially in large
cities, doubtless drives many a
balanced and ambitious mind in
sane. Third, the increasing hu-
manftv of treatment lessens the
r
death rate in asylums and hence
increases the number of patients.
There is a fourth reason suggested
by Drv Pliny Eaile and endorsed
by many physicias. It is that in
sanity is becoming more and more
an incurabfe disease.
