A" bill was introduced in the
Nebraska legislature for the pre
Trention of reckless shootins:, in
which occurs this reckless phrase
oloirv: "It shall be unlawful for
anjT person to fire off or discharge
any pistol, revolver, shotgun, rifle,
or any firearms whatsoever, on
any public road or highway in any
county of the state of Nebraska,
or within sixty yards of such pub
lic road' or highway, except to de
stroy some wild, ferocious and
dangerous beast, or an officer in
the discharge of his duty."
The work of surveying the en
tire route of the Conga railroad
has been finished and work will
probably soon be begun. The
length of the route is about two
hundred miles. The engineers
reckon that it will take two or
three years to build it, and cost
abottt five million dollars. When
finished it will be the most im
portant means yet secured for
opening the heart of Africa to
civilization.
Harrson's secretary of agricul
ture, "Jerry Rusk," is a good ex
ample of what a man can amount
to. lie used to drive mules on a
canal and had as companion on the
tow path another barefooted boy,
James A. Garfield. Rusk after
wards drove stage, then was sheriff,
meraher of the legislature, volun
teer in the army, congressman,
governor of Wisconsin, and may
be heard from yet.
Zinc, placed upon a fire in a
stove-or grate, is said to operate
as an effective extinguisher of
chimney fires. . According to this
representation, when a fire starts
inside a chimney, from whatever
cause, a piece of thin sheet zinc,
about four inches square, is to be
put into the stove or grate con
necting with the chimney. The
zinc fuses" and 'liberates aciduous
fumes, which, passing up the flue,
are said to almost instantly put out
whatever fire there may be.
Some parties boring for gas at
Litchfield, III., were horrified at
striking blo6dand afterward hear-'
ing cries at the depth of 300 feet.
A voice called up to them through
the hole: "You have killed some
one down here!" ' Later the mys
tery was solved by the presenta
tion of a bill for $50, "for one mule
killed1 drill." .There was a
coal mine, underneath which the
drill had pierced,' and struck a
mule; killing him.
