Notwithstanding; it is only a short time until the president-elect must announce . his advisers, the whole country seems filled with burning eagerness to knew now who are going to form the execu tive family. . The av'.uinsitration has lieen en trusted for the next four years to Benj. "Harrison; can we not await his selec tion and trust to his judgment in naming hfs: lieutenants? The univer sal verdictof all who know Mr. Har rison personally is that he is possessed of rare, good, common sense, careful and conscientious deliberation in form ing his opinions and unswerving firm ness irr following hi3 judgment when maturecL Such a man cannot be hur ried' or intimidated. That he will en tJfavor to select tlw very best material for his cabinet as a whole and the most fitting man for each individual place is assured. Blaine seems to have been settled upon as the future premier.- Certainly there is no abler man for the. position in America. Under his control of the Btute department no American at home or abroad would ever need to blush for his country, and no foreign govern ment would ever attempt to enroach wion our rights. Of course he is not the only material for premier. The republican party is rich in the . ability and talent of its members, and the in coming president will never lack for large reserves from which i to select adx. -xiaers. - THlfJfE IF SO UTH. ' The recent election of United States senators gives the republicans absolute and undisped control of that t body for many years to come. Delaware und New Jersey sead republicans in lace of Democrats, whose terms ex pire on March 4th. The Bayards and Saulsburys have owned Delaware time without memory. But- not only did the tariff question break the backbone of the solid south it lias disjointed the spinal column of the southern chiv alry in Maryland and West Virginia, says the San Jose Mercury. It is the most no.table revolution in politics that has occurred for many years. The bone and sinew have begun to think, and by the time that another presi dential election shall come around, many other leaders of southern politics will be set aside, and wiser, more liber al minded, broad gage and "patriotic men will come to the front, and then the new south will indeed be born. While a general feeling of sympathy 'for Corvallis prevails t in connection with the location of the state agricul tural college, many men of judgment look on it as a matter for all time and tot for a few years, and realize that if the agricultural college was made a branch of the state university it could be run at half the expense and would be free from all the complications that now exist. They say the state" can well afford to surrender to Corvallis all the property it now has there, to be able to make a good start in the right direction. But the Btate- cannot sur render the property there, because, if if is. not, used far the purpose specified, trie land" reverts to h donors who paid for it.
