News Summary. Immense numbers of squirrels are destroying crops in portions of Union county this season. An exchange says a silver dollar is too big, a gold dollar too small, a pa per dollar too thin, and all too scarce. The wool crop this year is said to be extremely prolific. Sheepmen along Snake river report ten pounds a head as an average yield, which is very good indeed, but the price of wool is not so flattering. T The Walla Walla Journal reports that two of the three commissioners have determined upon Walla Walla as the meat desirable point for the location of the territorial penitentiary. The ques tion will be kept open, though until the loth of July. Farmers in Walla Walla valley have already began harvesting barley, and are unanimous in declaring a very large yield. The wheat harvest will begin in about two weeks, and it prom ises the largest yield of years. An important gold quartz discovery was made last week near Pine valley, Union county, the vein being three feet thick and traceable nearly 500 feet. The discoverer is making $50 a day with an ordinary hand mortar. Hop raisers aTe confident of a large yield this year, but are not so confidet t as to price. Many who are engaged in the business are of the opinion that the price paid this fall will not cover the cost of picking and drying. Information has been received that Mr. Will McConnel, formerly of Linn county, was kicked by a colt and killed at Mayville. Gilam county, on the 27th of May. The blow was received on the head and fixe, and broke in the skull, causing death after a few hours of in tense suffering. The New Orleans Times-Democrat says of the crop prospects in the South: "The reports from all four of our lead ing crops, cotton, sugar, rice and corn continue excellent, and more than ex ceilent, and are in remarkable contrast with last year in condition, promise At.:' juTces."" A gentleman who has recently trav eled all over Polk countv says that crops are looking especially well along the Dallas Monmouth road and between Perrydale and White's Station. He thinks that if this year proves a success ful one for farmers the future of the country is assured. Walla Walla Statesman: It is estima ted that there is now growing in Walla Walla county 90,000 acres of wheat; in Columbia couuty, 60,000; in Gar field and Assotin counties, 60,000; and in Whitman and Nez Perce counties, 60,000 more, and in Umatilla county 90,000. This makes a total of 300 000 acres, and this at an average of 3O bush els to the acre will give nine million bushels of wheat to be shipped from valley above Snake the Columbia river. Whatcom Reveille: Mr. D. E. Ri( e of Nooksack, dug new potatoes on May 3ptn tnat measured nve inches in cir cumference. On June 7th he dug tnree nuts, tne product made more than a sufficiency for one meal for a family of ten persons. Shirley, of Union, Oregon has sold 2,000 head of fine mixed ca tie to Dater & Co., of this city. The cousideration is at present unobtain able, but is believed to not fall below $20 per head. Mr. Shirley has also sold 200 fine two-year-old heifers to Donald McPhee on Pole creek. Con sideration in this sale is also unknown Hunter & Evens are receiving in in stallments 230 cars of Kansas and In dian Territory cattle, which are passing through Cheyenne at the rate of about three trains daily. They go to Rock Creek and thence are driven north The cattle will number something over 2,100 head. The cheese factory at Cove, Oregon, uses the milk of 120 cows, and will in crease the number to over 300 during the season. The daily yield of cheese will reach 600 pounds ere long. E. -Boreman brought to the banking house of J. W. Virtue last Wednesday a $3000 clean up from his placer claims, situated eight miles east of Ba ker city and near the Virtue mine. This is the result of a little over two weeks' run. h now seems to be settled that the O. R. & N. lines are to be leased to he Northern Pacific and Union Pacific. This will be fraught with important con sequences to the northwest, uregon and Portland will not suffer by it. Ashland Tidings: Some little excite ment is reported over new placer dig gings now being worked on Cottonwood creek, above Shattuck's place on the other side of the Siskiyous. It is said some fifty men have been at work there, some making good wages. rhe San Francisco Bulletin com plains that the Chinese are pouring into California in almost as great num bers as ever, notwithstanding the re strictive legislation. The Trimble brothers, of Rogue River were again arrested for violation of the law for protection of fish. A gentleman living about six miles from Dayton, missed a couple of his cows some time ago, and a dilligcnt search and notices in the county paper failed to bring them to light. Yester. day, however, while in the field, he no ticed a hole in one side of a pumpkin, and on getting a lantern and going in, he found the lost cows quietly eating pumpkin seeds and getting fat. The! hole in the fruit was caused by the rapid growth of the vines which had dragged it along over the ground for half a mile. Columbia Chrqnicle. Mrs. Hill and Mrs. De Souzer, mother and daughter, were drowned in the Umpqua, Douglas county, Wednes day of last week. They were crossing the river with a horse and buggy and entured into deep and swift water. The horse was drowned and the buggy washed down the stream. A letter from Murray says: The Cali fernia ditch is completed and the water will be into Dream gulch and on the hills sometime this week. The trestle vork for the flume across Butte creek is eighty-five feetShigh. The Po tosi and Beaver creek ditch is under finished by the middle of July. They have a fine open way on the line of the ditch, and have but little timber to bother them. The ditch from Eagle creek to the head of Dream gulch and McComber and Accident gulches is also being pushed forward to comple tion. The way is already cleared and graded, and the saw mill is on the ground ready foi work. It is to be mimed the whole distance, seven miles, and is said to be the best of all the ditch projects in the camp.
