(3) News Summary. The young fruit in Coos river or chards is being devoured by large flocks of pigeons. The construction of a military tele phone line from Portland to Vancouv er will be commence J in a short time. A colony of fitty persons is forming in East Tennessee for Eastern Oregon. They will leave for their new homes about June ist. The E. O. of Pendleton recently s'.ed a dead beat subscriber for $1.50, got judgement and made it cost the subscriber $50. The State Board of Education lias purchased the property no- used ar.d rented by the State Blind School, the amount being paid for it $3250. The Salem Statesman figures the population of that city at 6000, in clubing the prisoners at the Penitenti ary and the patients at the Asylum. Judge Deady's decision on the Hoult railroad bill sustains its princi ple features, but denies the right of the Legislature to absolutely fix rates. The body of Frank Rampy, who was drowned at the Harrisburg R. R. bridge on Sunday, April 12th, was found in the river nearly opposite Harrisbtirg last week. An application has been made to the department at Washington asking to have a postofnee established at the Indian school, at' Lake Labish, some four miles below Salem. The overland time between Portland and San Francisco, via the O. & C. R. R., has been shortened to two and one-half days with only 24 bours staging between Ashland and Delta. A pauper named Cole, aged 85, at tempted to kiii himself at the poor farm in Lir.n county by cutting his throat and severing -an artery in his thigh. Tiic wounds were not fatal Judge Deady has given instruction to the Receiver, Koehler, of the O. & R. R., that the Hoult bill is constitu tional and must be abided by. This fixes the rare of travel at 4 cents per mile on the railroads. A monster whale entered the Co lumbia Wednesday, and af.er crusin; around Astoria started out, but was stranded on Sand Island for an hour. The sea mammoth finally got afloat and went into deep water. The various transportation compa nies whose lines center in Portland uave tendered free transportation to the Iowa Press Association after its arrival here, for various excursions to different parts of the Northwest. The work of constructing the Port land and Willamette Valley Narrow Gauge Railway from Portland to Dun dee, will, it is said, be commenced in about six weeks. The right of way tor the road has about all been se cured. Since President Cleveland's inau guration the following appointments have been made for Oregon. Agent at Grand Rounde Indian Agency, 'William Galloway; Appraiser of Mer chandise, Portland, C. S. Schenck; Collector of Internal Revenue, John Whiteaker; Collector of Custom:;, As toria, John Hobson. There is an unusual amount of pros pecting for quartz ledges this Spring, -with what success later developements will tell, but even now some are re ported favorable. There i a growing faith that the future will develop many good ledges which will pay well, and add largely to the present wealth of Southern Oregon. Bids are now being made for the construction of the great Cascade tun nel of the Northern Pacific Rail Road, which will be one of the longest in the country. The length of the tunnel will be about 9,800 feet and the plan and machinery for constructing it will cost in the neighborhood of $100,000. The bids will be opened May 11. Harney valley, Grant county, is about 50 miles long and 40 miles wade, and the population numbers nearly 2,000. The principal industry ds Stock raising. There has been a small but steady immigration this spring, but 500 more people are ex pected to settle there before the ist of next July. The Seattle health officer reports eighteen deaths from natural causes in that city during the quarter ending April 30th, and adds: "This gives a rate of mortality for a population of Cheney, W. T., is excited over the discovery, within three miles of that city, of an immense deposit of carbon ates of lead, rich in silver. Men are flocking there in large numbers, and claims are being staked out for miles along a ledge twelve feet wide on the surface. An organization has been perfected at Independence to be known as the Polk County Stock Breeders Associa tion, which will aim to improve the breed of stock generallv. It will be incorporated with a capital stock of $2,500. Stephen Staats was elected President and W. H, Parry Secretary. An extremely rich strike equaling that in the famous Gold Hill times, has been made in McDonough & Kah ler's quartz ledge near Fort Lane. Free gold can be seen in large quanti ties, some of the ore appearing to be half gold. We are informed that there is a considerable amount of that quartz in sight, in which event the owners may consider themselves quite rich. Jacksonville Times. Advices from various portions of the country are to the effect that the frost last week was not as injurious as at first supposed, an 1 that there will be a considerable amount of fruit, though not as much as anticipated. Nearly even- portion of Jackson and Josephine counties suffered some, and in a few little fruit remains. The damage could have been much greater, how ever. Jacksonville Times. The roads between Salt Lake City and Snake river are represented as be ing lined with emigrant wagons. Some of the people are going to settle in Idaho, others in Montana and in Washington Territory and Oregon. One train consisting of five wagons and a well equipped outfit generally and representing as many families, stated that their destination was the Big Bend country on the Columbia. Tiie Indian school at Forrest Grove will graduate twenty six pupils in June who have been in attendance five vears. The advanced class will give a musical concert at the grove on next Wednesday evening, consisting of so los, duets, quartetts and choruses, in tersoerced with piano, violin and band music. The concert will be repeated in Salem on the 15th inst. All the pupils except those of the primary grade will be moved to Salem in about three weeks. Special Agent Dixon held a council last week with about 300 Umatilla Indians, in regard to throwing the res ervation open for settlement, as pro vided for in a bill introduced by Con gressman M. C. George. The Indians asked time to consider the matter, and one old chief on being requested to designate how long it would take him to make up his mind, replied about ten years. A wealthy old redskin named Pio, said that he had formerly been a good republican, but now con cluded he would go over and be a democrat, as this party, he thought, would do right as they were now in power, and would build houses all over the reservation. Pio seems to have a long head. The Astorian of the 7 th inst. says that a tremendous splashing in one of the fish traps near Ilwaco attracted the attention of men along the shore ilast Tuesday cvjning. Hastening to the trap they found one of the biggest sea lions ever seen in the Columbia riv;r. Procuring rifles, they fired at him. The first shot enraged the mon ster and he started in killing all the big salmon in the trap. So enraged was the phoca that he tore the fish to piec es, and not till seven balls had pierced him did the shaggy monster give up the ghost He was landed on the Ar gonaut and on the arrival of that ves sel yesterday morning he attracted considerable attention as he weighed between 800 and 900 pounds, and was "nearly as big as a cow." The Argo naut took the huge carcass up to Clif ton vesterday afternoon. it is hardly possible for him to recover. In fact we were informed late last eve ning that there was no hopes for him. This is a singular accident, and there are not many cases on record where men are goared to death by bulls. No one connected with the asylum is to blame for the accident. ADMINISTRATORS' NOTICE. He was in the convalescent ward, and was allowed the liberty to walk around the grounds. He got into the pasture between the asylum and peni tentiary, and his presence was not de sirable to a black-headed Jersey bull in the pasture.
