Mr. Chandler takes charge, is a much
nicer and more homogeneous ma
chine. It consists of eight nureaus,
viz Yards ad Docks, Navigation,
Ordnance, Provisions and Clothing.

The whole economy of the sheep'
farm is as perfect as intelligence
and industry can make it. A ton of
wool is worth 750 at 35 cents a
pound, or $500 at 25 cents. A ton
of wheal is worth about $32, and of

than wool. This is worth consider
ing, and shows how much better it
is to turn coru into wool than to

Bojtie River Beach Mine,
In 1853 gold was first disco vered
on the beach at the mouth of Rogue'
River by a party of men who came
tip from Crescent City in a whale
boat. Miners rushed in from Cre "
scent City, Port Orford and Rail-"
lolph, and in a short time the hither-"
to unknown shores wete doited with'
little villages ot log cabins, whero
the miners congregated for safety,
as the country was swaitning with'

ever, of the value of the precious

is sluiced by the ocean storms and'
tides it is still profitably worked'

ceivably finer than the beach sand,
was by rough sluices and blankets,
and drops in which were placed fronr

were accidentally discovered by a
miner at Cape Blanco, These copper
plates by constant use became brittlo
and broken, and were thrown away
