We welcome thee, Spring, from the tar, sunny south, With thy soft breezes wooing the flowers From their slumbers to gladden and brighten again Every nook in the grand, woodland Lowers. The sun smi'es a welcome and ttfHugh the far depths of the calm sky's cerulean bis beams Dance giadly and fleetly in scetiing doligbt To the music of merriest streams. The birds have returned and their soul-thrilling songs Swell melodiously out on the breeze. As gaily they flit liketne sunbeams, among The boughs of the blossoiuine trees. And joyfully through thy bright garland ot days All nature awakuis and smiles; And sunbeams and melody mirthfully flit Through the woodlands' bright, tlower-'broidersd aisles. Bright smiles wreath the lips of the youthful and fair. And the heart with new happiness thrills While viewing thy earliest, fresh-spriuging plants Which crown the rich valleys and hills. The invalid catches bright glimpses of thee From her couch to toe window close drawn, And wrtaths or delight crown her beautiiul brow As she welcomes thy sunlighted dawu. The aged and weary, forgetful of pain. Rejoice in the light of tny sun. And dream of a springtime of endless repose. When life's toilsome journey is done. Then welcome, thrice ivelcouic, thou beautiful Spring! Since thy coming aw kens delight Alike in the bosom of childhood and age. And gdds darkest pathways .vith light. ISM Past Lentkn Gaiett The Sole Survivor ofthk Lath Cauinkt A Secrktaut OF the Navt with A littooM .Mr. Teller's Task. (From our Regular Correspondent Washington, D. C. , April IS. Now thai Lent in over, Washing ton lias for a brief season resumed those social enlcrtaitnents from which society has had a short respite. The President has giveu one general rece.t ion, on which occasion the Wi.iic House was crowded beyond precedent, and ih a is saying a good deal, for tbe o!d mansion has been packed tic lore. 1 hero lias been some talk about building a new Presidential residence, 'but there is no prospect of this being done soon. 1 he present house is ol.J and lacoo venient in manv respects iust too good to tear down but not quite good enough to stand. There has been further debate on the tariff question during the week The subject l as been agitated, and it will not she'll unlit it has changed part' lines and frontiers. If all members who have speeches prepared on this question speak, the session will be protracted till August. There was a rumor yesterday that the Seeitstary of War Robert Lincoln would be removed a few days and a successor appointed, thus making President Arthur's Cal.inent entirely lew, but I have it from the best au horiiy the prc-nt Secretary wil remain, the solo survivor of Gar- eld's cabinet. air. Chandler's appearance in the Navy Department is regarded will some dread by the barnacles, toredos and rats that have had so much to lo in navigating the .M hulk to the d 1, and, if reports are true, be will soon r. organize the Navy Depart ment with a very stiff I room. Mr. Teller, the Secretary of the Interior, it is leporte.i, will also a a little spring cleaning, and more than one chief of llureau, with his little coterie nf dependents, is wishing that he had not btMfcg' on princes' lavors uu til he became too weak to hang at anything else. Mr. Teller is a man of ability and industry. He has ex-' perience as a lawyer and is especially familiar with land and min'tlg cases, pud the Indian question, all of which matters ar3 in charge ol the Depart ment ol the Interior which he has been appointed. The Department is an unwieldy conglomeration of in congruous pails. It comprises ti c Patent and the Pension Officers; the General Land Office; the Indian Bu reau of Education. The census and the Geological arvejr are both at tached to the Interior Department, as is also the Commissiottership ol all railioads that have been granted any loan or credit, or subsidy t lands or bonds by the United Slates. The Navy Department, of which Mr. Chandler takes charge, is a much nicer and more homogeneous ma chine. It consists of eight nureaus, viz Yards ad Docks, Navigation, Ordnance, Provisions and Clothing. M. dicine and Sursiery, Construction and Repair, Equipment an.l Recruit ing, ami Steam Engineeiirg. Some of these Bureaus have subordinat. offices, as, for instance, the chief of the Bureau of Navigation has con trol ot the Naval Observatory, the Nautical Almanac Office, and the Hydrographio Office, each of which employs quite a number of clerks and scientific specialists. The fair sex dcti'l hold all the curiosity in the world. A thing worth doing is worth do- ,. . .i i . .s.J: lag Well. A thing worm aavcrusmg is worth advertising well. A news paper worth advertising in once is worth making a contract with. It is a mistaken notion that a fine store in an eligible location, siinoun ded ty attractive signs, is a superior advertisement; for the experience of the most enterprising merchants is hat it pays better to spend less in rent and more in adverii-ing. Advertising is the pole that knocks ike persimmons. Don't be afraid to invest in pun ter's ink, lest y.mr sands of life be nearly run out. Frying to do business without ad vertising is like winking at a pretty srirl through a pair of green goggles. You may know what you are doing, but nobody else does. The enterprising advertiser proves that he tuidersiands how to buy, be cause in advertising he knows how to sell. Boead i the staff of human life, and advertising is the staff of business. A simp'e card may profitably stand years without change, but a sensa tional advertisement should be changed as ollen as you can get the printer to do it. A hcavv advertisement once is more than quadrupled in value by a small card, published for a few mouths after, giving your address. You can't eat enough in a week to last you a year, and you can't adver tise on that plan either. Now is the time to think about ad veitising, and reflection should be followed by judicious action. To rnalie a man realize an idea as you realize it is what is necessary to make him undersland his needs. Ad veriisemeiits should aim to place a matter so clearly before the public that they see it as ckarly as the ad vertiser does. The rams are closely examined as to their fleece-bearing properties, and1 all but the very best are eold otT, The whole economy of the sheep' farm is as perfect as intelligence and industry can make it. A ton of wool is worth 750 at 35 cents a pound, or $500 at 25 cents. A ton of wheal is worth about $32, and of cjt-n about $10. The freight is about the same for each, and is thus' twenty-five times more "for wheat, and nearly fifty times more tor coru than wool. This is worth consider ing, and shows how much better it is to turn coru into wool than to sell it. Ledger. Bojtie River Beach Mine, In 1853 gold was first disco vered on the beach at the mouth of Rogue' River by a party of men who came tip from Crescent City in a whale boat. Miners rushed in from Cre " scent City, Port Orford and Rail-" lolph, and in a short time the hither-" to unknown shores wete doited with' little villages ot log cabins, whero the miners congregated for safety, as the country was swaitning with' Indians who nutlit have annihilated thetii were they less discreet. The" mine extended along the beach for twelve mi'es on each side ot Roguo' liiver, and proved to W the most' important beach mines ever found,' and have well merited the name of "Gold Beach." No estimate, how ever, of the value of the precious metal extracted can be more than.' widely guessed al, but hundreds of thousands is the sum; nor is the beach' yet "worked out;" but whenever it is sluiced by the ocean storms and' tides it is still profitably worked' sometimes with results equal to the first,. as if the gold were cast up I rets the sea. The primitive method of saving this gold, which is incon ceivably finer than the beach sand, was by rough sluices and blankets, and drops in which were placed fronr fifty to one hundred pounds ot quick stiver. But thes were soon super-" seded byjgalvanized copper plates, thc preperalion and use of which were accidentally discovered by a miner at Cape Blanco, These copper plates by constant use became brittlo and broken, and were thrown away by the wholesale for several years, when it was discovered that they were worth several dollars per pouttd lor the gold that had "worked into them." Cow Port Orford Post.- Fair Flay for tic Bog. If our forefathers had studied the hog with any closeness we would have been spared the sayings ol: "Selfish as a bog," "hungry as- a pig," "he eats like a regular hog," etc. To begin with, the hog is n t a selfidi creature. Two hogs will agree about as well as two men, and a hog who was taken aiong on a steamboat excursion would have cause to say to his porkers: "You y.e like men and women." The hog is not a huntrry animal. Give him three square meals a tlay, and lie is content, while most men must chew, smoke astid nibble between meals jnrl have a lunch at bedtime. To "net like a hog" would bo to mind otit's own imsiness, go to bed early. and be satisfied Willi the situation. I'he hog is not a liar, hypocrite or dead beat. He acts on the square, s alwavs represented, and in his disposition hae few equals in the human race. He has been misunder stood and abused, and it is-time thai his friends rallied to give him fair l,ay. lhcoma Ledger.
