Rumors are afloat that the new town of Yaquiua will be permanently located while Mr. Hoa.tr is here. Mr. Stratford, in the employ of the R. R. company, met with the misfortune to break three of his ribs by falling from the wharf la3t week. Dr. W. H. Rich was itnmeiliately called ana made the unfortunate as comfortable as a man could lie with three broken ribs. He is getting along nicely and will soon be around again. Master Arthur StCIair delivered a very appropriate valedictory; the anthem by Mrs, Addi Ion's class was a fine closing piece. The Sunday school passed a unanimous vote of thanks to the public for theii generous patronage, and express a desire to contrib ute to their entertainment agaiu in the future. Another Fire at Junction. About eleven o clock last Monday night a warehouse caught fire :.t Junction City. 1'he ii lines spread until it ciught another .v-rehoUsc adjoining. Both houses were entirely consumed. One of them contained nothing of importance. The othei one had iu it at the time of the fire about 1630 bush els of wheat. One house was insured and on the other there was no insurance. A Battens. The Sunday School concert at the Evan gelical' church last Saturday nie;ht was a grand success both socially and financially. The house was comfortably full, and a care fully prepared programme was well carried out. The parts executed by both large and small were so generally well rendered, that particular mention of any is hardly justifi a de tjwar.t the rest. We will say, however, that the maimer in which several songs were rendered by numerous little girls, certain'y promises a vocal talent which will sustain the present reputation of our city in the future ami they deserve encouragement. Master Freddie Bowersox, the youngest participant, recited "The " Two Kittens." with perhaps less embarrassment than some of the older ones and was appropriately applauded. Among tha larger ones, the solos and cjuartetts were well rendered, as also was a reading by Sliss Mary Porter, "Strictly Confidential," a duet by Misses : Spencer and Gingles was well performed j and highly pleased the audience ;" "Geths- lane," a recitation by Miss Christie Wil- i lard, w as the finest piece in the programme, ! and exceedingly well rendered; there seemed I to be a marked absence of all effort on Miss . The Presbytery of Oregon, in connection with the Synod of Columbia, mot on the 2 1st inst., in the Presbyterian church at Rosebtirg, and was opened with a sermon by the retiring Moderator, Rev. II. P. Dunning. The Presbytery was then called to order, and after the roll had been cillcd and minutes of the fall meeting read, Rev. J.-N. Milligan, of Astoria, was elected Moderator for the ensuing ecclesiastical year and Elder Alber, of Salem, was chosen temporary clerk. Rev. E. N. Gondii ten dered his resignation as stated clerk which was accepted and Rev. J. N. Miliigan elect ed to fill the vacancy, Rev. K. N. Condit being chosen acting state ! clerk until the expiration of Mr. Milligau's term as Mod erator. Rev. H. P. Dunning, pastor of Corvallis church, tendered his resignation of his charge and asked Presbytery for a dissolution of the pastoral relation with sail church. Hloaroe Items. The weather is fine, and the farmers are in proving the time sowing their grain. Another sale of real estate last week. The reading club gave another of their interesting entertainments last evening, the debate was lively and interesting and those present regaled themselves, at recc33, on ea'ce and apples provided by the lady mem bers who are ever on the alert to make interesting meetings still me-re interesting The J.Ionroe drug store is bound to keep pace with the other business houses of the town, and is getting in a new end large stock of drugs, oils, paints, patent medi cines, and novelties. One of Benton county's old citizens, Dow Gilbert, was buried at a neighboring grave yard last Monday. He died of pneumonia, at the residence of his son George Gilbert near Eugene in Lane Co. Monroe can boast of two as good boot and shoe shops as the county affords. They turn out some of the very finest of work in their line. Dr. Livingstone (a nephew of the great African explorer), who has been sojourning with us for the past three mouths, packed up his valise last Saturday and went to Portlaud to meet his family, who are on the way to this city. They hail from Kan sas, a land noted for grasshoppers and chinch bugs. We are informed by some of the young bloods of this place that Monroe has a night watch, anil if the experience of our neighboring city, viz. Junction, is any criter ion to go by, we need such a person in order to insure safety against tire. G. M. Shaffer has sole! hi3 residence in Monroe to Mrs. Rebecca Reader who will move in tewn next fall. Mr. Shaffer is going to Cab, the land of drouths. Don Rialto. Mr. W. CoYI.K, who formerly lived in this county near Monroe, died recently fro m the effects of an abscess upon the bowels, at his home about twelve miles irom East Portland. Mr. Coyle was an early settler of this county and to our certain knowledge was universally respected and beloved by his neighbors ami acquaintances. The community in which he lived has lost one whose place will ba difficult to fill. At the time of his death he must have been about 55 years of age. Lokknzo Dow Gii.p.ept, who settled on his donation claim about 5 miles west of Monroe in this county in the year 1847 died last Sunday from the effects of a lingering attack of typhoid fever, at the residence of his son near. Eugene City, Lane Co., Oregon. At ths time of his death lie was seventy years of age, was the father of a large fam ily of children, most of whom together with his aged wife survive bi n. Our ac quaintance with the rleceaced for many years learnc I ns of his true character. He was universally and highly esteemed by all who knew him and against whom nothing could be said contrary to his being the highest type of a christian gentleman. 1 A Report from Lower Alsca. Gzo. M. Starr arrived in town from near the sea shore in lower Alsea Valley. He reports roads in a very bad condition be tween here aud there aud the snow about eighteen inches deep on this side of the mountains.
