The railroad boss sees, at tiiinks ho sees, his "controlling inter est" recognized and mbinitted to all rfftttrnd. His dispatches cannot wait 6r the post: he marten to the wires :ind parodies Caesars bulletin, "I came T saw, I co-iquered." From hu ?.int of view these tactics are rijihl enough. There are some "policies" which onaist of noise, pomp and glitter. History shows many an instance. "What came of all such? Just this lifter a little while there were no more worlds to conquer, and the men who furnished the army to the con queror began to enquire, "who is the better for all this?" As in the morn- inir after thfi iiirhl's debauch, sober reflection and aching heads compel attention to the empty pockets and ruined health. Then comes lassitude mid d.-iee.fion: ami the real cost of all the "nolie.v" is brought home to B j the people who have in effect paid for all of it. Under the "control of Mr. Villard all the capital that can .be begged, borrowed or obtained is being poured in frill strea ns here and there, where ever a channel can be found or made for it. Is there an ocean steamship company? Oh, buy it. Is there a railroad in existence, broad or nar row? Oh, buy it. Is there a coal mine or an iron mine? Oh, buy it. Is there a big country, mostly bar ren, bnt with good spots in it? Build a railroa 1 to it. Is there a river gorge hemmed in with precipices? Build a railroad through it. Is there a moun tain chain in the way? Then tunnel it. Is there a huge swamp that might do for a depot grounds if it were twenty-five feet higher? Th?n fill it. Is there a trails continental line that comes near? Then "control" it. Is there- a rival in the field ma king a broad or narrow guage? Then buy him or crush him. Is there a grain of independence and self help growing anywhere in the stale? Then down with it, level it all. But where is all the money to come from for all this costs? "Blind pool" it, and trust to-luck to show some thing for it when "pay day comes. But "blind pooling" won't go on foi ever, and what then? What then?-; Why, after ns the deluge-: Who cares? This is first rate fur for King Stork. But how about the poor froga. lib can take to his wings and be off when he is full, but the poor things have to s'ay on and live in their marsh. Mr. Taxpayer I thought to not no tice you any more, but thinking a lit tle advice would be good for you, I will volunteer a little. In the first place it lying and meddling with other people's bnsinesA that does not affect you at all, has become chronic with you, atteud some good Sabbath school, and if you have none in your neighborhood, come to rhtlomath and there will be an effort made to reform you. If it can not bo done. then do the best thing you can, atid don't be brazing around under an as samed name, trying to leave the im pression on the minds of the public that a terrible injustice is bning done them. That lie that yon put in your first article 1 think would apply to yon in the same sense that it did in the fable of the apples. So Taxpay er I will drop yon with the hope that yonr children will .not follow in the foot steps of their sire, and so to writing articles for a newspaper. If your name has not already been en tered on the delinquent poll tax list, that you will get a job from some tax payer and have your dollar ready when the assessor comes around and if you want to criticise my record alter 1 make one will be the proper tune to-do that. This season is very good one for wild oats. The yield of wheal and oats will be large, but I think wheat will be far below an average. Having exam ined a field-o seventy-five acres east of the station, my judgment is that there will be less than half a crop of wheat. There mc some fields thai look fine. Among them is Mr. Wm. Locke's and Mr. Benson's. Money is plenty. There is some money scat tered here that dunes from old En gland, it is presumed!- I have heard no complaint amoifg the merchants i his burg, and i h-i elore conclude thai business is lively; Sheep shearing ha just commenc ed. A flock of one ntKtorr was clipped here last week that averaged seven pounds of wool pen head. The people, of course, are an xioutdy awaiting the railroad. It seems as though this must bt- come a harbor of importance, some one in tfiv near future. The country here rivals the Willamette Valley in richness of so3, and for a graamg country surpasses anything in Oregon. The cattle and sheep raised am the Bay are fat and- make exceedingly lender meat. This would be an ex cellent place tor goats, as they would haye an extensive range. The coast is more sheltered than in other places, and on that a count wi'I be a desirable loca tion for those who wish to live near the-sea shore. s - s - . Campers are coming in great num bers, as the roads are good and the season fairly commenced. The little dau-jhter of Mr. Holt, of Jefi' rson, died here of membranous croup this week and was taken' to Jefferson for buriaL Mr Wilson, one of the guests of the Irvin House, while rambling on the beach a tew days since, secured a cuttle fish which is the subject of much curiosity, and is a nice speci men. 0 Mrs. R. May 18th, 188K b oken in four places while logging. That seems to be an unfottunate bus iness, for Mr. Wm. MiV-key recently cut his foot quite sverely. He bears his t miM rary release from work with martyr-like patience. His sympa thizing friends hope for his speedy re covery. Bnt we challenge any school in Benton county to show a better rec ord than that made by the Toledo school on last Friday morning. One of the scholars observed a deer, pur sued by a dog. rn the other side of Uepot sloagh. Un permission hein given, four small boys, the eldest barely thirteen, rowed across the bay, and after wading through mud and falling into innumerable tide holes, reached the scene of conflict. The youngest, Oliver Altree, aged eleven, killed the deer with a blow from a mattock, while the others cut its throat with their pocket knives. In the meantime four ot the yonngei girls, fearing lest the boys would let the deer go, crossed the bay in a leaky boat by the use of a padd ", a hoard six inches long, and their hands, but reached the shore a mo ment too late. The rest of the school rowed around to meet the procession with the deer. This proceeding took up only twenty minutes, after which the school was ready to resume their grammar and arithmetic lessons, al though " We kitted a deer" was writr ten on every countenance.
