Last Saturday the r-giilar train on its arriral received or ders to return to Portland as an extra to haul in cars of wheat. They left at 3:15 P. v. By .tremendous exertions the "train' was stopped. The -front trucks of the engine only getting off the track. A few , -fret ahead was a cattle gtiard and a huge pile of wood, Into which, but for timely warning, the train would have dashed, a terrible wreck with more or lea lorn of life. Near8t..Jo-thte train-rushed upon a long high bridge. Almost in the center of the bridve were th re little children. To stop the train was impossible, and nothing but , the nerve of the brave little fellows could save their lives. They however got clear of the track, and crouching down on the frame of the bridge, their .little arms cling ing to the huge tisssiS, the-train passed on and the plucky little ones escaped unhurt. Kiger, of this city bis wife requested -him to accompany her to a. small card party at the Occidental ho tel, after arriving at the hotel, Mrs. K. re ' ' quested her husband to. go down street on au r errand for her, sad on his return the parlors , were filled to their utmost capacity with friends whom Mrs. Kiger had invited to be . present at the party. ' . It was a complete surprise to lfnbe who had expected to meet only half dozen friends and found the num ber increased t about seventy. The chief auHisewcnt of the eveniug was dancing for which the dining room of the Occidental is - very appropriate. After the guests had all assembled. J. R, Bryson -with appropriate remarks on be half of several of Mr. Kiger friends, present- ed him with a handsome and expensive ring. -The supper-served at midnight was excelent and altogether, the party was to Mr. K. a perfect surprise, and to the guests, a very pleasaut occasion. Fob Portland. The 2nd Brigade Band will go to Portland oa the coming .4th of July to blow for the celebration at that place; We are informed that arrangements have been made for a special train from this city to Portland on that day at half fare rates leaving here at 5 a. M. The contract I price for the band on that occasion is $250. They' will furnish 16 man, and are the boas b&ad of the Willamette Valley by the uni versai-verdiet of' eirery one who hears them Ccmio.rrr. Mr. John A. Wrenn, of Linn County, reports to as a natural curiosity in a chicken hatched on his farm that has f oar perfectly formed legs and feet, the surplus two being just in front of the natural ones. At last accounts it - was- living and doing well. The Yaquina road is reported in good con dition. C C. Cherry of Albany was in the Wednesday. Grandpa's birth-day to-night at Hamilton's opera house. Give the Presbyterian Sabbath school benefit to-night. Go early to the concert or you will be un able to get seats. The neatest thine in the new style bon nets is a pretty face. Miss Agie McCornick, of Linn county, spent last Sabbath in this city. Every body and his whole family should attend the concert, this evening. Fred. H. Francis, of King's Valley spent several days in the city this week. The roads are once more in good condition and buggy riding once more a luxury. If you want to borrow money on yoar farm, or sell it, call on Bryson ft Young, Geo. W. Belt Esq., of Independence threw himself into our sanctum Wednesday. About this time the prudent man hunts un his lawn mower and paints it for next r - year. Gen. Joseph Lane and Col. J. W. Xes- mith crossed the bar at Yaquina bay in a canoe in 1849. Don't feel bad over the waste of cigar ends. Most of them are picked up and us ed for cigarettes. Mr. and "Mrs. Vance, Mrs. Martin and Miss Bash of Monmouth, were - visiting friends in this city yesterday. We are informed that the remains of an Indian were exhumed in the yard of the Ocean house at Newport last week. Will Webber informs us that Capt Ste vens has new potatoes large ennuch for table grown in his garden on the x aquma and that all other vegetables are as far advanced. The delinquent list returned by the sher iff of Umatilla county, to the County Court at its last term, amounts to only $4,265 29. He reports the amount of $840,202 92 col lected.' KING'S VALLEY- Editor Gazette. At present this valley is prosperous, happy and beautiful. We have better grass, better wheat and oats, and better children than before, for many a long day. The nice weather and warm rains have brought every thing that grows, almost to perfection. Even some of the children have sprouted. The late rains have raised the ters of the Luckamute sufficient to enable Frantz ft Connor to bring down all their saw-logs. They (Frantz ft Connor, not the logs) are jubilant and can now furnish plenty of good lumber to all their' customers. SClciDE. lhe following are the particu lars of a suacide at Cottage Grove, Lane Co. committed last Sunday, Miss Threft, a girl aged 15 years, daughter of Mr. Peter Thrift of Cottage Grove, committed suicide by taking a doce of strychnine. It seems that the girl wanted to go ont with a strawberry mg party, but for some reason her parents with held their consent. The girl took the matter very greatly to heart, so much so that she determined to destroy herself. Procuring, unnoticed, some strychnine, she took a large dose, The fatal drug soon began its "work, throwing the girl into con vulsions. Dr. H. Wright was hastily sum moned, but arrived too late to be of service. The girl, after experiencing the most horri ble sufferings, expires The only possible reason to be assigned for the fearful deed was the disappointment felt in not being permitted to go and to spite her parents A Singular Accident. Samuel A. Will aged 14 years, a son of H. S. Will f Cw. ,L All T-i A Bwu, maya um Aiuanv iemocrai. was out hunting the other day, and his rifle having been loaded for some time he fired at a mark, .wishing to' reload, and in the act dropped his patching, which he stooped down to pick up. The powder horn' was stili unstopped, and the old patch whieh had jnst been shot had taken fire and was lying on the ground, still burning, Some powder run from the horn, which, contained a quar ter of a pound, and came in contact with the burning pitch. The whole exploded, and the boy lay senseless on the ground from 12 o'clock, m., until 3 r. m. He has recovered from the shock and sustained no. serious damage, except being pretty badly burned. of ( Loadinc ron T&r.A-sp,Xgx, ; WeTls o' this city, has chartered the British bark "Couutyr oi Ayr" with a capacity for thirty ihousaiut bushels of wbeit, and on Wedne -;1ayacctn1eTi wife, Mr. Wells 'iSiji, went to Portland to superintend the loading nt I of the 'vessel with wheat for the Enlvsh market." . The charter price paid by Mr. Wells is 80 shillings per ton. The Bark will sail in about ten days. This is the second vessel Mr. Wells has loaded for the English market for the present season. Cabf Pond. Within the last year or two much attention has been paid to the culture of German carp in this vaUey. Capt. John Harlow, at Troutdale has the finest series of lakes on the Pacific Coast, and they have been stocked with trout and carp. At Eu irene City no less than five cam ponds have been constructed and stocked with these highly prized food fish in this vacinity; if they increase as fast as is expected, these fish will be in the market in two years. Graham, Hamilton ft Co. have now in stock the new school books adopted by the Board of Education, for the use of the pub lic schools and will seU them at the intro ductory and exchange prices. 3 The Willamette Presbytery of Cumber land Presbyterian church stands adjourned to meet at Brownsville, Linn County Oregon on Thursday, next proceeding the 4th Sab bath in May A. D., 1881, at four o'clock P. M. E. B. Hamilton, of the Sacramento Bank, Sacramento, Cel., was in Corvallis Wednes day, and favored our office with a call He is traveling through Oregon, and expresses himself very much pleased with the coun- try' Will. S. Webber who has been over to the Bay for some time past, came out on hurt Tuesday en-route for the upper Colum bia where be will be employed during the summer on the engineer corps of the O. R. ftN.Co. An enormous cougur reported to be at least twelve feet from "tip to tip" has made its appearance in the neighborhood of Monroe recently. Mr. W. C. Woodcock, who saw thefanimal soys it looked as big as a horse or wards to that effect. . Jos. R. K. Irvin, mine host of the Ocean House at Newport, is in the city and favored us with a call this week. Joe re ports every thing fiotsrahing at the Bay and the prospects for a lively season unusually promising. Dundee, a new railroad town on the nar row gauge, is to be made a place of import ance. Mr. Reid intends building tbe car shape of the narrow gauge there and a fine hotel wiB be finished by Jane. Dundee is situated in Yamhill county, 4 miles from Dayton and 36 miles from Portland. Reduction in Rates. By the kindness L. G. Kline ft Co., agent for Well's Far go ft Co's Express, In thiscity, we have been furnished with the comparative rates of packages sent to or from San Francisco by mail and express to wit: By mail 2 lbs 32 cts; lbs 48 cts. ; 4 lbs 64 cts; 5 lts 80 cts; and these packages would be sent by express for 25cts. in addition to this, the express com pany is responsible for loss of or damage to any goods shiped through them, all of which is favorable to the Express Co. and persons desiring to forward packages by mail will do well to remember this. Fireman's Picnic. The Fire Department will give a picnic and ball for the benefit of Monumental Engine Co., 2, on the 31st of this month. The picnic will be in the Court House yard. A general invitation has been extended to all the fire departments in the state, and doubtless many from our neigh boring cities will be present. The ball in the evening will be at Hamilton's hall and a good time is anticipated. See ad. in anoth er column. Fire Alarm. Last Saturday afternoon, about 5:30 o'clock, the fire alarm sounded sad firemen, engines and trucks were soon in a full run up Third street, hut alas, be fore the brave fire boys could set to the scene of action, some one threw a bucket of water on the burning roof and extinguished the flames. The fire was at the house of Mrs. George Montelth, and originated from a dtfective flue. Dwelling House Burned. Last Satur day afternoon the dwelling house of George Sholts two miles East of Monroe, in this county, was burned to the ground, and . a considerable portion of the furnitnre and the clothing of the family being destroyed, loss about $2,500, no insurance. Tbe fire orig inated from burning straw in the fire place, the flames running ont of the top of the chimney and caught in the roof. Gee. H. Rycraft. of Alsea, was in the city yesterday. He tells us that he has been a ereen backer for several years and done all in his power to pay off the national debt in paper, but failing in that effort, he has discovered a gold-bearing quarts lead m Alsea valley and proposes to take out enough of the solid metal to meet the present obli gations of Uncle Samuel, although this s rather an extravagant expression, yet from specimens produced the quartz is undoubt edly rich in the precious metal. Attempted Escape. The prisoners now confined in the county jail at boldened by their former affecting their escape last Wednesday night. Through the assistance of some one outside th i-y obtained a saw, and succeeded in break ing and sawing off their shackels, and had almost got into the cell through which they escaped before, when daylight overtook them and they were detected. Communications from every part of the county, at the Gazette office. DIED. Died. In this city, on Sunday, May 1st 1881, Edmoad Marsh. Mr. Marsh was born in what was then Lucern; but mv Wyoming county, Pa, on the 9th day of June, 1818, where he resided until manhood. In 1845, ia company with his brother-in-law. the late J. C. Avery, he came to Oregon and settled in this county. where he has continuously resided until his death. Mr. Marsh was never married but made his home with his sister, Mrs. Avery, at whose house he died. He was too well known in this community to need favorable comment at our bands, further than to say that he died as be lived, an. upright man. respected by all who knew biro. Hie sick- was of short duration, lasting only about two weeks,, r Mr. Marsh was the first man who ever carried the United States mail through the Willainmette vaTJey. Commencing in 1851 he continued in that business for nearly ten years, and waa the friend of many of the early pioneers of southern Oregon who al ways expected to see him en his regular day and the weather was never so bad or the waters so high that he did. not come, thus evincing the indomitable perseverance that always characterized the man. At his residence near county, April 30th, 1881, Monroe, in this H. C. Backing- Mr. Buckingham ''was born in Chenago, New York, on the 1 5th day of March, 1812, He came to Oregon in 1847, and in 1850 settled on the laud in Benton county on which he died, He leaves a wife and family suid large circle of friends who mourn his departure. He was a prominent member of society, umveraaBy respected by all who knew him, a good citizen, an upright man and a consistent christian; More can not be In Match, 18S0, as stricken witi. paralysis and never afterwards recovered usual health, and about three weeas before hie death was taken worse and grad ually passed to the unknown realities of the other world.
