Next Monday will bs the day for the regular city election in this city at which time all the city officers will be elected except two councilmen. This election is one of great importance to the tax ptyers of the city, and esper.ially'so in the election of councilmen, in whose hands the entire financial machinery of the city will be entrusted. There will be no polities in the m.ttt ;r and no man will have ay excuse for voting for any but the best men. We have heard the following names mentioned as probable candidates from the first ward: Prof. B. J. Hawthorne, W. C. Crawford, W. H. Goldson, R. F. Baker, R. C. Kiger and John Huffman. Second ward: M. 8. Woodcock, Zeplin Job, C. P. Blair, and Phillip Phile. Third ward: John H. wts and John R. Rowland. From the candidates are to be selected, for the first ward, three ; 2d and 3d two councilmen each. These gentlemen are all well known to the voters of the city and we make no discoiminatiou. For the various other offi ces we have already mentioned most of them heretofore. So far as reported to us they are as follows: For Mayor, J. R. Brvson; Recorder, E. Holgate and F. H. Sawtell. Treasurer, Wm. Groves and T. J. Buford. For city Marshal. A. It Pygall, M. H. Ball and It. N. Baker, all of whom are well known and each of weom have their friends who will interest themselves to secure the ejection of their favorite candidate. LOCAL NOTES Will Bro's. County Court next week. City election next Monday. Pic nics will be ripe next month. Rev. J. A. Hanna went to Engene City this week. Considerable interest is being taken in the pending city election. T. J. Buford informs us that he expects to keep the city treasurers office at his news depot for the next year. Corvallis has a new fire company, and Big Six will once more be placedlon the list as an active fire engine. Good. Don't fail to save a quarter boys, to pay your admission to the cbildrens' concert. A rich treat is in store for you. The farmers are almost through planting their spring crops and the prospects for an abundant harvest are better than any pre vious year for several years past. We have had the privelege of seeing the programme of the Sunday School concert to be given soon, notice of which is given in an other column, aud we heartily endorse tbe same. M. S. Woodcock and Zeph Job are candi dates for Councilmen in the Second Ward. They are both successful busieess men and tax-payers, and just such men as should hava the care of the city interests, Fred Sawtell is a candidate for city' Re corder, and if elected, will make an able and efficient officer. He is an industrious pains-taking business man and such men always make good public officers. The fashionable spring bonnet of 1881 is to be profusely decorated with flowers, and provided in the rear with a fire-escape, so that the wearer's friends can climb to the top and see the trimmings. When one reads the weather telegrams from the East, telling of severe snow storms and cold, blustering weateer, and compares it with the pleasant, balmy days we are ex periencing here, one forgets all about the pattering rain that fell last winter. KOUO, 'imminent lawyer in Astoria, was shot and instantly killed in his office on last Monday afternoon. The supposed assassin being on? J. C. Robeson, who was seen to enter the office of the deceased on'y a few mo ments hofore the fatal ihot was heard, and who has on various occasions threatened to be revenged on the deceased for some imag inary wrong growing out of litigation be tween the said Robeson and a former part ner named Williams, Robb having been connsel for Williams. Robeson was instant ly arrested and is now in jail at Astoria, with strong cl in of circumstantial evi dence against bim. The last man in the world thll we would have expected to hear of being assassinated was Mr. Robb. We have known him for years as a kind, pleas ant and highly honorable gentleman, never engaging in personal quarrels or unseemly difficulties. He waa universally respected' in the community where he resided as a 'good man and a pare citizen. His aged parents reside about five miles from this city iti Linn county, where tbe deceased had many other friends and relative to whom tbe aad news of his untimely death will coma with the keenest pangs of sorrow Mr Robb was a member of the ancient order f United Work in gmen under the direction of which order his funeral was conducted. Witham, aged. 8, on arrising last Friday morning, went near the fire-place wnen her night clothes took fire and before the flames were extinguished, crisped the back part of tbe body from feet to neck making a very painful and extensive burn.
