In November, 1878, Sol King, Sheriff of this county, re ceived a telegram directing him' to look out for and arrest a man charged with larceny in a dwelling house in Polk county, giving a particular description of the man. Mr King gave the telegram to W. T. Huffman, who was then the City Marshal of this city. A short time afterwards Mr. Huffman fonni a man filling the description and arrested him and put him in jail, keeping him there from Saturday until Monday, when the Polk county officer came up and informed Mr. H. that he had the wron' man. The person arrested was John Mahar, who was st that time and ever since has been a resi dent of this county. About two years after this occurred Mr Mahar concluded that he hid beem considerable damaged by this in carcoraunn, ana mac snentt King was somewhat to blame in the matter, having as Mahar claimed, told Huffman to lock him up, and an action Was commenced against King and Huffman for damages, fix nig the smmnt at 2000. The case against King was tried at the last term of court and the jury disagreed. It was re-tried this week resulting in a verdict for the plff. for one dollar. This verdiot being less than 950, the plaintiff- will have to pay the cost of the proceeding. Temperance Society. Ameeting of the Union Temperance Society was held at the Evangelical Church last Man liy evening After an address by Rev. J. B wersox, on the subject of Tennerancs, a committee Re port was read by Dr. Johnston recommud- ing the election of the following officers for the ensuing year, which wa? adopted and the following declared elected: Pres. Rev. S. A. Starr; Vice Pre Rev. Biwersox, Dunning, McFarland, Hanna, and Davidson; Sec, E. Woodward; Ass't Sec. J. W. William Executive Com. E Allen, W. Nash and Lady, H. P. Dunning, J. Biwersox, Dr. Baylfey, J. Emery. Com. on music, W. E. Yates, S. A. Starr, V, Brock; Treas. Mrs H. E. Johnston. It was also on motion agreed that for the present the meetings should be held at the Evangel ical church every two weeks. It is also de. ired of the Executive Com. to meet at Dr. Johnston 'a office next Saturday, April 2nd at 2 oelock P. M. to arrange for programme of Exercises for the next meeting which will be held Monday evening. April. 11th. Eighty-Six. The satarical drama enti tled "The spirit of '86" was performed at the Opera Honse last Wednesday evening by an amateur company consisting of Dr. F. A. Vincent and wife, F. H. Sawtell and wife, Mrs. F. M. Johnson and Miss Becca Vincent. Space forbids the lengthy comments we would like to give of the performance and will only say all did welL Yet we cannot forbear mentioning that Mrs. Johnsons sing ing was excellent and called forth some very complimentary mention in our neighborhood, wtiile Miss Becca Vincent sustained her part so perfectly in every respect as to merit more than a passing notice. W - uur oia and valued friend, Jacob L Halter, after a long and painful illness, died at his residence in Albany last Friday. The beautiful sunshiny weather now pre vailing in this valley has a very beneficial effect upon the health of the people. The many cases of bad sold, with whieh this community has been enacted for a long time, are gradually diminishing under the influ ence of the balmy spring weather. The mania of walking on stats, so much indulged in of late by the youth of Corvallis. is threatened to be superseded by that of baseball. Witham wuo was some time since appointed sheep inspector for Benton coanty by the County Court, requests us to announce that he did not and will not accept the appointment. This leaves the County without an Inspec tor and the matter should be looked after by the County Court, as it leaves sheep owners who desire to move their sheep from the county in an unfortunate condition as they are required by the law to have a permit irom that office before moving them.
