FOR THE NEW YEAR.
On the 1st of January next the Corvallis
Gazette proposes to issue a special donble
number of the paper. It will contain a
general review and history of the year 1S80
political, literary and artistic ; also a
general description of Benton county with
notices of its agriculture, .manufactures,
towns and villages, religions and education
al advantages. To make this as complete
as is wished our readers and correspondents
are invited to assist.
We shall be" very glad to be furnished
with notices of the different religious com
munities, their statistics, their charitable
contributions, their special religious efforts.
We shall ask for similar favors from our
friends connected with the di Terent educa
tional institutions of the county. We in
tend to publish also an article on improved
farming with hints to farmers.
A large e.lition will te published, for
which arrangements are now being made. "
Advertisers desiring to take advantage of
this special edition will be kind enough to
communicate with us at once.
Nimuoiw to the Front. The hunt of
the season will come off next Tuesday, the
21st inst. , under the auspices of the Cor
vallis Sporting Club. The following .-.re the
arrangements for the hunt of Tuesday : An
invitation is respectfully extended to the
members of the Albany club, the Philomath
boys, Monroe lioys, and the boys of Wm.
Bakers point, Linn county, and all others
who desire a pleasant time, are invited to
participate. All those who expect to take
part in the hunt will forward their names
to T. J. Bufonl, chairman of committee of
arrangements, by 12 m, Dec.' 20th, 1880.
Names presented after that time will be re
jected. A committee will be appointed at
each of the places herein referred to, also at
Corvallis, to count the game. All game to
be presented to the respective committees
by 8:30 P. M., Tuesday the parties produc
ing game shall do so in person and not by
proxy. All persons are put on thyir honor
that no game offered for count has been
killed prior to 1 a. m. of Tuesday the 21st
inst. The respective local committees will
forward to J. R. Bayley, chairman of ex.
committee. Corvallis, by Wednesday, the
22d inst., the tally of all parties participat
ing in the hunt. A grand dinner will be
piven at the Vincent House. Corvallis, at
2.30 p. m.. Thursday, the 23d inst., to be
paid for by the loosing side. The Captains
are Wallace Baldwin and Oeo. M. Gerhard.
Each party choosen from the lists famished

Monday evening. Dee. 20th. No member

Presbyterian Sociable. On the even
ing of the 10th ult., a few friends and
members of the congregation, assembled in
the cosy parlor of the Presbyterian parson
age. Though the rain came down in tor
rents for a time, the attendance was quite
large. After spending an hour or more in
social converse and ringing, the company
withdrew to a bountifully spread table in
another apartment. The table for abonn
dance and quality did credit to the ladies.
By voluntary contribution a sufficient sum
was raised to complete the cost of construct
ing a fence around the church and parson
age, which for neatness and design is high
ly commendable. This we ascertain was
the work of the ladies of the congregation.
We honor God by honoring His house ; by
adorning and making it neat and attractive
as our own homes. After spending the
evening profitably to all, we hope, the com
pany retired, feeling that our neighbors
were social beings like ourselves. Such en
' trtainments, aside from the purpose of
raising money for charitable ends, are profit
able to the promotion of a kindly and so
cial feeling among the good people of the
town, affording opportunity for improving
our mutual acquaintance, ana the promo
tion of a feeling that we are one in Him and
aerve a common master.
New York State "Vote. We give be
low the result of the Presidential election in
State of New York, taken from the official
returns : Garfield, 555,644; Hancock, 534,.
V511; Weaver, 12,373; Dow, 1,517. Gar
field's majority over Hancock, 21,033. Gar
field's majority over Hancock, Weaver and
Dow, 7,143. Garfield's total vote in the
United States was 4,439,719. Hancock's
4,436,060; Garfield's majority over Hancock
3,659. v -
..Social Dakce. There will be a social
dance at Hamilton's Opera House in this
city to-night, tinder the management of the
Oorvallis Social Club. It is the intention
that this shall be the first of a number of
social parties to be given by this clnb during
the coming winter, and we doubt not that
there is much of social enjoyment in store
for those who wiil attend.

city last week and made a raid on the Ga

ford's at very low prices.
Mrs. Thayer and Mrs. Eglin, of Portland,
who have been visiting friends in Corvallis
for several weeks, returned home to-day.
Dr. J. B. Lee is dangerously, ill at his res
idence in this city, but we trust that he ill
soon lie able to be on the street once more.
Mr. John Siinncler. of this city, is teach
ing the Philomath Brass Band. He visits
Philomath twice a week on that business.
W. P. Keadv returned from his ranch at
Alsea the latter part of last week, and
went on to Salem where his family still resides.
The Presbyterian Sabbath School has im
proved its music by the addition of a cornet
band in the skillful hands of Mr. John
Suangler:
Spring and wool mattrasses, pulu and

There will be glass ball shooting at the
grounds of the Corvallis shooting club on

Mr. H. L. Marston has opened a new
cash store at the Crawford building, corner
of Main and Adams street. We have n6t,
as yet, examined his stock, but learn that
he is going to sell at low prices.

Editor Gazette : To-day I closed the
first term of the District School here.
There has been an unusual amount of pu
pils in attendance and some were com
pelled to remain aw.ty for want of room.
There were seventy-two enrolled on the
school record. The school is taught in a
house twenty-four by thirty feet, very
poorly seated and very open, admitting the
cold wind freely. The school has been
ably assisted by Miss Mollie Bowen to the
great satisfaction of the patrons. T he fol
lowing persons were awarded prizes for pro
ficiency in spelling : Miss Bessie Bales,
"Buna' rooms;" Miss Annie Hall, "The
l"ps antT Di.wus of a Darkey;" Miss Car-
He Williams, "The First Builders;" Mas
ter John Murphy, " Little Boys' Stories.'
The quarter has been a very prosperous one.

Schooner Sold. The Gov. schooner
Fauntleroy, until lately used in coast sur
vey was, on Monday, sold at public auction
at Olympia, and purchased by Wm. Gallick
of Portland for 8600, who intends putting
the vessel into the seal trade of Cape Flat
tery. The schooner is well known on Puget
Sound, and was for some time under the
command of Captain J. S. Lawrence. The
Government purchased her in 1874, and
since that time,. until last Summer, the
Fauntleroy has been used by the Coast Surveyors.
Died. In thiscity, Dec. 4th, of diptheria,
Charles W. Brown, aged ten years, two
months and seven days. Willie, as his
playmates familiarly called him, was a
dutiful and pleasant child, and will be
missed not only by his own family, but his
many school mates who were also his friends.
Let us hope that he is now united with his
parents, who have already preceded him to
the spirit land.
Skating Carnival. W. T. Huffman,
manager of the skating rink, will conduct a
skating carnival at the Opera House to
morrow night. The rink has been well at
tended for the few weeks that it has been
running this winter, and we doubt not -the
carnival will be largely attended not only by
those who desire to take part in skating,
but by a large number of spectators.
Steamboats. The Willamette river is
once more up to boating stage, and the
music of the steamboat whistle is heard in
the land. The first boat of the season ar
rived at Cawthorne's wharf on last Monday,
since which time there has been a boat here
almost all the time.
KINGS VAULEY ITEMS.
December 13, 1880.
Editor Gazette : It has been a long
time since I have written anything for your
paper, so long, in fact, that I fear my right
hand has lost its cunning and the truth
may stick to my pen. There has been con
siderable improvements made in the valley
during the past summer. These I will not
notice in detail, except to say that the best
improvement is on our church here. A
new steeple takes the place of the one
blown off last winterl The church is also
surrounded by a neat and substantial fence,
and I think we now have one of the finest
country churches in the State. Onr new and
commodious school house is an honor to the
district and to Benton county.
Just previous to the last election we had
our full share of politics. Things are now
very quiet in that respect. I notice
several long faces among some of the
Democratic Brethren even yet. 1 see a great
big man going along the road now whose
lip almost drags the ground, and he is sev
en feet tall.
A.debating society was organized here on
last Friday night. It is called the Hespe
rian Literary Society. Look out for some
ovations in a few weeks. The officers are
James Chambers, president and Larkin
Price, secretary.
On Sunday last the people agreed on hav
ing a Christmas tree, and the propor com
mittees were appointed. Everybody in
vited and a general good time anticipated.
The Rev. Mr. Lynch, a Baptist minister, is
holding a protiacted meeting here at present.
The late cold snap damaged the fall
wheat, but for a few days the weather has
been warm, and wheat and grass are now
growing very likely though before this
letter reaches you, the ground will be again
covered with snow. 4
Wm. Hall has been encaged for the last
two months in burning an immense coal pis
for the Bialock's. From the time employed
and Jabnr expended and gas generated I
think "a thousand bushels of coal will be
drawn from the pit More or less.
Kings Valley will attend the teachers In
stitute. Our worthy county supermten-
lent should be heartily supported by every
teacher and lover of education in the county,
and these annual meetings should be re-'
garded as they really are, the very best sup
ports to our common schools. In a repttb-
ic like ours where every man is a sovereign,
the education, liberal, broad and moral,
of the masses, is absolutely essential to the
future stability of onr institutions, and con
sequently to the future happiness of the
.American peopi?. iis we prize our iiiier&iea
let us stand by the common school system.
Come to the Institute, teachers, Directors,
clerks and patrons of the schools, and pa
rents too, and evry body interested in the
cause of education.
