EVANGELICAL CHURCH Services regularly ev ery Sabbath morning; and evening, unless otherwise announced. Sunday School at 3 p. M. each Sabbath. Praver meeting every Thursday at 7 P. u. The public cordially invited Rrv. J. BOWBSBOX, Pastor. PHILOMATH. On last Monday business calling us to Philomath, we procured a conveyance and started for that quiet little town. Arriv ing there we drove to Mr. G. W. Kisor's and committed our " Roshiante " to his charge, started to " take in " the town. As a natural consequence the first place we vis ited was the Crucible office. This is a jour nal run in the fattens of the college at that place ; Mr. Al. Clayton is foreman, and has charge of the general business. Rev. Becker is the editor. The Crucible is in a yery flourishing condition, if all reports are true. The Philomath college, of which this journal is the exponent, is under the direct management of Prof. W. S. Walker, and through his earnest efforts is destined to become one of the leading institutions of learning in the State. The next place we called at was J. E. Henkle & Co.'s store. One would be sur prised to see the fine stock of goods, of all descriptions, that they have constantly on hand. Everything is ueat, and they sell as cheap as anybody. The postoffice is lo cated in their store. Their store would be a credit to any place. The next placs we come to is Allen & Harris' store. What we have said of Henkle & Co.'s store in regard to quality, variety and cheapness of (roods, will apply equally to this establishment. Everything is kept in the best of order, and there is nothing about that docs not betoken thrift and propriety. We were sorry to find that Mr. B. T. Harris hail been suffering from a severe throat affliction, but he had in a great measure recovered. Next we entered Mr. J. L. Akin's drug store. Mr. Akin is a new comer, having exchanged stores with N. A. Thompson. Mr. Aikin is lately from Monroe. Al though Mr. Thompson was obliging and at tended strictly to business, we feel sure that be lias a worthy successor. Mr. Akin evinced his business tact by giving ue a good order for job work, and subscribing for the Gazette. We wish him well in his new field. There axe several places of business that time did not permit us to vifit, but we hope to be able to do so at no distant day. But we must not fonjet to make mention of the place to get subsistence for the "inner man," Mr. G. W. Kisor's. Here for twenty-five cents you can net a meal fit for any body. He will also feed your horse for twenty-five centg. Philomath has increased materially iu proportions in the last two years, and a number of dwelling houses are now in cour.se of construction. She has a college that she may well le proud of, as well as a district school that is under excellent management. Taken all in all, Philomath is in a very prosperous condition. local notes Go to, Rosenthal's and see the pet ele phant. Fine Japan Teas at the Corvallis House hold Store. Mrs. M. D. Will it be believed that batter and chee-ie are imported into this town, which ought to be as good a dairy prodnce center as any. Attempt to Wheck a Train: Rail roads have been in operation in this county, says the Inland Empire, for upward of ten years, and up to Tuesday night of this week no attempt has ever been made to wreck a train. But on the night in ques tion occurred one of the most dastardly outrages ever attempted in any community. The eastward bound train was late, and by the rule of the road, was compelled to lie over at Cclilo until the down train from Blalock had arrived. The down train came tearing along as fast as the newly laid road would permit, when a loud crash revealed the fact that something had befallen the passenger coach which has scarcely been running a month. The engineer stopped the engine and the conductor ran the cars back a short distance, and here was an iron rail firmly driven into the ground slanting so as to rake the eastward hound train and ditch the engine. Had not the Cascades boat been belated the train would have been "snagged" and the engineer killed in all probability. The perpetrators of such outrages should be roasted over a slow fire, for hanging is too ood for them. fancy j Craw- : i aniro t Fii- A new cleroyman. Rev. B. E. Habers ham, 1 ite of Virginia, has taken charge of the parish of Corvallis for the winter cer tainly. He will reside here half of each month, spending the rest of his time wi'h his family in Portland. He will hold the services on the first threc Sundays in each month. We understand thnt Mr. Habers ham, who is a fine scholar, nave great satis faction to the congregation in last Sunday's services. The residents in Corvallis will be prepared to extend to Mr. Hibersham a kindly welcome on account of his two sons, both of whom' are so well known to us. Shocking Tragedy. On last Friday afternoon, at Weidler's mill, in Portland, occurred one of the most horrible acci dents we hive ever been ca'led upon to chronicle for some time. It seems that a young man named John Olaen was en gaged in running the lath machine con nected with the mill when the belt broke. Young Olsen climbed up on a pile of slab wood and was holding the belt while an other workman was mending it. In some unaccountable manner the boy was dra vn on the rapidly revolving shaft, and the first thing the workmen knew of the accident was pieces of flesh falling at their feet. The body was cut completely asunder, the head and trunk falling on one side, and the limbs on the other. One arm was held fast by the belt and crushed to a jelly. The body was gathered together asquickly as possible, and Coroner Garnold sent for. No blame can be attached to any person con nected with the mill. Olsen had two brothers at work in another part of the mill at the time. The Wages op Sin. Last Monday morning Frank S. Pearce, indicted for rob bing his room mate at the Richmond House, Portland, and to which charge he entered a plea of guilty, was sentenced to the penitentiary for one year. Before sentenced was passed, Mr. W. S. Bcelie, his attorney, asked that the Court in pronounc ing judgment would be as lenient as it could in this case and take into considera tion the fact of the prisoner's former good standing and this being his first offense. District Attorney Caples also spoke in fayor of young Pearce, asking the clemency of the Court to be -extended to the prisoner. The request made by the attorneys was not made in vain, and young Pearce is lucky in getting off for one year, and . the lesson taught him should be sufficient to keep him from temptation in the future. An effort will be made, we understand, to have him pardoned. Court in Polk. The Polk county cir cuit court will commence in Dallas next Monday. Judge Watson will hold court for three days, after which he will adjourn until the January term. Wanted To sell 200,000 feet of inch lum ber, in lots of 3.000 feet, at $10.50 per thou sand, by Max Friendiy at the Corvallis Saw Mill. TEe children of the M. E. Sunday school may expect a treat on Christmas. The per sons that are working it up understand their business. We hear that Portland has been enquir ing as to the quantity of wheat stored here, and was told that 9,000 tons were still awaiting transportation. Mr. J. D. Irvine, of Brownsville, brother of the L'entlemanly and efficient agent of the W. O. R. R. Co. at this place, is visiting j in the city this week. The recent change in the weather has j brought to the country immense flocks of wild geese and dacks, and our sporting-men j are correspondingly happy. Go to L. G. Kline ft Cos for your rubber boots and shoes, gossamers, ulsters, or any thing you want. They are offering goods at prices.to suit everybody. lm We understand that a new physician is about to locate here, bearing the time-honored name of Dr. Syntax. We have not vet heard to what class of the healing art he belongs. Corvallis supports two " singing schools." one at the Evangelical Church on Tuesday ', ... - nnrla, thu ,n -i n .1 . r m n r. fif Ucof vatee, anil one at the M. ivuurcu, taught by Rev. Mr. Starr on Saturday. Little words ;ire the sweetest to hear, lit tle charities rjy furthest and stay longest on the wing, little Hakes are the stillest, little heart the fullest, little farms the bast tilted, little songs the most sung, and little women we pass. Look at our esteemed editor's new hat. Shining crimpled at the top the last arid highest thing in art. And it all comes of Garfield. Pity we can't have an election every month; we midit get him new gar ments throughout. (Mem. by the printers' devil. ) Farmers complain very much of the un usual dry weather at this season of the year, until within the Lt3t three days there has not becu enough of rain to start the wheat to growing, and the Willamette river is at a very low stace of water, thus delaying the shipment of the wheat stored on the river. Two of our English boys started in the rain- for the Bay on Wednesday to wage war on creese and ducks. Ent they returned in a few hours sadder if riot wiser men. We understand the loss of their cartridges on the road was the immediate cause of their return. Poor boys, such a loni? ride in the rain. Mud agiin ! Two days rain has con verted our main street into a dirty pond, crossed at intervals by plank bridges. Every wagon that draws up to the side wa'k throws up showers on the passers by. Pity that a real solid improvement was not carried out during the six months f sun shine we have been favored with. Is it too late. The skating rink at the City Hall is in full blast on each Saturday evening. Many a young beginner finds his level all too quickly for his dignity. We heard one of our portly citizens announce his intention of putting on four pairs next Saturday, one on feet, one on hands, one oh knees, nnd one on the back of his head. He thinks then he can skate all the time without losing time in picking himself up. Rev. W. T. Charman, presiding elder of the M. E. Church for the district, returned from an extended trip through Southern Oregon Lift Tuesday. He reports every thing looking up in that part of the State. During his absence he visited Ashlnnd col lege, a Normal school, which, under the guidance cf Prof. L. L. Rogers, assisted by Ladru Royal, formerly of this place, is rap idly taking rank among the leading institu tions of learning in our State. Corvallis is improving, not only are new stores springing np and residences being built, with all the advantages modern civilization demands, but our churches are being decently fenced in and their yards are no longer allowed to lie the common resort of all the cows and horses in the neighbor hood, and when we see our ministers them selves taking the paint brush in hand in the cause of decency and order, we think there is hope that the love of neatness may take a still wider range, A fair young correspondent has favored us with some original lines on the scenes of her childhood. We are unable to pub lish what we suppose is a first effort, but we would suggest to the author to cdntinne her labors, in the belief that Linn connty may yet produce a poetess. In the present case some of the lines halt a little m the an ! thor's wish to bring in the hay-mow, the maple tree, the gum weed, and the lessa mine, without due regard to the number of syllables these words, so full ot poetry, con tain. It is a fact well established by unques tionable testimony that Hall's Hair Renewer renews, cleanses, brightens, invigorates and restores to its origitisrV color and lustre, faded gray or discolored hair, cheaply, quickly and surely. The poorest people prefer to buy it and use it, rather than to proclaim in a manner more forcible than words can delineate, through blanched locks or grizzy beard, that they are aged and passing to decay. A very short trial will convince the most skeptical that it does eradicate the ea'p diseases which rob the hair of its color and life. Fort Scott (Kan. ) Daily Monitor. The Scientific American.
