In accordance with a custom that has
prevailed for a long period of time, I, W.
V. Thayer. Governor of the State of
Oregon, do hereby appoint Thursday, the
25th day of November, 1880, as a day of
thanksgiving.

A Self-Confessed Thief. Last Tuesday
bii old gentleman named George H. Kinser,
who recentle arrived from the east, was
robbed of $195.00 in gold coin. Siuce his
arrival here Kinser had been stopping at
the Richmond House. On Monday night
Kinser occupied a room at the hotel jointly
with a yonng man named Fr.ink G. Pearce,
who was in the employ at the westside
railroad company in the capacity of mail
weigher. From all the circumstances sus
picion was at once directed to Pearce. Chief
Laopeus was notified by the theft by the
proprietor of the Richmond House, and that
officer began to track up the matter. The
case was turned over to Detective Joe Day.
Whfln Pearce came down from Corvallis on
Wednesday he was interviewed by Mr.
Fellows, the proprietor of the hotel. He
betrayed great nervousness when spoken to
about the theft, ond denied all knowledge of
the matter. Although convinced of Pcarce's
guilt, Chief Lappeus did not arrest hiin, for
the reason that there was no tangible evi
dence against him. There were several cir
cumstances against Pearce, but still there
was nothing which would warrant his ar
rest. While the officers were waiting and
watching for some clue Mr. Fellows received
a dispatch on Friday from D. H. Thacker
of Corvallis, a friend of nis, who by some
means learned of the robbery. The tele
gram was to the cfiect that Pearce had de
posited with him the sum of $190. On re
ceiving this dispatch, Mr. Fellows notified
Chief Lappeu8jf the fact. A warrant was
issued at once and given to Detective Day,
who. on the arrival of the westeidc train
Friday afternoon, arrested Pearce and con
veyed him to the city jail where he is at
present. On being arrested Pearce confessed
his guilt, aud gave all the circumstances of
the crime. He seems very penitent and
states that it is his first wrong act. Ore

Frank G. Pearce, the young man referred
to in the above extract, had been boarding
at the New England House in this city from
October 20th untill the time of his arrest,
and occupied a room jointly with Mr. F. P.
Lane and D. H. Thacker. The evening
prior to his arrest Pierce related to Mr.
Thacker the particulars concerning the theft
which had been committed in the Richmond
House, and stated: that he was strongly sua
picioned as being the guilty party. In the
course of hie conversation he stated that on
Tuesday he received $190 from his father,
who resided in the East, and as the money
was of about the same denomination as that
stolen in Portland, he thought it would look
rather suspicious to have it found on his
person, and told Mr. Thacker that if he
would take care of it for him for eight or
ten days, his remuneration therefor would
be $20. Thereupon Mr. Thacker took the
$190 and promised to comply with Pearce's
request, and the next day telegraphed to the
proprietor of the Richmond House in Port
land the facts in the case, with the result as
above stated. Pearce is a man of about
twenty-seven years of age, of prepossessing
appearance, a good conversationalist, and
very agreeable in company. He now lies in
the Portland jail awaiting sentence.
Musical Treat. On last Wednesday
evening our citizens had the pleasure of
listening to Messrs. Chas. Hines and J. K.
St. Lawrence, the blind musicians. It was
undoubtedly the best entertainment for the
money that we ever attended. Mr. Hines
handles the violin in a manner that is truly
wonderful. His selections were good, and
his imitations perfect. Mr. St. Lawrence
brought down the house with comic songs
aud recitations. Taken all in all, it was as
good an entertainment of the kind as has
been our our fortune to listen to for some
time. They go from hore to Oregon City,
and thence up the east side to. Roseburg.
The Bonanza Mines. It is an open
secret that unless new discoveries of ore are
made in these mines that their working will
have to be abandoned, and then the question
arises whether more money has been taken
from them than has been put in. But no
such question of comparative benefits can
arise in connection with the Oregon Kidney

Thanksgiving Services. -The ministers
of the various Protestant churches of the
city met, pursuant to a call, in the College,
at 4 o'clock P. M., Tuesday, Nov. 16th. The

As Others See Us. The New York
World evolved the following opinions from
the London Times : "The Republicans in
America have nominated the third-term
candidate, Garfield. He has already held
the Presidency for two years, and his elec
tion for a third term will probably result in
the crowning of his eldest son, U. S. Grant
Garfield, as Emperor of America. The
Democrats, led by a wild Irishman, named
Hancock, appear to have nominated one
Dennis Kearney, a millionaire of San Fran
cisco, and an Irishman by birth, who lives
in Paris, where he has a magnificent villa,
and who is the owner of gold mines of in
calculable value in Nevada, in the state of
Tennessee, and works 50,000 Chinese, all of
whose queues he has cut off. "
Crystal Wedding. On last Friday ev
ening the many friends of Mr. and Mrs.
S. L. Shedd tendered them a surprise party,
in honor of their crystal wedding. The
house was filled to overflowing, and many
handsome presents were made. It was a
surprise to Mr. and Mrs. Shedd, they know
ing nothing of the intendod visit After
spending some time in social conversation
and enjoyment, the visitors retired, wish
ing the happy couple many returns of the
anniversary.
